When Death Wish came out in 74' crime was just outrageous in NYC. The midtown theater I was erupted in cheers like nothing I ever saw before or since as Bronson gunned down those thugs.

Because it felt and looked real. The first death wish felt authentic. And Bronson was and always will be a legit bad ass.

The joker was brilliant but different. Same apples to taxi driver, (not listed but should be) more allegory….
No contest...

Grew up dirt poor in the coal hills of western PA. So poor he had to wear his sister's clothes to school at time for lack of his own. Got two options when life throws you shit like that. Also the source of one of the best Simpsons gags ever.

"This. Ain't. Ova."

I went right to Daniel Penny, but certainly thought of Goetz too.
Speaking of Goetz, I should have added Miranda to the list

In the first season of Law and Order, Cynthia Nixon played a character that popped two thugs on the subway.

I recall my dad telling us people were standing and giving standing Os when he saw it. Odd asshat aside my dad worked w Bernie Goetz as he was a PSEG in NI and he was a contract engineer.

Lastly Bruce Willis' version of Desth Wish was bad but gotta go w Bronson IMO
And to add to Bernie story for those they don't know

He was nerdy and had been mugged at least once from what my dad told me. So he went and got a gun. Tense times.
