Apathy has set in

Greg from LI : 9/15/2024 7:57 pm
I’ve never reached this point with the Giants before. I simply don’t care much anymore. This is how I felt about the Knicks 5-10 years ago. I just expect everything they try to do to be a miserable failure
......

I gave up after that 2018 road game against the Eagles. This is a black hole era of Giants football.
Same.
SoZKillA : 9/15/2024 8:01 pm : link
I used to let losses bother me, now? I don’t even care. This team has no direction, no identity. They’re losers. They will be losers as long as Mara and his cronies are there. People need to stop going to games and buying merchandise.
Greg, you don't start a lot of threads

But, I remember the night of the Eagles playoff loss you started a thread saying the arrow was pointing up. I think a lot of us thought it. Sucks how wrong we all were.

Also, this is the worst era of Giants football.

Don’t give me the 1970s crap response. In football today rebuilds and turnarounds can happen in a year(not the Giants).

Plus the rule changes help you and the expanded playoff format.
Agree
Mike from Ohio : 9/15/2024 8:03 pm : link
I used to get really frustrated at these types of losses. Now I just don’t care. This team is a boring mess and it is hard to see the path back to respectability with such incompetent people hiring more incompetent people.

We’re the new Cleveland Browns.

I think apathy is fair to say. I believe I would have felt the same if we pulled this one out as I do now. I just dont care and trying to care isnt working anymore.
I r emember in 2011 I was so excited to finally get season tickets
Hammer : 9/15/2024 8:03 pm : link
Now, I am just as happy that I gave them up.

I still watch the Giants on Sunday but just sit there quietly and expect them to find a way to lose the game.

I never watched quietly, I was always heavily invested in the game and got loud and upset when things didn't go well.

For 40 years I was an excited fan.

The organization did a great job of beating it out of me.

And my 15 year old son could not possibly care less.

Great job Mara.

Season tickets since the 1950’s I watch today game and didn’t really care, I know 100 people will take my place but the giants have sapped me of my interest
I am honestly jist passing the time with football
nygiants16 : 9/15/2024 8:06 pm : link
til the NBA starts, cant wait for the Knicks season..

I can watch the Giants and watch the young guys and see players for the future but i cant be locked in to a team that has zero chance and with a QB who is not the future..

I will always root for wins but there was a time a loss like today would effect the rest of my night and not watch anymore games...

Not anymore

This ownership has no clue how to dig the Giants out of this 11 year mess. They are too dumb to hire a football operations director. It will take lucking ass backwards into an elite qb in the next draft or 2.

The Mara’s aren’t particularly smart people, right place at right time, Wellington wasn’t greedy but what made him a good owner? John Mara shouldn’t run a McDonald’s but his name says otherwise.
They deserve apathy
GiantGrit : 9/15/2024 8:17 pm : link
When I was younger I used to hate "bandwagon" fans. Now I get it. I'll never switch teams but I've spent a ridiculous amount of time watching the Giants play just absolutely horrid football with no clear upward trajectory, i'm relatively done doing so.

I enjoy reading reactions here and pondering who the next regime will be. For all of the meddling comments Mara gets around here, my biggest concern is more simple - he has proven to be absolutely atrocious at hiring. He should totally bow out of the process at this point. Hire an outside consulting firm. Won't happen though.

Watched until the Singletary fumble...

It was such a beautiful day, and I was tired of the endless commercials (NFL games are basically a TV commercial, mostly for FF and betting, with some football mixed in) and endless drives by Washington.

At least there was no moronic "it's 3rd down!!!" being piped out of the PA, preceding another 3rd down conversion.

Went out for a nice bike ride; who cares I thought, they'll figure out a way to lose.

I wasn't wrong.

Boring and bad....

and are a chore to watch. Just a very poor example of what good teams in the NFL do week in and week out. And it looks like it is not going to change for a while. Forget wasting your time on them on nice fall Sundays. When it is a rainy Sunday or when the cold weather comes later in the season maybe then it will be possible to justify watching a game.

How did that guy have his team come out of training camp totally unprepared...two years in a row?

How did that guy morph into Joe Judge?

Watching the game today I wasn't even sure if I wanted them to win or not. Can't believe I'm already thinking about tanking in week 2.

I'm really more rooting for young player to develop at this point than I am wins. Loved seeing how well Dru Phillips and Nabers looked.

The kicker situation didn't even make me angry, just laughed at the absolute level of incompetence knowingly going into the game with an injured kicker. I mean how fucking stupid are they????

Is that it has to get worse before it gets better. And that’s what this season is all about. A win today would have been useless for the long term. So I was more “amused” by how they lost than angry that they lost.

I'm starting to think he was always Joe Judge. The 6-1 start was a mirage, as we were pretty bad the rest of that year as well and just lucked into an overrated Vikings team in the first round.

he was all along. The 7-2 start and the playoff game sucked everyone in. We ignored that they went 2-5-1 to finish out the year. The team has gone 8-18-1 since that 7-2 start. He's not a good HC and he hasn't been one.

81_Great_Dane : 9/15/2024 9:34 pm : link
I'm not as mad about today as others on here — or, at least, I'm not mad about the same things. The offense was better. Jones played like a competent NFL quarterback. The line is coming together. However, the defense is a disaster. Maybe the light bulb goes on next week for them, maybe not. If not, it's gonna be a long, long season.

I am mad about essentially losing the game because there was no Plan B should 40-year-old Graham Gano get hurt. Though if the receivers made the catches on the 2-point tries that even an average NFL receiver should make, the Giants probably win this game.

To echo some of what's been said by others above: The Giants have been a part of my life since I was a kid. My first season as a fan was 1970. So, those 100 GIants seasons? I've been a fan for more than half of them. My father was a fan another 25 or so before that. (A few days before he died in 2016, we watched the Giants together in his hospital room. They lost.) My great-uncle watched the Giants pretty much since the inception of the team. Said he used to watch from the train platform above the Polo Grounds when he couldn't afford a ticket.

I got through the 70s, though I spent some of that time in college and couldn't watch much. But now I'm 65 years old, I have some health issues, and I don't expect to have that many seasons ahead of me. 10 if I'm lucky. How do I choose to spend my late summer and autumn Sundays, knowing there are probably less than 100 healthy Sundays left? Do I give my scarce time to this badly managed, shabby organization that I no longer enjoy watching? Or do I go for a walk in the woods with my wife, or have family over, or almost anything else? I'm leaning toward almost anything else.

My feelings towards the Giants has gradually declined and honestly I just don't care what they do. This is the first year I didn't follow camp, watch preseason or read football threads.

The Knicks are getting ready for camp, they're playing exciting ball, contenders and I can't believe I'm saying this. The Knicks are the best run sports franchise in the NYC Metro area.

The doctors, at first, said I’d be lucky to make it to the summer of 2025 but I know I’ll surpass that (with ease) and I’m doing my best to keep the cancer at bay. But something tells me I might not live long enough to see winning football from the Giants again. I wonder if I’ll keep watching. I wonder if I care anymore. 45 years of rooting and now this.

Awful to read this but hopefully they get a W in Cleveland for you

Like many who have eloquently recounted their fandom over decades, I started following the Jints in the 69-70 season. Highs, lows, we've seen them all. I guess as a result, my expectations ae muted relative to those who came into the fold with consistent playoff berths and super bowls. One thing I can say, despite the past and current futility, it is still entertaining - at least to me. I still care but realize the my identity has nothing to do with the Jints but yet they are still a part of me. Apathy is the enemy to all except narcissists.

Between four years of Dave Gettleman and six years of Daniel Jones, the Giants aren't trying to compete for championships. It's completely unserious.

Yep

That's where I've been at for years. It was obvious from Gettlemans intro and post draft press remarks that we had zero chance to win with him. Zero. With Jones, it's not quite zero, but pretty damn close. So if the people who run the organization don't care about winning, why should we care?

Gotta power through and see what the 2023 and 2024 draft classes can become this year. 2022 mostly a bust at this point

Yeah. But we have been powering through a decade plus of wasted seasons. At some point powering through it gets old.
I don't think there's a full appreciation
eclipz928 : 9/16/2024 6:45 am : link
for just how big of a mess Dave Gettleman left. Between bad contracts and bad personnel, and playing in a tough division, I said from the outset when Joe Schoen was hired that it would probably take 3 seasons to clean this up and properly position the team.

I'm not apathetic because the Giants are where I expected them to be at this point. There's a lot of pieces in place already, they just need the right quarterback - and I think they'll be in position to get one before the start of next season.

ryanmkeane : 9/16/2024 7:00 am : link
I’m somewhat down on Schoen but picks like Nabers and Phillips make me think he can still be our GM long term. Plus, he did recognize the Neal fuck up and seemingly had a good plan for the OL.

At some point it has to translate to wins.
Keep the game in perspective

This will be a great time for the off-field entertainment.

Daboll has a quite an endeavor ahead of him to keep his job.
Might be a train wreck.

He took a much worse roster during his first year in 2022 and turned them into a good team; a team that had most of the bounces go their way because their coach created those opportunities. I thought they finally had a guy cut from the same cloth as Parcells who thinks outside the box.

How did that guy have his team come out of training camp totally unprepared...two years in a row?

How did that guy morph into Joe Judge?

A hot two months, and then the book was out.

It’s about a toss-up whether to watch or turn it off at half-time, which I’ve done the past two weeks. But…60 some odd years as a dyed-blue-in-the-wool Giants fan, for the second straight Sunday night I couldn’t sleep, agitated. Maybe there’s a Giants AA near me.
me neither Greg. Growing up in the '70s we couldn't wait

each Sunday. At least they had a good defense and played hard.

This is beyond bad now. They are rudderless. D is getting gashed. I get trading Leonard Williams, but maybe get a run stuffer to play along side Dexter?

I listened on the radio yesterday, and not too intently. Too nice a day to sit inside and get aggravated watching on TV.

I've said it to every person that asks.

"I'm apathetic"

My wife says to me while watching the game last week in the 2nd half......"Wow!.....you're not upset? Normally you'd be freaking out and in a bad mood.....what's the change?

and I just answer "Apathy, hon....apathy"....she says "aww, I'm sorry", and I say "don't be...I really really honestly do not care"

That's what they've done to me....and apparently a lot of others as well......It is a sad state of affairs....wow

The Jake : 9/16/2024 10:15 am : link
and I think I'm cursed to always care, no matter what. it's hard-wired into my brain. it's almost like an autonomic nervous response. I can't NOT cheer if we make a good play and I can't NOT scream at the television when we don't. it's as much a part of who I am as anything else.

but! when it comes to apathy, the thing that worries me the most: my son. he's 10 years old and the only Giants football he's seen has been awful. apathy means that maybe he never becomes as big a fan as me - which could be a good thing for him - but for the Giants, it means breaking that family bond that is what put most of us into this community to begin with.

John Mara is doing more damage than he understands.

Meh. I was 10 years old when the Giants finally won the division in 1997. If he's like me, he'll be more into the Rangers or Yankees, or Knicks during these down years. I remember not particularly caring about what the Giants were doing but I would get kind of excited (well, because it was school and school is useless garbage) around Friday and maybe give the Giants some thought.

Apathy is the correct number here, last year when I was at work we were all standing around and we couldn't figure out who Buffalo was playing. I had no idea, but myself and somebody had to look it up and said "New York Giants" I remember laughing to myself because, as Evan Neal once pointed out, why would a tiger care about a loser?

Or wait, during those Dave Brown years we had Michael Jordan in the NBA so that drew a ton of attention my way.

I'm not sure there's a 100 people waiting to take your place (or anyone else's). The Giants now have regular season primary ticket availability and are still running ads for season tickets with the season already underway.

It was only a generation ago that the Giants not only sold out the whole building via season tickets, but also had a decades-long waiting list to get season seats. The new stadium and PSAs wiped out the waiting list, and then the subsequent team performance over the past decade took care of the rest.

The 100 people waiting to take your place are just ticket brokers who will sell to visiting fans.
it's a real problem i think
LG in NYC : 9/16/2024 11:09 am : link
just an observation but seems to me most of the younger generation care more about indiv players (for FF) vs rooting for a particular team... my kids say they are Giants fans (b/c of me) but on Sunday's they watch whatever games their fantasy players are on and care way more about that than how the Giants did (n fact, we mostly make fun of the Giants).

So when apathy sets in for us older folks, who still tend to follow teams and go to the games, I have to think that will lead to real problems for teams like the Giants who are just flat out boring to root for.

I was excited for the Daboll/Schoen era and year 1 proved worth the hype but by week 4-5 last year, I mostly stopped watching... I played golf or went to the beach instead.
This season, I was all geeked up for Week 1 but was quickly deflated (for all the reasons discussed ad nauseum here and elsewhere) and decided to play golf yesterday instead of spending the day indoors watching this flawed team who, if we are being honest, are better served losing than eeking out wins against other bad teams.

LG in NYC : 9/16/2024 11:12 am : link
Obviously we still care, otherwise we wouldn't be posting on a Giants message board... the fandom in us won't go away (cursed I suppose) but how we act (i.e., watching or going to games) is changing and has changed as the Giants have sunk into the malaise they find themselves.
It's just become a fact of life
I Love Clams Casino : 9/16/2024 11:38 am : link
that the New York Giants can not win....they just can NOT do it......we all didn't believe it for a while.....but now we all know....we know the game is over before the Giants step on the field, so why get all emotional and worked up about it when you know that have no chance?......you can only beat a dead horse so many times before it becomes just a bloody patch in the grass.....that's what the Giants are....a bloody patch in the grass......

you're 100% right. it wasn't too long ago that I would spend hundreds or thousands going to games, tailgating, buying merch at the stadium, etc.

now I watch at home on t.v. because I can't bear to spend that kind of money only to watch my team shit the bed over and over.

it's a vicious cycle of losing that perpetuates more misery that perpetuates more losing that we're in right now.

I still watch the Giants, but I’ve become like a robot watching them. I don’t get happy or upset. I’m just indifferent.

Also, I’m not ashamed to admit that if it’s a boring/ugly or non competitive game, I’ll tune into something else at the bar.

It is what it is. I’m just glad for YouTube so I can fire up videos of when the Giants were fun to watch.

The kids are right. This team is boring garbage. I don't blame them for not wanting any part of this smelly ass juice team and their endless stupidity.

The Giants were not a big draw among my peers either in the early to mid 90s, especially since Dallas was the team to beat during those days.

I think I know just about as many Dallas fans who I went to school with more than Giants fans, if not, more.

YouTube is a game changer. I remember going to my mom's house and she was disappointed with me (big surprise) because I didn't know if the Giants won the day they played.

It was 2018 and it was a few weeks after the aforementioned road loss to Philly. It was the day that they beat the Washington Whatevers (when they had Mark Sanchez lol) and I told her, I don't waste my time watching that hot trash. I'd rather sleep in and then check the score later on. What's that quote about not suffering fools gladly?

This was even during the Eli Manning days.

If you were to ask me about a Giants game from 2005-2012, I could probably tell you every little single detail. Hell, even the Jim Fassel says, I could go on.

Why watch that bowl of fart garbage? That Eagle 2018 game blew my mind. I was never really a conspiracy guy but, there was no reason for the Giants to lose that game. None. It really made me think is Pat schermer really that stupid or did he throw that game on purpose to win a bet?

It really makes me wonder, sometimes.

If not for my tailgate peeps 50+ on average traveling the distance I do to attend games, just do not know. From 1976 to 2005 did not miss a single game, including preseason.

You try and hold the faith, but its gone from bad to worse to barely competitve. For now I still attend, but honestly pondering for what at times.
