I know we're 3 or so days into practice, but I'd like some continuity on the OL, health provided of course. I thought they fucked that up last summer shuffling too many guys around.

Daboll said OL Jermaine Eluemunor (ribs) is in the same boat as yesterday, hoping he’ll be back after tomorrow’s day off. S Tyler Nubin (calf) also won’t practice again. Daboll said Nubin’s calf is “tight” but doesn’t view it as anything long term. DL Timmy Horne (calf) won’t practice today.

Giants Training Camp Day 3 thoughts

•Really rough day for Daniel Jones. Threw 6 times 20+ yards & all but one nice Malik Nabers throw was a miss. Some egregious. Plus an INT
•Flip side to that is defense is letting guys get open downfield. They were aggressive in their rush today
•Brian Burns had a lot of good plays & one nasty one on Andrew Thomas
•Jermaine Eluemunor practicing in 11 on 11
•Dante Miller living up to Turbo nickname. Deep TD on a 50+ yard wheel route & another beating the blitz
•Dane Belton with a sick INT to end practice undercutting a Malik Nabers back shoulder
•offense ran a lot of 4 WR & defense 6 DB’s with Andru Phillips
Hard to see

Yep, and the big unknown is when we will get one. Despite the QB, this team may be good enough to win 6 or 7 games, which would likely result in us drafting too low to get a top QB prospect. QB purgatory

We say this every year, but many don't listen. I've been burned by that too many times --both ways, getting excited and getting too down. We actually saw the opposite last year. Jones had a great camp throwing the ball down field. Then the games came. Historically, the offense is almost always behind the defense early on. Last year was one of the exceptions where offense looked great from the start.

Did he have a great camp? He was bad in the joint practices. The red flags were there.

robbieballs2003 : 7/26/2024 12:22 pm : link
It is the beginning of camp. He's coming off his ACL injury when almost nobody thought he'd be ready but now, and throwing to a new WR. Do you guys expect him to be perfect on all of his throws right now? What matters is that the reads are correct and he's going to the right spot with the ball. Fuckin chill out. It is what it is this year.

Breeze_94 : 7/26/2024 12:23 pm : link
That is a throw I’d expect a HS QB to complete. You can’t miss those. Not in practice, not in the game. The fact that our 6th year QB cannot complete that pass in shorts is worrisome.

Is this an overreaction to one throw? No, it’s not...because I’ve seen Jones overthrow wide open receivers for his entire career. Did it to Hyatt last year. Did it to Engram, Shep, Slayton…

he is an overthinker and the game is too fast for him.
If Jones is letting it fly and makes a mistake

i can live with it, He needs to be agressive, to many times last year he would check down and then the next dat you look and there is video of guys running wide open down the field..

That Nabers play is perhaps a good sign that he threw the ball even when he wasnt wide open..

I've been to enough camps to know not to read too much into it. But yes, I attended many sessions last year and Jones had a good camp. The bad day in joint practices was on the first day. Day 2 was good. I'm not making a case for Jones. But knee jerk reactions to camp reports is flawed. Eli had more than his share of rough camps, especially early on in camp.

Agreed. But it's like the five stages of grief, with the last stage being acceptance. Many fans are incredibly still not at that point. Maybe that's because with each new training camp there is renewed hope. But although that may be fine at other positions, it isn't at QB. We have two journeyman backups or "bridge starters" and a third QB whose career will likely be bouncing around various practice squads for a few years.

I am really pulling for Dante Miller. Such an interesting backstory (kinda got jobbed by the NCAA, but at least he can fall back on his degree from Columbia!).

Don't know why anyone would think year six would be any different. I hope I am wrong. I do think that Nabers is the type of talent where you can force him the ball some and that will take some of the reading and processing out of what Jones has to do.

Yup, that one. There’s a couple to Shep that stand out. Think one was 2022 vs Panthers, another was on a double move vs TB in the MNF game. The Slayton one on TNF vs WFT - you can blame that one Slayton, but fact of the matter is he had no one within 20 yards of him and had to chase down the ball to attempt an outstretched finger tip catch.

Toth029 : 7/26/2024 2:02 pm : link
What I want to see from Jones and the offense se is being more aggressive throwing the 10-19 yard shots and occasionally the ones 20+. If they miss, so be it, I just want to see Daboll drill it in them to try. To push it. It's practice and that's what these moments are for. Whining and bitching about training camp stats has been dumb since forever.

As for the scrimmages, I do recall the offense struggling last year in the first meeting with DET and they did really well in the second one. I'm looking forward to that and hopefully Nubin, Theo and Neal can make an appearance then. Jones playing this early and so much is surprising to me. I remember back in the spring, they weren't sure he would be ready by camp at all. Kyler Murray took his time and didn't shake off the rust from his time off until a long while after returning.
I have a pretty good idea what Jones is
UberAlias : 7/26/2024 2:09 pm : link
Most of us do. Main thing IMO is that he needs to be taking the shots down field when there're there. I get it, the line was a disaster and a half a year ago, especially early on, but he was flat out gun shy and didn't take the chances even when they were there and he had the protection to do it. If Jones doesn't do that, then he won't be QB for very long. No way is Dabs taking over play calling plus invested #6 overall on the most explosive player in the draft only to have his QB refuse to attack down field. So I won't get hung up on this day's practice report or that. But then the bullets are flying for real, he better have a set of balls.

@DDuggan21
No practice report today, so here are some observations:

• There was more action in this practice because they expanded beyond the red zone for the first time. And now, I wade gently into Daniel Jones criticism...

• It looked like Jones had salvaged a rough day with a strong two-minute drive, highlighted by a bomb to Malik Nabers and a strike to Jalin Hyatt on a back-shoulder throw. But then the offense got another drive and it ended with Jones forcing a pass to Nabers in the end zone that was undercut by a leaping Dane Belton for an interception.

This was the first practice Jones really aired it out and, aside from the deep shot to Nabers, his accuracy was poor. He air-mailed a wide-open Wan'Dale Robinson, under-threw Nabers on a slot fade (good coverage by Deonte Banks) and threw behind Daniel Bellinger on a crossing route. Hyatt failed to making a leaping catch on a deep crossing route.

The throw that stood out the most for the wrong reason was a deep pass across the field to Nabers. Jones rolled right and threw back to the left side to Nabers, who had gotten open against Cor'Dale Flott. The throw was behind Nabers, allowing Flott to contest the pass. Nabers still could have made the catch, but it should have been an easy TD if Jones threw the ball harder/leads Nabers more.

And now the Jones disclaimer: He's the starting QB. His play is going to be analyzed. Some days he will be good, other days he will be bad. The coverage will be positive on the good days and critical on the bad days. Now, onto other developments:

• The lock of the preseason is that rookie RB Dante Miller is going to become a fan favorite. He beat LB Darius Muasau for a 60-yard TD bomb from Drew Lock. Impressive job tracking the ball. Miller also caught a quick pass in the flat and showed why his nickname is "Turbo" after Tommy DeVito did a good recognizing pressure off the edge.

• Jimmy Morrissey was the first-team center for the final three drives. John Michael Schmitz didn't appear to be injured, so maybe just giving Morrissey some reps with the 1's in case he becomes the backup. He got more reps with the 2's than Austin Schlottmann in the spring. One concern with Morrissey is a tendency for high shotgun snaps. Had one today that Jones handled.

• Can't evaluate the trenches much at this point, but Brian Burns beat Andrew Thomas cleanly with an inside move on the play that Jones over-threw Wan'Dale. Don't see Thomas get beat like that often.

• Lot of dime work for the defense today. Nick McCloud remains the top slot corner and Dru Phillips was the sixth DB. McCloud played the "money" backer position in the dime.

• I still don't understand why Deonte Banks is sitting out multiple periods for Tre Hawkins. Daboll's answer pre-practice didn't provide much insight.

• It seems like Micah McFadden will have to battle for the starting ILB job. Dyontae Johnson and Carter Coughlin have gotten some reps with the 1's in camp. And it doesn't seem to be strictly related to a pitch count for McFadden since he was with the second-team defense at times today.

Two times out of five doesn’t mean Jones is good at it. Any QB in the league has the ability to be in the top 10 if a small sample size stat every now and then.

QBs that are good at it are doing it consistently. That’s the separation between good and bad.

The positives about Dante Miller.

The Giants will not be a contender this year and paying Barkley that obscene contract wouldn't have made sense from a positional value or financial standpoint. The Rams were not expected to compete that much for the division and a playoff spot, but they were right there in the WC. Their most experienced RB was Darrell Henderson (or Royce Freeman) and they started a 5th round rookie in Kyren Williams. They did pay Singletary a bit but Daboll is familiar with him and they have a sea of young backs behind him. I love the RB situation and can't wait to see all of them in the preseason get a chance to play.

I don't think accuracy is his problem at all. His problem is he doesn't throw the ball when he should. His putting the ball in the right spot too late. NFL QBs have to anticipate. Jones has to see it first.

Physically Daniel Jones could be very solid NFL starter. It is the mental part of the game where he still looks like a rookie starting his first game and not trusting or understanding anything he sees.

Sense I get: Nubin and Giants could have pushed it, hoping his calf would loosen up in practice, but smart move, obviously, was to back off and make sure a cramping issue does not turn into a calf issue. Calf injuries can be very tricky.

But Nubin's been engaged in practice from sideline. He was very vocal today at one point with teammate and fellow rookie DB Alex Johnson. Was coaching him up during one team period. #alpha

Dante Miller lived up to his Turbo nickname when fellow rookie LB Darius Muasau got caught up in man coverage on Miller out wide.

Drew Lock fired about a 50-yard bomb to Turbo, who raced into the end zone. Speed as advertised. #Giants100

If the Giants had a quarterback who was just a little more mentally capable than Jones, they would be contenders. Yet they're going backward with the QB talent.

If Jones has a massive year and stays healthy (which I am hoping for but not expecting) that would be great for the Giants because they can possibly trade him and recoup something.

The only way it makes sense to have him on the roster next year is that he had another below-average year and he is holding the spot until a rookie is ready.

This should not be a make or break year for Jones. The book should already be closed on Jones. 2024 can't be allowed to become the second time this front office confuses itself with what it has in Jones.

When all you throw is slants, 5 yard outs and safety valves, I am sure that is great.

No question you are right. But given the way his contract is constructed and the recent barrage of ludicrous contracts, it is a virtual certainty he will be back again for a seventh season. We are likely at least two years away from truly moving on from DJ.

"Giant fans need to accept that they don't have a QB." It's a tough place to be because it feels like there is no direction.

And yes, I'm rooting for Jones. But, it's year 6.

Looking forward to hearing it.

The thing is, what's the alternative to Jones in 2025? There's nothing in the pipeline (I'm assuming they aren't high on DeVito considering he was better than Jones last year but isn't getting a shot at the job).

If this season goes bad the enormity of their fuck up in the 2024 draft is going to come into stark relief.

They only "fucked up" if McCarthy, Nix, or Penix turn out to be studs.

Or Maye is a stud - if you think Schoen didn't up the ante enough.

is his accuracy deep or short or midfield. He throws a nice clean ball and it generally pretty accurate, for his career.

But then he had those incompletions in July practice so maybe I should rethink my take.

You should definitely rethink this. The reason Jones is reluctant to throw deep is that he himself knows he is inaccurate.

Yes, so inaccurate his nick name was Danny Dimes and had one of the highest completion record on deep passes 1st year and 2nd year was decent too.

Yes, I am not a jones fan. But how about give him more than three days with Nabers and Hyatt to get the timing down, especially coming off knee surgery.
Check back with me in August.

This convo has jumped the shark that people are now making shit up. I won't argue with anyone that say the game is too fast for him or he is injury prone but some of these takes are just false.

We have to realize that if you gotta go back 5 years to find when a player was good at something, that isnt really good.

Flip a coin and pick whichever year you want, the point is he has had 2 such years out of 6. People will latch onto that often-parroted deep ball accuracy stat without fully understanding what information feeds that stat.
