Here we go again with another series thread. The Mets continue their 8-game road trip, shifting to Pittsburgh today. The Mets split their previous series in Washington, D.C. (2-2) & are a game below .500 now at 42-43. The Bucs are also below .500 at 41-45. Both clubs are within striking distance of the final wildcard spot in the N.L. and are looking to bounce back from recent setbacks in this four-game set. Enjoy 😊!

I'd love to go there. Amazing view and the park sounds like a lot of fun. The Pirates used to be such an important franchise. It'd be nice for baseball if they were again. Skenes is a frikkin stud already.
Amazing that they could build a ballpark without obstructed view seats.

It looks like the Mets will go to a 6-man rotation when Senga comes back in about a month based on some rumors I've read.

Factor in Sean Reid-Foley into this equation somewhere after the All-Star Break too. Ottavino might be the odd man out when he's back. The only thing saving Diekman now is that he's the only lefty in the BP. The Mets need to do something about him ASAP.

very good. reasonably bold choice to keep him over nido too since nido is a good glove.
Assume he'll be in the rotation next year, right?
The dude can’t throw strikes. And that’s with two gifts from the ump that weren’t even close.
just 2 more on the road then 6 at home vs WASH/COL.
gotta get over .500 and then not look back. getting close to Senga time too.

He's a keeper. He's a starter, but the Mets are desperate now and need him as a longman in the pen. He should be in the rotation next season full-time, if not here, than in a trade with another club.
lol, Diaz returning does not “straighten out” our BP in the least bit.

I wondered what the actual #'s are in terms of where the bull-pen stands compared to other teams?
Easy to say it's a mess, but I know I tend to react when things go badly, and hardly notice the good days...like yesterday when the BP put up 4 plus scoreless innings....
So, I just checked and the Mets are 16th in the majors (30 teams) for ERA (4.00), 17th in # of saves, 21st in WHIP...they are lower in # of walks 5th from the bottom, or highest amount.
So, the #'s suggest the Mets are a bit below average in terms of their bull pen.
what has occurred since then is directly responsible for why the Bullpen is all of sudden "a mess"
Raley/Smith out for the season, Lopez/Tonkin DFA, SRF on rehab, Diaz struggles.
That leaves Diekman and Garret, who have been totally overexposed and overworked. I see people slamming the shit out of them daily, its not like they have suddenly forgot how to pitch.
Honestly, I really get sick of people always trying to find someone to blame, where there is not one person who should take the blame. There should be no blame, its just the cause and effect in baseball.
That said, Diaz looked good last night, bats are still hot. An for the record I'm not 100% sold still on if we should not sell at the deadline. Phillies are a powerhouse and the return for sellers will be franchise altering.
Rant over.
I'd like to see a comparison of the number of different pitchers in each team's BP. I don't know if that stat is readily available....but it might provide some additional context.

I just did a quick search for MLB bullpen rankings and the site I referred to didn't have the more sophisticated stats, including one I was hoping to find...blown saves.
The thought that the BP has gotten worse, especially after Raley, SRF and Smith (who gets killed here) were injured, is no doubt accurate.
But, I bet they are still middle of the pack overall....
The whole staff has a better era w Alvarez

Did Gary just say that Manaea's ERA with Alvarez is 1.56 and his ERA with other catchers being 3.56? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

between alvarez' and vientos' defense i dont think im ever trusting another defensive scouting report.
conforto and alonso going from "dh-only" to generally fine was one thing, hard to imagine getting more premium positions so wrong.
Someone from MMO gave me these numbers:
Alvarez: 1.56
Narvaez: 5.60
Nido: 3.62
Torrens: 14.73

Everyone is welcome to feel however they want to feel - but we dont have to agree with each other. I’m not going to get crazy and praiseworthy because our Bullpen was good for the first quarter of the season. I remember there being a lot of concern about the bullpen going into the season - so a lucky start to the season doesn’t change any of that.
Looking at it as “cause and effect baseball” is oversimplifying it because you don’t like what the other side says. Yes, we’ve had some injuries. But - we’ve also created our own mess by bringing in the RPs that we did. Dieckman, Ottavino, Tonkin (twice), Festa, Jay, Hartwig, Smith, Walker, Rodriguez, Sulser, Adcock. All bad. Even Garrett - as good as he was early on - is crashing down to earth (even if some want to point to workload - though he’s never been a quality pitcher in his career). That’s not a small number of options to choose from - and we’ve given a number of games away because of that.
Dieckman? Sure he had a good year last year but have you seen the years prior that? What did expect signing a mediocre 37 year old RP come off a career year. No, I don’t think his struggles are the result of being overworked. Garrett? Same thing, just not as old. They haven’t been “exposed”. They just aren’t good pitchers.
So, yes - if a struggling RP comes in and walks the park to lose the game or give up a lead, I’m not going to say “aw shucks, get him next time champ”. Part of being a fan. Nor am I’m going to go easy on Stearns for the BP he built. Or why he would call Festa up when there may have been other options to use. Or why some of these guys are in the system anyway. M
Sorry it bothers you.
is diaz the elite diaz he's paid to be who just had some struggles off a major injury? or not? if not it's nobody's fault and only so much that can be done. there arent any edwin diaz' out there to add easily.
is garrett regressing just bc he was overworked or is there something deeper?
is nunez for real?
are otto/diekman totally cooked?
remember there was a lot of impatient clamoring for tonkin to get DFA'd (myself included) and some stronger labeling him as a bad signing. that argument hits a little different with him carrying a 2.25 era in the bronx over 31 innings?
they obviously need to get these assessments right and add from the outside to replace both what they've lose to injury and whatever they judge to not be part of the solution going forward. but getting those assessments right probably requires some level patience.
oh come on ottovino has been cooked all year. we have talked about DFA'ing him for weeks.
Nunez has been stepping up and he stepped up today.
They went with a very rested Diaz in a winnable situation and he didnt get it done. sometimes it is that simple.
I think Mendy gives Diaz a batter here and goes batter by batter hoping to get a confidence injection.
He's come alive ever since they put him at leadoff. Glad to see him come back from his rough start. HUGE hit by him.
I agree. I'm not confident in Ottovino, but Diaz doesn't seem to have it tonight.
Quote:
He doesn't have it today. Not a fan of Otto either, but I think he gives us a better chance to win this game. Make no mistake about it, this IS a BIG game.

I think you were right. Smart way to approach it by our manager. Props to him. Covered all bases, no pun intended!
Same here Ira. Happy to see Edwin make me eat my words. BIG win!
agreed and would add mendoza in the mix. stearns stayed the course, and has so far proven pretty smart in hiring mendoza who has been aligned with stearns even through some real low lows.
diaz is the most important player on this roster. he was probably the single most important player in 2022 also. if they get that version of him they can compete, especially if senga comes back strong.
they need to dump gamel or DJ and give acuna a shot. eventually iglesias will fade, he is 34 and likely better as a bench player. he has made some big plays defensively but it hasnt graded well. the plays hes made are showing the kind of impact athleticism/defense at 2b can have. this roster could also use a fast guy for late game situations.

Here's a Mock Draft from MLB.com:
Latest mock: Just over a week out, who will go No. 1 in '24 Draft? | July 4th, 2024 | Jonathan Mayo @JonathanMayo
Here's who the author of the article linked above has the Mets taking at #19 overall:
This has long been another college hitter landing spot, and they still could consider hitters like Mississippi State’s Dakota Jordan or Kansas State’s Kaelen Culpepper, but there’s more buzz that things might be leaning toward high school hitting, with Caldwell joining prep shortstops like Theo Gillen or Kellon Lindsey atop their board. Caldwell might only be 5-foot-9, but the Mets haven’t shied away from undersized prep bats in the past (see Williams, Jett).
The 2024 MLB Draft will take place on July 14-16 in conjunction with the MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field. The opening rounds will begin at 7 p.m. ET on July 14, with the remainder of the draft beginning at 12 p.m. ET on July 15 and July 16.

kind of dont care too much, i dont mind the players getting extra rest and hopefully it gets them even more fired up for the 2nd half.

They could have gone with Gore or Irvin as well but all close.
Alonso over Christian Walker is a joke though.
I wonder if Mets let Alonso go and sign Walker as his replacement even though he's older. Insane defensive 1B and his bat has really come along the last 2 years. He should be cheaper as well.

Mendoza doesn't make "pitch count" decisions. Those sorts of decisions come from Hefner and Jagers.
A few complete bullpen meltdowns per week and the lineup cooling off and the Mets are looking like the .500 club that their record says.

Gary made it seem like it was a pitch count thing but not sure if he knew that or was insinuating.
Just a general comment here and not directed at you but a terrible spot to give Orze his first game action. Mendoza is boxed in with the pen though. Only 1 outing but I'm not too impressed with Orze.
Link - ( New Window )
P.S. The more I see from Houser--even in a long relief role--the less I wanna see him at all. He's 31 and a free agent after the year (see contract details HERE). He's out of options too if I recall. I'd make some changes to the pen sooner rather than later. I'd move Megill to Houser's role very soon & bring up lefty Gage for Orze after today. Go after FA-to-be lefty reliever Tanner Scott from the Fish too soon.
Exit Velocity
65.8mph
I'm not defending Orze, or even suggesting he's a major piece of the future but I don't think that was a great spot for his debut and I think he had some bad "luck" go against him.
For sure. I am WFH today so was watching game. I just wan't impressed with his CU today and his numbers at AAA leave a lot to be desired. A low 90's FB with a CU in the mid 80's won't get it done in a MLB pen IMO. He was hitting 95 today but that doesn't seem like the norm. Hope I am wrong.
" Orze, at Syracuse, has a plus-plus changeup and struggles to throw strikes."
" Eric Orze sits 95 mph, has a plus changeup, and struggles to throw strikes. "
Mike Puma
@NYPost_Mets
Carlos Mendoza said it was decided before the game to keep Christian Scott to 75 pitches because he threw 99 last time and was on four days’ rest.
That's what I get for listening to the booth then. They said 95 was high for him he usually sits low 90s.
+1
Quote:
isn't particularly unusual for Orze. When I've watched him in Syracuse he's 93-96 usually. Can't say I recall him throwing much harder than that but usually 93-95 with a plus CU with heavy drop to it.
That's what I get for listening to the booth then. They said 95 was high for him he usually sits low 90s.
I was curious what the statcast readings were so I looked... his last 5 outings coming into today were June 22nd, June 27th June 29th, July 2nd and July 5th. July 5th he threw 1 single FB (13 total pitches) (94.2) (not much help), July 2nd he thew 3 FB's (94, 94, 93.2) and June 29th 5 FB's ranging from 93.3 to 93.8, June 27th 2 FB's 94.2 and 94.3 and June 22nd 3 FB's 93.4, 93.6 and 95.2 and today FB ranged from 93.8-94.6, so yeah, he's not a huge velocity guy but 93-95 is his norm.
John Harper
@NYNJHarper
Mendoza said it was an organizational decision to limit to Scott to 75 pitches, had to pull him even though he was "in complete control." I get wanting to protect Scott but as so many pitchers have told me, non-stress innings make those pre-determined decisions too arbitrary.
and even with those 3 pitching it was hard to get those last 2 wins.

They walk a ton of batters. This is their biggest problem. This would actually be a pretty decent bullpen if it weren’t for the walks. The walks are just absolute killers for relief pitchers. They do strike out a ton of batters though.

yeah and this was a flaw of construction. they saved money by signing guys like diekman and otto - who are good when they dont walk people but too often that's not the case. otto is actually slightly under his career rate (3 vs 4 per 9) but diekman is way over his (7 vs 5 per 9).
the younger/less proven guys in high leverage walking people is to be expected - thats why they should have signed at least 1 more guy with experience in high leverage.
and even with those 3 pitching it was hard to get those last 2 wins.

this was my point yesterday.
in may they were the worst but in april they were one of the best. that averages out to their average but it wasnt by being steadily mediocre. it has been jekyl/hyde.
I think the Mets have had some “bad luck” in that many of the bullpens worst outings were in tied games or games where Mets had small leads. Seems like we saw a lot of games earlier in the year where the bullpen did something like 5ip 1ER and the Mets lose 7-3
