The Jets have already announced they’re not playing their starters.
RE: ... opportunity to wear 8 again sooner rather than later.
Hopefully he's ready for Week 1. I feel like he will start beside Bobby O really soon.
The big question is, will he and or McFadden be ready. If both are not we will most likely need an ILB who is not currently on the roster.
Muasau hasn't looked "good" but he also isn't completely lost out there. I feel like he's an adequate fill in for Mcfadden in the run game. Not ideal but I don't anticipate them adding a body ahead of him on the depth chart.

RE: RE: There's many reasons why NYG might fail in 2024
but not playing the starters for 20 or so snaps versus the Jets backups in a preseason game certainly isn't one of them.
Someone like Nabers or Thomas getting hurt while playing versus backup NYJ players would be a big problem.
Wasn’t the argument last year they didn’t play enough in the preseason?
It’s fine if they don’t want to play them, but then there’s no excuses for rust or that they need a couple of games to get going.
Of course there's no excuse. Giants are doing the same thing 80% of the other teams are doing.
The "slow start" last year had little to do with preseason last year. It was a combination of some bad luck and the team not being good to begin with.
The entire focal point of the offense all throughout camp was Darren Waller. Just like this camp we hear about Nabers every day, last camp we hard about how great Waller looked and how much of a problem he was gonna be for defenses to deal with and how him and DJ had great chemistry.
Then what happens? Waller hurts him hammy a day or two before the Dallas game. Then, on the first drive, Andrew Thomas and JMS get hurt. Giants are immediately down their best linemen (versus one of the best Dlines in the league) and their best weapon is compromised. The other weapons are a rookie Hyatt (who isn't even a real weapon yet in year 2) and Robinson coming off of ACL surgery. Also, its a torrential downpour.
The game went off the rails. It's not like they played much better the next 7 games either.
They have some better depth this year but if Nabers and Thomas go down before the first drive is over, I expect the season isn't going to go well.

Schmitz got hurt in game 4.
I've gone back and forth on this and have settled on sit them
- let the backups play, there are still some big decisions to make
- keep everyone healthy for Minny
- 1 or 2 drives isn't going to change anything, and the trade-off for any minimal production bump isn't worth a starter getting hurt
- I think these live practices vs Drt and the J-E-T-S are designed to substitute for live game, preseason action.

Does anyone really believe that the starters playing 8-12 snaps will have any real effect on the season? I don't...
They should give the starters a quarter. I think Jones needs to build confidence and trust in his body after a major knee injury and get used to taking a hit or 2 without panicking. I also think the DB'S can get all the work they can as well.
Number is probably coming from Bryce Ford-Wheaton.
He says he wants an even single number. That leaves 2, 4, 6,and 8. 4 is retired, 8 is Jones, 2 is Lock. So that leaves 6. He probably going to claim it once Bryce Ford-Wheaton is cut.
Why doesn't he just have them sew his 9 on upside down?

I wanted to see the starters, but changed my mind; you're right. No major injuries matters more that a few snaps.
Just seeing all the 1's healthy in a regular season game for at least one snap would be a small victory itself. Has that every actually happened?
He is also the Assistant Head Coach. His role will be the same as it's always been except on game day he won't be calling the plays and will instead serve more as someone overseeing the whole operation as Daboll divides his attentiion between head coaching and play-calling on offense.
p.s.--This is nothing new in the league, there are and have been plenty of occasions in which the head coach of a team is calling the plays on game day (including Jim Skipper under Fassel. The idea that Kafka suddenly has no purpose anymore is silly. And btw, Sean Payton is a former Giants offensive coordinator who had playcalling responsibilities stripped from him (and for good reason) and it didn't prevent him from later becoming a successful head coach. Nothing about this is remotely unprecedented.
That and Daboll pretty much confirming he'll call plays this season are the only nuggets of note I've seen. Neither asurprise.
Can you imagine a starter getting hurt playing this game against backups. Hell no. Sit them.
It's football. Guys get hurt. It's no worse than if someone gets hurt in the first quarter of the Minny game. And they can get hurt in practice too (Schmitz, Tracy, Nabers). You have to play the game in order to get ready to ready to play the game. And what difference does it make if they get hurt against starters or second teamers? If the Jets were playing starters you'd then be okay with the Giants playing starters?
In some ways it would be better to have an injury now than in two weeks. If it happens now you have two weeks to prepare and adjust. And have the chance to make a trade before cuts, or pick up guys who have been cut. In two-plus weeks that group of replacements will have been picked over.

Game prep practice so no observations from the final practice before cut day. Two personnel notes: Nick McCloud was with the starting defense and the top three safeties rotated throughout practice. Jason Pinnock and Tyler Nubin were the first two up.
OL Marcus McKethan didn’t practice. He’s already on the wrong side of the bubble, so bad time for an injury.

I think the most likely outcome is a CB claimed off waivers next week. I don't see a splash vet signing. Trade is an interesting possibility. My bold prediction is that Ojulari gets dealt in a player-for-player trade

Doesn't do any good to play starters against backups. The argument last year was that camp was "Soft". That wasn't the case this year. Most teams will be "rusty" to start the year. Most have not played their starters much.
taken over playcalling, he's taken over the entire offense. He's running the meetings now, he's the voice they're constantly hearing.
Essentially, he's taken over the OC duties as the top offensive minded HC's do. I think it's going to make a big difference, going from a greenhorn in Kafka to a seasoned pro.

Looking forward to seeing him call a real game.
Kafka never seemed to be able to grasp the flow of the game. He seemed to call a play just to call that play instead of seeing what was working and what the defense was giving. He would often disrupt the flow with weird plays.

tend to agree with that, section. To boot, I give credence to some of the ugly fallout over the Wink crew revelations. I’m sure MK wasn’t too happy with how the offense fared and how BD may have let some shit fly. I don’t think that stink has been entirely extinguished and don’t expect Kafka to return in ‘25, regardless of how the O does this season

Congrats! I dropped my son at Ft. Moore in July. He'll be there until Christmas for infantry training and then starts Ranger School down there.
He got there in June, finished up infantry training at same time. Maybe they are in the same unit! He will be off to 82nd Airborne.
Wow, crazy! My son will be in the 25th Infantry in Hawaii after Ranger School. So proud of all of the people that make this commitment!
Hopefully he's ready for Week 1. I feel like he will start beside Bobby O really soon.

The big question is, will he and or McFadden be ready. If both are not we will most likely need an ILB who is not currently on the roster.
Excellent news. He looked like Patrick Willis in that 1st preseason game.
Apparently he wants a single digit, but 88 would be cool for many reasons.
Nabers has the potential to reach or even exceed Hakeem Nicks’ impact.

Feel confident after watching practice that the Giants are not going to play their starters on Saturday in their final preseason game against the Jets.
The Jets have already announced they’re not playing their starters.

Muasau hasn't looked "good" but he also isn't completely lost out there. I feel like he's an adequate fill in for Mcfadden in the run game. Not ideal but I don't anticipate them adding a body ahead of him on the depth chart.

25th ID! That’s where I was stationed 1/21 Bravo Co. Tropical Lightning, baby!

The #Jets will not play Aaron Rodgers or any key starters in Saturday’s preseason finale vs. the Giants.
So, officially, Aaron Rodgers will make his return to the field in Week 1 on Monday Night Football against the 49ers—nearly a full year since rupturing his Achilles.
Just beat me to it.. I am of the mindset we shouldn't play our starters..
I disagree. 1st team needs work especially the oline and Jones. They cannot eff around. Even if only a few series.
Well, I am staying with my opinion. NOTHING gained playing guys who are 2nd or 3rd teamers. The Oline is fine, full of VETS who have shown they work well together already even with sporadic use. Jones playing doesn't change anyone's narrative and won't give him anything but "confidence" and if you need that we are screwed.
<snip>
Phil Simms disagrees. On his podcast yesterday he talked about how important confidence is to a QB (no he wasn't talking about Jones but Tua).

but not playing the starters for 20 or so snaps versus the Jets backups in a preseason game certainly isn't one of them.

Congrats to you, your son and your whole family.

Let's hope he greatly exceeds it.

The secondary is already full of backups, no need playing Banks, Pinnock and our LB'ers are already playing mostly backups inside..
We would get more from practicing ourselves than we will playing the Jets- but our backups need to play a LOT. I would like to see Lock play the whole first half and devito the whole second half..
Players who NEED to play:
Evan Neal
Jake Kubas
Matt Nelson (could be late round trade worthy to a team in need)
Allen Robinson
Bryce Ford-Wheaton
John Jiles
Ayir Asante
Casey Rogers
Alex Johnson
Tommy Devito
Drew Lock
The starting O line won't get to play together but they need to get the three not named Runyan game time with Schmitz.

Schmitz got hurt in game 4.
- keep everyone healthy for Minny
- 1 or 2 drives isn't going to change anything, and the trade-off for any minimal production bump isn't worth a starter getting hurt
- I think these live practices vs Drt and the J-E-T-S are designed to substitute for live game, preseason action.
That and Daboll pretty much confirming he'll call plays this season are the only nuggets of note I've seen. Neither asurprise.

Can you imagine a starter getting hurt playing this game against backups. Hell no. Sit them.
Does anyone really believe that the starters playing 8-12 snaps will have any real effect on the season? I don't...

Out of the box thinking. I like it.
He's pretty busy doing this and that

I might be in the minority, but I vehemently disagree with not playing the 1s a couple of series on Saturday.They-and especially a very polarizing man around here-need it after the Texans game & how practice went yesterday.

I wanted to see the starters, but changed my mind; you're right. No major injuries matters more that a few snaps.
Just seeing all the 1's healthy in a regular season game for at least one snap would be a small victory itself. Has that every actually happened?
p.s.--This is nothing new in the league, there are and have been plenty of occasions in which the head coach of a team is calling the plays on game day (including Jim Skipper under Fassel.

Slayton-Nabers-WanDale were the clear top 3 for today’s practice, not Jalin Hyatt, per Pat Leonard.
Hyatt was working with the 2nd and 3rd team offense.
He adds that it's "something to note."

He is also the Assistant Head Coach. His role will be the same as it's always been except on game day he won't be calling the plays and will instead serve more as someone overseeing the whole operation as Daboll divides his attentiion between head coaching and play-calling on offense.

I’m not saying we fans are wrong, but I’d like to hear the coaches rationale before claiming I know better than they do.

Brian Daboll won’t reveal his playing time plans for #Giants starters in this Saturday’s #Jets preseason finale.
Says backup QB Drew Lock likely will only be an emergency QB available for this game
Sounds like Tommy DeVito likely will go the whole way. Daboll says they won’t add a QB

Make the most of it, Tommy
Minny is a huge game to win. There won't be very much patience if the Giants start again very slowly.
@PLeonardNYDN
Giants players on the side today: QB Drew Lock, CB Cor’Dale Flott, CB Tre Herndon, S Gervarrius Owens, LB Micah McFadden, LB Matt Adams, LB Dyontae Johnson, G Marcus McKethan, TE Lawrence Cager
Out & not seen: PR Gunner Olszewski, S Jonathan Sutherland
TBD what Jon Runyan does... Runyan to the side with the strength coaches as well
@art_stapleton
ILB Dyontae Johnson (ankle) is out of the walking boot and working on side field with training staff. Good step forward for him and his status with cut to 53 looming Tuesday. #Giants100
@DDuggan21
