Biggest takeaway from Schoen and Daboll’s pre-camp presser: Jermaine Eluemunor will be at RT with Evan Neal starting camp on PUP. Even with Schoen saying Neal isn’t “far off” from practicing, they’re making this drastic change to their O-line plan. I can’t see any way Neal gets the starting job back. Harsh for Neal, but best thing for the Giants’ line IMO.
Also, Daboll said Daniel Jones will be a full participant from the start of camp and will take all of the first-team reps.
We saw on Hard Knocks that drafting Joe Alt was not a consideration, presumably because we had Evan Neal. Now Duggan is saying Neal probably lost his job.

Yeah but I was under the impression he was brought in to play guard. Now I guess he's being kicked out to tackle with Ezeudu starting.

He was signed because he could play Guard or Tackle but his best position is probably at tackle..
Stinnie is playing guard
elumeanor at RT is the right decision - as would be signing van roten
or another experienced RG to kick Runyan to LG. Anything they get from Neal should be considered a bonus. he's 2 years running been outplayed by tyree phillips off the waiver wire.
if they loved Alt they should have considered him but Neal (and to lesser extents JMS/Ezeudu) show the risk of relying on rookies to "fix" things no matter how safe they seem.
part of the draft is projecting your own strengths/weaknesses as an org to develop talent. signing veteran OL was the right way to go. this org has not yet proven it can develop OL and that's a risk that needs to be accounted for in their decision making.
The Giants thought process in this year’s offseason was that they struggle to properly scout OL. So They signed a bunch of OL in FA with actual competent starting experience at almost every OL position.
The draft plan, if trading up for Maye wasn’t going to work, was juggling the blue chip and red chip offensive skill players. I think this was less “weapons for Daniel” and more “we think we can scout these players better.”

Wasn't it Duggan who said pre-draft the Giants had a deal in place with NE? Seems that way cause he'd been beating that drum loudly since the draft. I think he's shifting his target to Neal cause of ass burn from last night.
Neal going to PUP gives Duggan a great shot at being right this time.

Yes, I've heard Money.

that was basically how he was used (effectively) last year - on pass plays in space and occassionally rushing. it sounds like this year will be similar.

First highlight of #Giants camp: Long touchdown down left sideline from Drew Lock to a tightly-covered Lawrence Cager. DB was all over him. Still not sure how he pulled that in.
Could see Cager having a bigger role than people expect as reviving TE.
First two sets of team drills are done for the #Giants.
Daniel Jones went 2 of 5.
Both completions short in the flat (Robinson, Gray). Incompletions were a deflection and two errant passes.

The Chargers did too when they drafted Alt, who will be their right tackle.
The Chargers just did the exact same thing the Giants did a few years before. We had Thomas and then drafted Neal. So you can't kill them for not doing this. Sure right now Neal looks like a big disappointment, and possibly was the wrong player selected, but that happens. Alt could be a psuedo-bust too, we will see. But your argument that the Giants don't do these things, aor haven't, is false.

Interesting note from Day 1 of Giants training camp: Isaiah Simmons was working with the cornerbacks. The plan is to use him as a nickelback. He is fully on board with the idea. It aligns with his desires.
Simmons noted he had his most productive year in Arizona in a similar role under Vance Joseph. He had 99 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions and 4.0 sacks.
Simmons thinks this will be a similar role in Shane Bowen's defense with the Giants.

Big concern, obviously, is health of Jermaine Eluemunor
Jones rounding into regular season check-down form
Right, all that time he had in the pocket and all those gifted WRs just going to waste.
Smart QBs check it down when there’s nothing else to do.
And mediocre QBs check down when they don't have the confidence or ability to throw into tight windows
And dopey fans harp on every play during the 1st day of camp to further their dopey narratives.

Jones is THE reason why every national preseason primer pegs the NYG to be a bottom 5 team in 2024.
but this is f#cking brutal to lose Eluemunor for any stretch of time already.
Reminds me of Pugh, Richburg and Flowers beating their chest about having to stay on the field and by day 3 all of them were sitting out.
Part of the reason this OL has been so bad for so long is they seem to have a new starting 5 every week. And now, after less than a practice, they'll have to reshuffle the starting 5 again.

The other thing is that Matt Nelso, the other OT they brought in, has also been out and I'm not clear on what his status is at this point. There's always concentrated injuries on the Oline, and always impactful.

Sometimes you cannot see the forest because of the trees. Alt was not a consideration because they wanted either Maye or one of the WRs.
They got Eleumunor in FA as back up to Neal. But it was clear as a bell that they wanted to go QB(one of the top 3) or Nabers or Harrison - and even Bowers.

#Giants 1st training camp practice takeaways:
- Short pass game served as an extension of the run game. Draft Wan'Dale Robinson in PPR fantasy leagues. That might continue with this RB depth chart.
- Daniel Jones: 8-of-13 passing, no completions more than 5-ish yards. Under duress often, but moved well in first 11-on-11s since tearing his ACL.
- Malik Nabers had a drop on a well-placed throw. Don't expect many of those. He took an end-around and lined up in the backfield to run a route once.
- Is #Giants100 OL just cursed? 3 days ago, I would've listed Evan Neal and Jermaine Eluemunor as starters. Now both are injured (no word yet on Eluemunor's severity) and LG Aaron Stinnie & RT Josh Ezeudu are starters.
- I applaud Schoen and Daboll for their (pre-injury) decision to move Eluemunor from LG to RT. It was clear that Neal will have to earn the job when he returns from PUP instead of getting handed snaps based on draft status. That said, Eluemunor's injury might change things.
- Dane Belton, not rookie second-round pick Tyler Nubin, was the starting safety next to Jason Pinnock.
- Who are CB Cor'Dale Flott's biggest challengers to start on the outside? Tre Hawkins and Darnay Holmes were the second-teamers.
- Drew Lock threw a TD pass to Lawrence Cager (sweet catch) and a pick to Boogie Basham on a tipped pass by Jordan Phillips.
but I've been consistent in saying Flott is not starting material as a boundary CB vs good, quick receivers, part of it is his movement (long and slowish to change direction) and part is his tackling, unless he has improved that big time

Have you considered that the Giants have admitted to themselves that Neal was a miss, admitted to themselves that they don’t do a good job with scouting college OL, therefore they decided to correct that mistake through FA, and use a #6 pick on a position they consider easier to scout?

Certainly doesn't seem like Schoen views Abrams as dead weight, or an undermining threat. I think he got lucky in inheriting him, if he wanted him gone he would be.
Have you considered that the Giants have admitted to themselves that Neal was a miss, admitted to themselves that they don’t do a good job with scouting college OL
While it's certainly possible they've "admitted" that Neal was a miss, they surely haven't "admitted to themselves that they don't do a good job with scouting college OL." Teams make mistakes all the time when it comes to scouting college prospects, it's an inexact science. The Cowboys had Neal as their #2 prospect overall and while there may have NFL scouting departments that didn't see Neal as a top ten pick, I doubt there was a single team that didn't give him a 1st round grade. Shit happens.
Quote:
...therefore they decided to correct that mistake through FA, and use a #6 pick on a position they consider easier to scout?
No. First of all, WR is every bit as tough to scout as OL, maybe even tougher. The first round is littered with WRs that busted. Second of all, the Giants went into the draft with a roster long on young OL still on their learning curve and what it needed was immediate veteran help, not more youth to develop.
RE: a few dump offs in a fucking walk through practice
The intensity is up above last years camp. Maybe it pays off, or it doesn't, but being lax doesn't help.
Josh Ezeudu had a problematic day. I don't begrudge Daboll or Schoen for wanting to use his versatility, but the man is a much better guard than tackle. He's a fourth OT at best at this point. If Neal and Eluemenor aren't in at RT, I feel like Matt Nelson is a better alternative. More experience there, for one.
Biggest play should have been a post play to Nabers and he dropped it.
I do like Bowen trying different alternatives at DL alongside Dex. Phillips may ultimately win the job but Anderson and Chatman in there early is a pleasant surprise. Try them early and see what they have.

part of the draft is projecting your own strengths/weaknesses as an org to develop talent. signing veteran OL was the right way to go. this org has not yet proven it can develop OL and that's a risk that needs to be accounted for in their decision making.

Not exactly a roaring endorsement.

The Chargers did too when they drafted Alt, who will be their right tackle.
The draft plan, if trading up for Maye wasn’t going to work, was juggling the blue chip and red chip offensive skill players. I think this was less “weapons for Daniel” and more “we think we can scout these players better.”

We saw on Hard Knocks that drafting Joe Alt was not a consideration, presumably because we had Evan Neal. Now Duggan is saying Neal probably lost his job.
A couple of things.
Speculation by Duggan.
Alt was gone before the Giants picked. They knew Chargers were drafting him.
And I suspect barring injury, that is where he will remain.

Hey, if Dabs chooses Jones to be his man, and we crash and burn, then maybe Dabs should go with Jones…….somewhere out of town.

We saw on Hard Knocks that drafting Joe Alt was not a consideration, presumably because we had Evan Neal. Now Duggan is saying Neal probably lost his job.
I know exactly why they didn't consider Alt. Weapon for Daniel, and they'd already spent a high pick on Neal and don't want to admit he's a miss.
Have you considered that the Giants have admitted to themselves that Neal was a miss, admitted to themselves that they don’t do a good job with scouting college OL, therefore they decided to correct that mistake through FA, and use a #6 pick on a position they consider easier to scout?

Making an offer and having a deal in place are 2 different things
Yes, quite. And Duggan never even claimed his own knowledge of a Giants' offer. He cited the reporting of others on that. "The Giants reportedly offered, etc."
He also said he'd be watching Hard Knocks himself to see how serious negotiations actually got.

Hawkins has the physical characteristics of an ideal CB.

Schoen says he wishes Hard Knocks would have shown the work Kevin Abrams and Ed Triggs did with Brian Burns contract negotiations

And you come out to complain about it.
Jones is THE reason why every national preseason primer pegs the NYG to be a bottom 5 team in 2024.
