Options at #39 had the Giants Signed Christian Wilkins

nyjuggernaut2 : 7/10/2024 5:55 pm
I know this is hypotheically speaking, but with the interest the Giants front office expressed in Wilkins during the first couple Hard Knocks episodes, I went back and looked at players that would've been available at #39 had the Giants signed Wilkins instead of trading for Burns.

Cooper DeJean
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kamari Lassiter
Max Melton
Braden Fiske
Edgerin Cooper
Jonathan Brooks
Jackson Powers-Johnson

Those were the players selected between 39 and the Giants next pick at 47. Out of those, I would assume the pick would'be been CB since CB, pass-rusher, and WR were the three key areas of need Joe Schoen mentioned. Knowing what we know now, I think I would've preferred Wilkins and DeJean/McKinstry/Melton over Brian Burns and trading the pick.
to add to OP
knowledgetimmons : 7/10/2024 6:13 pm : link
Christian Wilkins would've cost approximately 1.3 million less than Brian Burns annually, and about 5-6 million overall guaranteed.

Analytically, the 46th pick costs 8+ million guaranteed over length. So Brian Burns effective cost is actually less than Christian Wilkins.

Burns is 2.5 years younger than Wilkins.

To answer OP, they would've picked a DL. In either case I'm mostly convinced they made the most effective move.
39th, not 46th my bad

Maason Smith @ 39 and Christian Wilkins would've been an ok substitute in my view.
Not me

I think Burns will have a much bigger impact than Wilkins.
Burns
Toth029 : 7/10/2024 6:25 pm : link
Has a much bigger ceiling and has been more consistent as a pro. Wilkins didn't pass 34 pressures in a single year until this past year. I'm sure he and Dex would have have incredible together, but finding a quality top 10ish edge rusher is extremely difficult. They have one in Burns.
I Like The Burns Addition Better

even with the draft pick compensation.

Dex is already disruptive up the middle. Without pressure from both edges, you can potentially roll out away from up the middle and one edge pressure.

With pressure from the middle and BOTH edges (assuming that is what we get), forcing hurried, less accurate throws, interceptions and getting sacks should be significantly more frequent than with "double pressure" up the middle and one edge.

It seems everyone is automatically assuming
John In CO : 7/10/2024 6:52 pm : link
that Christian Wilkins would have a) signed with the Giants, and b) signed for the same amount that he signed for in LV.
I think its realistic to think he may have signed here, but not for the same $$$. Not even close probably. People never consider the state tax vs no state tax issue when judging what players ultimately sign for, and they really should. Its not an even playing field at all.

Plays with his best friend here… could take less for that alone…

And while I still wish they had found a way to keep Tomlinson back in the day w Dex there isnt any GM who doesn’t think ER > DT in General. And please don’t bring up outliers. Burns has had stop level career, younger as well.
Wilkins

You always go for the pass rusher. Wilkins is a very good player but having the potential of having bookend pass rushers is the way to go
Would Wilkins and Dex have been more effective than Leonard Williams
Ivan15 : 7/10/2024 7:52 pm : link
And Dex? Wilkins is younger but there is no assurance that he can play better than Williams.

Wilkins averaged 3 sacks per year for his prior four seasons before 2023. And then he popped for 9 in 2024. Is that a sign of bigger things to come as a pass rusher or an outlier? I don't know, but Burns has proven to be a player who is much better at getting the QB to the ground while he still has the ball.

DT will be high on the list in next year draft
rasbutant : 7/10/2024 8:56 pm : link
High pick too.

Leaving off the QB discussion.

I think it’s clear the biggest needs for the high picks are CB and DT

Still need bodies for the oline but they probably come 3rd round and beyond. Unless Neal is a total flop of course.
We need a true ALPHA at Edge

+1. Damn straight.
While Wilkins is a good pass rusher, Burns is a better one. As was

pointed out, you don't just look at the players last season.
Burns without a doubt
Mike in NY : 7/11/2024 7:49 am : link
Without that alpha edge player who do you have opposite Thibs? Do you really want the oft-injured Ojulari in that spot? On Miami, Wilkins was at best the 3rd or 4th guy among the pass rushers after Chubb and Phillips and comparable to Seiler. With the Giants he would need to be more and the PFF numbers don’t indicate that he can rise to that role.
Would rather have signed Bryce Huff and Dorance Armstrong
Jim in Forest Hills : 7/11/2024 11:08 am : link
to rotate KT, BH, DA, AO and come in waves. Huffs sack rate was insane. Armstrong could kick inside on 3rd and long.

Then pickup a Cooper Dejean in rd 2. I think the team is better.

No mention of Huff in HKs yet.
There's a reason the Giants traded away Leonard Williams
BigBlue7 : 7/11/2024 11:18 am : link
and it was lack of pass rush impact.

That is why they chose Burns over Wilkins as well

Bryce Huff is nowhere near as good against the run as Burns is. He was asked to come in in obvious passing situations and get after the QB. On the other hand, DA was someone I would not have minded in Free Agency.
that's a ton of money

tied up on the interior of the DLine. Azeez will be gone next year - so we would be left with a one-sided pass rush
