NFT: ⚾Mets vs. Phillies NLDS thread⚾ Game 1 – 4:08 pm EDT start ⚾

Optimus-NY : 10/5/2024 1:05 pm
Welcome to this best-of-five National League Division Series thread between the 6th seeded Mets (89-73) & the 2nd seeded N.L. East Champion Phillies (95-67). The Mets beat the Brewers by the hairs on their chinny-chin-chins in the NLWS two days ago despite losing the season series to them during the regular season. The Phillies, like the Brewers, won the regular season series against the Mets 7 games to 6. The Mets will be looking for some payback against the Phillies the same way they did against the Brewers. Click HERE to read a preview of this Playoff Series. Enjoy 😊!

that's a really nice boost for peterson rest of the way. let's him only have to get through the top of the order 2x with a 3rd vs the bottom w/ stott and marsh both a lot worse vs lefties this year. realmuto was better vs lefties but not a huge split. 740 vs 780 ops.

F-ing Senga
pjcas18 : 10/5/2024 2:25 pm : link
man. F-ing Mendoza man. I'm sure it wasn't his decision alone, but you know how things go with blame and credit.

This is the kind of decision that can make Mendoza look like a legend. Like Tony La Russa or I don't know Connie Mack territory, WS win or not if Senga is successful having the balls to have him start game 1 is so huge.

After his last outing never in a million years did I think this is how this would play out. And I love Senga when asked how many pitches he'll throw? "If they say 10 pitches, I'm all in for 10 pitches. If they say 200, I'm in for 200"

Predictions?
Optimus-NY : 10/5/2024 2:46 pm : link
Brazoban left off the 26
dannysection 313 : 10/5/2024 3:06 pm : link
Not surprised...

Also, Tyron Taylor is officially ahead of Harrison Bader as centerfielder, I guess.

Bader just hasn't shown enough stick of late. Both bring defense and speed. Taylor hasn't hit much recently either, but had a better season with RISP.

I think they went with Senga versus Megill or Peterson as the latter two have experience coming in from the bullpen. The routine is different when you don’t know for sure how much time you will have to warm up. You go Senga to Peterson to Megill and each “reliever” has a different style. Detroit has won games that way this year.
Mets are the underdog

No pressure on them
moespree : 10/5/2024 3:36 pm : link
I know it's easy to say when it's the playoffs and in a sense there is pressure on everyone, but you know what I mean.

The Phillies are the favorite, with home field and the team that clinched everything weeks ago. It's a role reversal for them compared to recent years.

And I get the sense the Mets don't feel much pressure either. I don't know if I'd say that about this core group of guys in recent years. But I feel it this year, they are loose and feel good about themselves.
I hope my Philly hood...

Senga

Literally 1 pitch difference in this game.

Senga did fine… Schwarber does that to a lot of people

Mets aren’t even competitive versus Wheeler so far. Gonna need to figure something out because Wheeler’s pitch count is low.

Because of the length of his rehab so far he was never going to go more than an inning or two. It was about preventing Philly from doing their usual line-up against lefties.

Horrible job by the HP ump

Hope we get some strike calls that are a foot off the plate too.
As good as Iglesias was during the regular season
Mike in NY : 10/5/2024 5:11 pm : link
I almost might try to give us a spark and put Acuña at 2B and put more of an extra base threat in the 5 hole.
Bad enough having to go against a guy
moespree : 10/5/2024 5:11 pm : link
Throwing 98 on the road. Don't need the ump to help him with foot off the plate strike calls.

what should have been a K turns into a full count walk ahead of schwarber.

I see the Mets aren’t getting that same inside pitch that Wheeler

nimmo with a 2 strike single

this team is just locked in right now. forgetting this game since it's obviously now in the bullpen's hands, but this postseason this team will go as far as the BP takes it. if they keep games close i dont think too many opposing BPs are going to be able to consistently get through this lineup in pressure situations and 1 run games.

i still trust maton more than stanek. my question is diaz even if he only has 1 inning in him. have him face schwarber, turner, harper, and if nec castellanos/bohm.

best case he gets the first 3 and castellanos in the 9th cant tie it. you have maton and stanek for 9th.

Maton

i dont think you can throw danny young into a late game situation with the 3 batter rule.

if there's a lefty heavy 5th/6th inning sure. late game you have to go with the guys who have been there before.

and Stanek have both pitched in WS with the Astros and have a playoff track records. One has a ring with HOU (Stanek?)

I wonder if that fed into the decision to use them, figuring they won't have the same jitters maybe that other could. not sure who I would have used anyway, other than Diaz.

same. he gave Maton 1 call in the 8th that was similar to what he gave Philly all day but then didnt give it to Stanek. incredibly inconsistent, and almost entirely towards PHI.

I was scrolling through Twitter while watching the game and every baseball pundit did nothing but rave about Wheeler's start. It went on for 15 minutes and I kept saying to myself, but it's a 1-0 game and Wheeler threw 111 pitches. The real story is the Mets pitching. They stole the Wheeler game.

Now they can win it at Citi regardless what happens in game 2. Right? it's 2, 2, 1, for the DS correct?
Hopefully Senga isn't needed the rest of this series.

Yup, Tue/Wed in NY.

1-0 and getting Wherler out during a bullpen game? I'd think the Mets would sign up for that every time.

31 pitches today, probably bumps up to 50 or so for his next start.

im fascinated to see what happens if megill comes out of the BP. it would be something if he can pitch like his brother in shorter bursts. that would be a huge development for the BP.
A little surprised he didn't let Peterson go longer

As they say...credit to Petterson, Garrett (6 outs no baserunners-wow), Maton and even Stanek.

I was watching Wheeler's pitch count and knew he'd only be able to go 7. I thought if it were 1-0 going into the 8th, they'd have a chance....

So many good AB's in the 8th....I especially loved the AB from Iglesias....11 pitches? That has to demoralize a pitcher, especially when the AB ends in a knock.

And then Nimmo with the 2-out hit to score Bader in the 9th.

Huge game tomorrow....Phils are not going to lay down and die.

Guess we see JD tomorrow against the leftie.

any harder than they did today. It was full on hero worship.

Meanwhile, not sure if any of you felt this way but I was counting his pitches knowing our guys would wait him out and ounce on whoever came out first. Alvarez leadoff single and the rest is history.

I texted my brother who is a Yankee fan but married into a Phillies family, something to the effect of “The Phillies better score more than 1 run if they hope to win this game”

Sure enough…

Easy to steal Game 1 against ole friend and now foe Wheeler. You knew he wanted to stick it to us especially hard in a playoff game after what the wilponzos pulled with him in 2015. Well he did stick it to us but the team waited it out and struck as soon as he was out. Phillies great lineup only getting one run with all our pitchers doing their jobs.

This lineup knows it can strike at any time at this point.
The 7th inning was massive

Pete Alonso: “By now, I’m sure a lot of Mets fans know a bit about my ties to New York. That my great-grandpa moved his family to Queens in the ’30s when things were getting unstable and dangerous in his home country of Spain.

But the bonds between my family and this city go so much deeper than just that. My grandpa grew up in Queens and graduated from NYU after serving in WWII. He actually met my grandma down on Wall Street while he was in grad school. The story goes that he didn’t know how to type, so his plan was to try to find the best-looking receptionist in New York City to help him with his papers … and the rest is history.

My grandma delivered my dad at a hospital in — where else? — Queens. And when he was a kid, there were aunts and uncles and cousins around all the time. I was born down in Florida, but from the very first time I visited New York as a teenager … man, I just felt such a special connection to this place.

Then, when the Mets drafted me, it was like destiny or something. When they brought me to town to sign my contract, I couldn’t stop looking around and thinking about how my grandpa might have driven down the same streets back in the day, or walked past the same buildings.

And now, every time I put on my uniform, there’s real, genuine significance there. I feel it deeply. I absolutely cherish the fact that the name ALONSO is what’s on the back of my jersey. It’s not my name, as an individual. It doesn’t say PETE back there. It’s my family’s name. My family’s history! And I feel truly blessed by all the connections there.

My grandpa passed away before I made it to the bigs, but in so many ways I feel like he’s out there with me when I pull that jersey on and head out to first. He loved baseball — he’d tell me stories all the time about listening to Brooklyn Dodgers games on the radio back in the day — and I know he’d be so proud. Not just because his grandson made it to the show. But also because he made it to the show here. In this particular place.

He’d be so happy that there’s an Alonso out in Queens doing his thing at the ballpark.” http://playerstribu.ne/Alonso

bohm may be scuffling but he had .171 babip in sept. his hard hit rate was pretty close to his season average and his avg ev in the 2nd half of sept was 89.6mph.

k-rate was 20% over that period of time so he is putting the ball in play and not so differently than he had been all year.

you can’t nibble and pitch around Turner and Harper every time. Especially in the 9th with 2 outs. If Turner beats you with a HR so be it.
to be a little fair to megill it's his first game as a reliever
Eric on Li : 10/6/2024 7:30 pm : link
that is not an ideal moment to step into. walking turner was a colossal mistake but it was the first time he pitched in a situation like that to know how big of a mistake it was.

totally different operating standard than a SP.

moze1021 : 10/6/2024 7:44 pm : link
If he gets Castellanos there then it would have been better for bottom 10 than if he has gotten Turner.

But he didn't.

I'm fine with not letting Harper beat you. Castellanos is easier to pitch against..but you HAVE to execute your pitches or he'll make you pay.
I'm surprised I'm frustrated.

Interesting comparison. I do see the connection to the Nembhard game this past spring with the Knicks, however, it's all still in front of them given it's now a best of 3 and we have home field advantage. Opportunity definitely lost in terms of the strangle-hold, but any road team has to sign immediately for a split in these playoff series.

How is everyone else feeling on the off day today? Count me as cautiously optimistic. I think the lesson learned yesterday is that at some point we're going to have to pitch to, and retire Harper in a big spot. Castellanos is a good professional hitter who, as we've now seen, will capitalize on opportunities to drive in men in scoring position.

Kodai Senga "continues to feel good" following his Game 1 start, per Carlos Mendoza. Sounds like he is going to be the Mets' Game 5 starter if that one becomes necessary.

Senga would theoretically be good for three innings.

Jose Quintana is starting Game 4.

It appears the Athletics are poised to make a splash in the international free-agent market.

Shotaro Morii, a 17-year-old Japanese high school star is likely to sign with the A's as an international free agent, Yahoo Japan reported Monday.

The article, translated from Japanese to English reads:

"On the 7th, it was learned from an interview with a related person that Shotaro Morii (17 years old, third year student at Toho High School in Tokyo), an infielder who is attracting attention as a talented pitcher and batter, is likely to join the Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Wouldn't Severino have four days rest and be the better option?

Low and away is the way to pitch Castellanos, won't hurt you there. His game winner was inner half of plate.

The Mets bullpen concerns me over the next two games.
KayvonOjulari515 : 10/7/2024 3:40 pm : link
Very few of the Mets relievers can pitch effectively on back-to-back days. The Mets have to get at least six good innings each from Manea and Quintana. However, even if they do, that's still six innings the Mets would need from the bullpen over the next two days.

The Mets should be able to win one of these home games. What gives me hope is the Mets would have Senga and Peterson on full rest for Game 5. Severino would also be on full rest on Friday and could pitch if needed. If the Mets could get Wheeler out of the game after seven in a close game, the Mets could have the advantage in the late innings of a Game 5 as the Phillies bullpen has been awful to start this series.

LGM!

they kicked the shit out of LAD and won the game going away. If only we could be so lucky tomorrow.

Maton and Garrett should have proper rest and be good for 6-9 combined outs. It'd be great to give Diaz another day off, but I think you have to give him another shot if you need 3 outs (over going with someone like Ottavino). Two days rest for Peterson also who has looked good coming out of the pen.

I feel excited and angry. I think the players wanna get back out there. They KNOW they can beat the Phillies, they just ran outta time. I think they're in the Phillies' heads now. They got to their pen two days in a row---not an accident. The only thing that worries me is the Diaz factor: I don't trust him. Hopefully by giving him more rest, he'll be more effective. I also think and feel that the day off today will do do wonders for them as will finally being home for th first time in about two weeks for these next two games. Citi Field is gonna be a mad house! Stanek was huge, the way they've hit our BP so far.

But so true for all of us long suffering Met fans.

Give David Stearns a life time contract, jeez...

What a ride.

And it's "so baseball" that 3 starters who all contributed to this and other post season wins were even not on the Mets roster on May 1...Vientos, Iglesias and Winker

Huge to have Peterson available. Feel so much better using a lefty against Harper.

I figure they're gonna save Peterson, Stanek, and Maton for Game 5---ESPECIALLY Peterson. Senga won't go mor than 3 or 4 innings (roughly 50 pitches) for Game 5 if they get to that point. After that it would be Peterson.

Game 4's bullpen will feature Buttó, Garrett, Díaz, Ottavino, D. Young, and Megill. I don't think they'll throw Diaz more than inning tomorrow and that they'd like to preserve Megill too as long as possible and would pitch him only if the game hits extra innings.

I could see Peterson being available if they needed a lefty who was not a time bomb against right handed batters in a key spot.

what do you think happens with Matt Allan?

I thought for sure he'd be in the AFL. So without pitching in a real game in this decade, they won't likely add him to the 40-man right? Do you think someone claims him?

Not something I'm terribly worried about right now, but also would hate to lose him for nothing after all this time.

Rory : 10/9/2024 10:13 am : link
but first, I seem to have lost my touch and forgot how to post a photo from my phone. Could use a refresher....

But yesterday was absolutely insane, park holds 42,800 and there wasn't even standing room in the place. It was at full capacity and everyone had an orange towel to whip around.

Introductions were so fun, something I've always wanted to see and it didn't disappoint. I loved how they showed McNeil, Raley, Drew Smith too despite being hurt. Also, and you guys know I'm a big fan.....the round of applause Jeremy Hefner got was noticeable. People agree.

I can not explain how impactfull it was for Alonso to hit the HR in the 2nd, it absolutely set off not just the fans but the Mets players in the dug out too. It also immediately affected the Phillies composure, they made a lot of errors in the field after that.

Manaea was fkn dialed in man, his arm angle was the talk of the town. Cool moment was well before the introductions/game, when he came out to warm up in the bullpen.... he gave the entire right side of the stadium a few fist pumps and took off his hat as he jogged by. We absolutely went bezerk.

if you didn't know, Lindor's walk up song is "my girl" by the temptations and it has become a new sing along chant across the stadium, so learn the lyrics. As well as Jose Jose Jose but now for Inglesias.

If you haven't seen the tyrone Taylor throw to gun down Alec Bohm you need to, he barehands it off the wall and throws a dart to Lindor who is perfectly positioned to effortlessly make the tag

Rhys Stanek has won this crowd over, we treated him like a closer. He is so jacked up, runs hard out to the mound when he gets called in. His emotion at the end was pure fury.

Citified has a really fun way to hype the crowd when a pitcher exits from the opposing team, whole stadium goes dark and purple lights come on, you get a dramatic loud rift across the speakers and the jumbo tron shows the 7 train arriving to pick you up, the message conveyed is "time to go bro", everyone puts their cellphone up with the light on. Really wild vibe.

Last, the pregame party with the 7 line dancers, Mr. Mrs Met and decent DJ was fun but the post game party was wild.

So many other cool parts to share. If you can get there tonight its absolutely worth it

I know Nola
pjcas18 : 10/9/2024 10:21 am : link
is not having the year he did in 2022 and really hasn't been that pitcher since even though this year he was pretty good, but to win the Wheeler and Nola games is not what I would have expected.

but because the Mets did, they have a shot to close it out before Wheeler can take the mound again. I hope they do.
Wheeler
DanMetroMan : 10/9/2024 10:23 am : link
looked absolutely dominant (like you'd expect a true ace to look). Nola is obviously very good (would gladly take him on the Mets) but Wheeler is next level. Can't think of many (if any) starts where a starter looked more impressive vs. the Mets this season.
Raidel Martinez
DanMetroMan : 10/9/2024 10:25 am : link
staying in Japan, I had my eyes on him for the Mets this off-season. 1.09 era this season out of the bullpen.
LAD strength is basically the 3 guys
Eric on Li : 10/9/2024 10:25 am : link
who are as good as any 3 in a batting order can be when healthy but with freeman not performing they lose a lot.

their bullpen has been under invested all season. still cant believe they didnt sign hader.

padres are a great team. selfishly rooting for them so i can get to a game. very good team though, very similar to mets just a better bp thanks to preller's aggressive deadline and maybe slightly less power, slightly less defense. arraez bad enough they moved him to 1b, cronenworth also rates poorly at 2b, machado's numbers have regressed at 3b too. would be a great series.

mets sp may have a slight edge with shiny ears needing tjs.

Suarez remains the starter but Wheeler is available out of the bullpen.

DanMetroMan : 10/9/2024 10:30 am : link
NEW YORK — Rob Thomson was asked after a 7-2 Game 3 loss if Zack Wheeler could be available out of the bullpen for the Phillies in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Mets.

His response was a rather obvious one considering the Phillies are facing elimination, but interesting nonetheless.

"I think everybody is available tomorrow," Thomson said.

During Monday's workout day media session, Thomson was asked whether the Phillies would stick with Ranger Suárez — who had a 5.65 ERA after the All-Star Break — as their starting pitcher for Game 4, regardless of Game 3's outcome. He said they would. That's not a legally binding answer, but there's no indication from the manager that having Wheeler start on three day's rest, after throwing 111 pitches in Game 1, is a consideration.

However, it's possible a situation could arise where the Phillies would want to use Wheeler for an inning out of the bullpen. Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm, Carlos Estévez, Orion Kerkering, José Ruiz and José Alvarado have all struggled at times during this NLDS.

by the old definition wheeler is really the last ace in the NL. sale the only other if he'd have stayed healthy and were still in. skenes too but obviously didnt make playoffs.

the FG cy points looks weighted similar to the gut level impression, the mets faced 2 of the top 10 with PHI and would do so again with SD, but obviously nobody on level of wheeler. none on LAD. Sanchez (and nola for that matter) are good but nowhere near wheeler. the mets starters are on their level.

Admittedly I didn't follow the Brewers bullpen too closely this season so I was confused as to how a guy who looked as impressive as Nick Mears posted an era near 6....poor guy had a .360 BABIP, 3.39 FIP. It wouldn't surprise me to see him close for MIL at some point. His Savant page is a sea of red. They got him from Colorado for "nothing".

still hit bombs but k-rate spiked to 28% and only hit .240 with a .284 obp so a 744 ops/85 rc.

mets dont have anyone comparable to him at AAA so not sure what that return could have been but id have been aggressive with a package of stuff. FG has him 12th in the Miami org at 40+ grade. Baro and Vargas are both graded comparably in met system, wouldn't have been happy to give either one up but where we are now id have gladly done it.

having said that if we get by PHI, at least SDP is a very right handed lineup so not having a tough lefty is less of an issue. and i guess DP is an option for that role if they need him these next 2 games.

based on stearns performance here and how milwaukee has operated for years presumably with his same principles, he definitely seems to know what to look for under the hood to find underrated pitchers. getting maton/stanek for nothing in a hot deadline marketplace then seeing them adjust so well is pretty remarkable.

Pipeline has him #4 in Miami's system and the #9 1b prospect in baseball FWIW

"With raw power and exit velocities that rank among the best in the Minors, De Los Santos offers huge power potential thanks to his bat speed and strength but won't come close to fully tapping into it unless he can tone down his approach. Arizona tried to simplify his load and give him more time to make better swing decisions, yet despite his improved performance, he still chased way too many pitches and produced too many ground balls. Even with his flaws, he led the Minors in homers (28), total bases (217) and RBIs (84) at the time of the trade.

De Los Santos played mostly third base in his first three pro seasons but lacks the tools to stay there. With below-average speed and quickness, average arm strength and a history of erratic play at the hot corner, he'll likely wind up at first base. He has spent the majority of his time at first in 2024, but Miami's current roster construction may mean his first big league opportunity comes at third."

Full list of RPers added before the deadline moves

Yohan Ramirez, Michael Tonkin, Jorge Lopez, Cole Sulser, Max Kranick, Kyle Crick, Austin Adams, Adam Ottavino, Yacksel Rios, Adrian Houser, Cam Robinson, Chad Smith, Jake Diekman, Danny Young, Matt Festa, Ty Adcock, Shintaro Fujinami, Andre Scrubb

I'd argue considering Stearns reputation, the returns were overall pretty crappy. No real diamonds in the rough types and even Brazoban/Zuber (attempted by low types) have been poor. Again, I'm not crapping on David Stearns, rather I'm saying finding good RP is easier said than done and I would hope they spend a little more (money/talent) on some actual "good" RP's in the off-season

having said that if we get by PHI, at least SDP is a very right handed lineup so not having a tough lefty is less of an issue. and i guess DP is an option for that role if they need him these next 2 games.

He has spent the majority of his time at first in 2024, but Miami's current roster construction may mean his first big league opportunity comes at third."

seems like an overrate based on a good half season. he was still a returned rule v 6 months ago for a reason.

first base only with big swing/miss and low walk rate is about as difficult of a profile as a player can have to outperform. its age 21/22 vientos but a walk rate lower than half and having had worse age 19/20 seasons that got him rule v'd. dont totally remember where we had vientos ranking in the org those years (back half top 10?) but im pretty sure he wasn't on any top 10 or top 100 lists.

I'd argue considering Stearns reputation, the returns were overall pretty crappy. No real diamonds in the rough types and even Brazoban/Zuber (attempted by low types) have been poor. Again, I'm not crapping on David Stearns, rather I'm saying finding good RP is easier said than done and I would hope they spend a little more (money/talent) on some actual "good" RP's in the off-season

totally agree with the bold. the only curve id grade stearns on that helps him somewhat is that i dont think there were very many "good" ones to come out of last year's FA class they could have paid for. the hicks/lopez deals obviously look really good but as sp. martinez mostly started too.

-The Mets have a record of 13-2 in their last 15 home games, including yesterday’s victory. If they win again today, the Mets will advance to the NLCS for the first time in nine years and they’d also be the first Mets team to clinch anything at Citi Field since it opened back in 2009. They would play the winner of the Dodgers-Padres series (the Padres are up 2 games to 1 with the next game in San Diego tonight). Games 1 & 2 of the NLCS would be in California one way or the other if the Mets advance. Any way you slice it, the NLCS is scheduled to start on Sunday. Let’s hope the Mets punch their ticket to it tonight and send the Phillies home, thereby avoiding a 5th game and gaining some much-needed rest for their pitching staff.

most of the bigger contracts for RPers went to RPers who started or mostly started. Hicks, Lopez, Martinez and some to players who either got hurt or were signed knowing they were hurt (Hendriks/Stephenson). It's not as if smaller contracts/trades/signings above complete fliers didn't work out for teams. Heck, even Justin Slaten who they oddly picked rule 5 and then traded.

They reportedly TRIED to sign Chapman, but then didn't sign anybody anywhere near his ilk when he picked Pittsburgh. Junis (another guy being discussed in connection with them) signed for 1 year 7, pitched 67 innings 2.69 era. Kirby Yates was an absolute monster and signed for 4.5 per. There is a mid-tier below "top" names and some of what they brought in. Guys like Yimi Garcia who I mentioned above)
Lucas

Erceg another example of the type of arm I hope they look at (he himself, obviously not available) even if it costs them some minor league talent. Erceg 61.2 innings 2.53 FIP 10.5 k/9, 1.17 FIP post trade.

interesting i didnt remember him ranking that well recently. i do think that's probably close to where de los santos' best case value was, but having seen how much criticism vientos got even as he was consistently one of the best power hitters in AAA i can only imagine how his prospect status from there would have been viewed if he'd ever posted a AAA stretch with a rc at 85. seidler types have been calling him a fatally flawed non-prospect for like 2 years. i literally argued it directly with seidler as recently march right before the JDM signing lol.

i think the move is to go for scott on a 3 year x 40m or something like that.

diaz has shown this year they need a back up option at closer. having a lefty version of him is perfect.

where the brazoban and maton pickups are great is that they have some cost certainty for next year. garrett, butto, and hopefully nunez help with that too. possibly 1 of the youngs as well?

so unlike prior years they dont need 2 or 3 additions to the pen, i think they need 1 high end addition. id pick the lefty who throws almost 100 mph with a wipe out slider and a 52% ground ball rate. i just hope his 0 era in the postseason doesn't add another selling point to this list if we end up facing them next series.

I'd

FWIW I haven't been told that Nunez needed TJ, rather "he won't be back any time soon". Now that may well have meant just 2024 but the fact he had a PRP injection, then was ruled out for the playoffs (almost a month ago) leads me to believe it's not great.

Mendoza also emphasized that he looks at pitch movement and velocity and is absolutely right to focus on those process statistics. Thirty-one pitches can be enough to give us this kind of window into how Senga is feeling. That’s just about enough of a sample to start getting information on aspects like velocity, movement and spin — things that pitchers tend to repeat well once they establish a baseline. Even just one start tells us a lot about a pitcher returning from injury — 68 percent of all starts after a return from the injured list are within 0.8 mph of the fastball velocity the starter shows in their first start back.

So that’s the bad news for Senga. In his first start back after calf and triceps problems, he showed the third-worst fastball velocity of his career. At least he had decent ride (vertical movement), but by velocity it wasn’t a good game. And, as you can see from the whiff rates (the colors on the dots), he generally gets a lot more whiffs when he throws harder — a global trend that remains true for Senga in particular.

This is about winning not revenge and being cognizant that Game 5 still looms. If you can avoid pitching Diaz more than 1 inning today that would be ideal, but not at expense of blowing this game.
Peterson's a better pitcher than Diaz and is used to going multiple

I think Diaz is most effective with consecutive appearances. He loses it a little after time off therefore he needs a 6-10 pitches to find it.

As soon as he got wired up and started hitting the zone with the fast ball his slider came naturally.

Diaz needs to be used as much as possible.

We are so close.

Up and thinking how crazy it is the Mets are in the NLCS this year. I had faith that we finally had all the right people in charge but this is still a great surprise. When you think about it though we had the great team in 22 so we did have a core in place that we're knew could produce results but obviously Stearns knew how to round it out a ton better than inepptler.

Also our change to series threads was the real catalyst to the Mets turn around lol!!

Piazza, Beltran, as great as they were, I think mentally for me will always be just a little behind a homegrown player like Strawberry or Wright. If they (Piazza or Beltran) had won a WS it may be different.

Piazza's HR after 9-11 is one of the best moments in any sport at any time for me outside of Miracle on Ice (but I was little for Miracle on Ice).

Wright is a lot like Lindor to me, and hearing them say last night that Lindor needs to stretch/prep for 40 minutes before every game just to take the field made me very worried for his future. I know they say it's back spasms right now, but I also know it didn't start with spinal stenosis for Wright. Reyes is always going to be tainted for now because he's a piece of shit. I do profess to separate on-field and off-field and I do, if Reyes could perform and he was legally allowed to I'd welcome him on my team, but doesn't mean he gets a spot in my pantheon of players.

Anyway, I'm just enjoying this ride. I was very critical of the start to the season, but I was one of the few of us who did actually bet the over on the win total, lol and a WS win definitely can change how I think of a player and where they go on my personal Mets Mt. Rushmore.

good topic though.

2024 MLB Postseason Snapshot and Schedule as of now - ( New Window )
Just to put perspective
pjcas18 : 10/10/2024 9:30 am : link
on just how bad the Mets first two months were.

I saw a stat last night from June 1 to the end of the season the Mets were the best team in baseball. Over the final 4 months of a 6 month season they were #1. They still needed to win a game on the last day of the season just to qualify for the wild card.

The Mets were at 24-33 .421 on May 31st. Closer to last place in the NL than to the last wild card spot. 4.5 games out of a WC spot with 8 teams to pass to make it.

Let hope they keep it going and make this season into a Disney movie.

I will say this, the Stanek/Garret we are seeing now were not the players we saw 4 weeks ago. However I stand by my statement before...

Garret was overworked and needed a rest from high leverage and Stanek was working on pitches like a slider/sweeper so he seemed less effective.

But now it's time to do what you do best and he's throwing HEAT and Garret is back to using his nasty curve.

I think this is a strategy Hefner has had all season which makes sense for development purposes ..... but now we are here and everyone is using their A+ stuff and look a lot better. Same with the SP's
I mentioned this before
pjcas18 : 10/10/2024 10:09 am : link
the thing about Stanek and Maton to a lesser extent is both have pitched in the post-season and the World Series.

Stanek has a ring. I don't think that experience can be over-stated. We have seen players wilt with jitters under the intense playoff spotlight so many times. Having someone reliable is invaluable.

by the numbers he's the best met position player because he did more as a met than strawberry, piazza, beltran, lindor (so far) being homegrown. had he not gotten injured or had he led them to closing the deal in 2015, i think he's got a pretty ironclad argument. obviously he had the extreme misfortune of the wilponzis slash/burn.

that said i dont think any of them ever hit the highs that piazza hit as a true MVP candidate who carried them on a multi-season postseason run that got to a WS (and 100% yes 9/11 homer too was just as big). until lindor this last week.

2 more prime years and lindor is 2nd on the mets all time war list to wright but in 600+ fewer games as a met, and with a somewhat reasonable chance to catch him.

Eppler seemingly was an excellent recruiter. So much so i wonder if the Mets would have gotten at least a cursory look from Ohtani last offseason and maybe even a better shot at Yamamoto.

Obviously doesn't matter given where we've ended up, though that possibly decides the next series one way or the other lol.

Tough call....I think the Padres are deeper all the way around, line-up 1-9, starting pitching, BP, etc.

I also think they lead the league in unlikeable characters, though J. Winker helps the Mets in that category.

But, the Dodgers have Ohtani and Betts and a hobbled Freeman.

Their pitching staff is a mess, but a two days off will help them...glad LA won last night which means a game 5 Friday, two days before the NLCS begins

Tough call, but I think I'd rather face Los Angeles.

The Padres scare me; Darvish (who owns the Mets) Cease, King plus Tatis, Machado, etc...

What should be apparent by now, is that the WC bias by Japanese players is very hard to overcome (Murakami has publicly said he intends to sign with a west coast team or... the Yankees). Obviously, there are some outliers but it's very much real. That being said, when it comes to FA, some are simply better "recruiters" than others and Eppler seemed to be good at that part of the job.

I do think the Mets bring in a GM this off-season (that's not to say Stearns is or isn't a good recruiter, hard to even tell at this point, as the Brewers didn't spend on FA's and the Mets didn't chase big FA this off-season)

i get sending him to AFL to play on Friday but having him play b2b on saturday too seems a little unnecessary unless they arent going to start him on sunday.

iglesias has struggled and had some really bad at bats yesterday. mcneil starting against righties could be a big add. Yu and 1 of Flaherty/Yamamoto are likely starting for SD/LA on Friday.

probably lines up king for game 1 if Padres advance.
or the other of Flaherty/Yamamoto for LAD if they advance.

lifetime mcneil is:
3/6 vs king
1/3 vs flaherty
0/3 vs yamamoto

iglesias 0/5 vs flaherty, 1/4 vs king, hasnt faced yamamoto.

iglesias hit .402 with a 184 rc vs lefties on the year. .301 with a 112 rc vs righties. for his career he's an 83 rc vs righties, 110 vs lefties. he's had a magical season but may be best served platooned vs lefties.
It's fine to play him B2B IMO

He needs the extra ABs more than he needs rest. He hasn't played in over a month. During the regular season, these guys often play 10+ days in a row, so I'm not worried about fatigue. Want to get him into game shape. The flight from AZ to LAD or SD isn't that bad either.

I agree that having him as an option vs RHP could be a really big help. Not sure Mendoza will sit Iglesias though.

Only Lindor had a higher OPS, he was 3rd on the team in OBP, 3rd in average, 2nd in slugging, 2nd in wRC+, 3rd best k%, 2nd in ISO

best 10 days that I've ever had as a Mets fan.

I wrote this team off in May.

I wrote this team off after losing two of three to the Athletics at home in August.

I thought it was over in August after losing on a Sunday to San Diego and Diaz blowing a save against the Diamondbacks.

I thought it was over after losing the first two games to the Brewers in the regular season series.

I thought it was over after Butto let off those two home runs in Game 3 of the Wildcare series.

I'm blown away by the resiliency and toughness of this team. LGM!

If Peterson falters in-game that badly then you're probably not going to bring in your last reliever, and if you are it's likely in a mop up role (which he's not capable of). He hasn't pitched in over 2 weeks.
i think young for PHI made sense if lefties were up in 4th/5th
Eric on Li : 10/10/2024 11:53 am : link
and you had a starter leave early and needed innings with peterson unavailable.

he could make sense for same reason vs LAD with ohtani/freeman/muncy.

vs SD i dont see much point. you'd rather have a lefty for Merill but that's pretty much it.

neither otto / young have been needed much so with more rest i could see an argument for keeping acuna and dropping 1 of them.

they should have pinch run for JDM yesterday when he was the tying run, i think the only reason they didnt was bc it was 6th inning and they didnt want to lose his bat, but if you have mcneil and an extra bat you are able to do that. would have at least still had iglesias or mcneil on the bench.

i think id rather have the extra pinch runner than an extra pitcher who is only pitching in a blowout anyway.

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold held a press conference today on the heels of the club being eliminated from the playoffs last week. Arguably the most notable thing he said was in relation to closer Devin Williams. “We have to stay open-minded,” Arnold said, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com on X. “We’re the smallest market in the league, so that’s something that’s required in this.”

probably should trade Williams. They know how to build a bullpen (again, I think Means could be a very good closer, Ashby looked good out of the pen etc) and 1 year 10.5 million, Williams will have plenty of interest. "Most" teams can afford him. I could see both the Phillies and Braves interested. Though, I fully expect the Braves to make their usual lopsided trade with the A's... Mason Miller.

They should definitely trade Williams. You think they'd get more in the offseason or at the deadline? You'd expect more in the offseason (acquiring team gets him for full season) but RP market at the deadline can heat up, especially for an elite arm, and they'd even get to use him for MIL's first 80+ games which would help them get back to the playoffs.

Full-season AND the ability to offer him a QO. Arnold was also there when they traded Hader in season and it crushed morale (even Stearns touched on this). I expect Williams to be traded and for a nice return.

Lots of owners say they want to win, but only at their price. You look at the things he's done, even besides the contracts:

Agreed and adding a couple of thoughts. I was actually getting a little nervous early this season that Cohen may get frustrated and take his profit and sell this team. This run has allayed those fears, which were completely my own 50 years as a Met fan paranoia. He seems to be enjoying this as much as we are.

Second thought is that while every MLB owner is very, very rich, many have much of their net worth tied up in the ballclub. Similar to the Duttons of Yellowstone - land rich and cash poor. They then rely on the ballclub profits to fund their lifestyle. Cohen doesn't have that problem at all obviously. Much to the Mets and our benefit as fans.

You can do it horizontally (although the current technology has an MOE of 1"). The real problem is vertically because hitters do not have the same exact stance from pitch to pitch. You can program in the averages of the last X number of pitches faced to get an estimate of the top and bottom of the zone, but there is no guarantee that on any given pitch that that will be the exact boundaries of the strike zone.

It surprises me too because you would think Peterson would follow Senga in any game that Senga starts, and Peterson would be pitching on three days' rest if he goes in Game 1. If it were me, I'd start Manaea in Game 1 and go Senga in Game 2 to give Peterson the extra day of rest so he can pitch into the later innings if necessary.

think the primary motivations were preferences for games 5(senga)/6(severino)/7(manaea) and getting Peterson back available in the pen asap. by game 3 DP will be on 3 days rest, game 4 he'll be on 4 days rest. they will have megill as an alternative piggy back option off senga for game 5, and with being able to pitch more they wont need as much length from a piggy-backer, so by at least game 3 the BP is stronger by having DP likely available.

fringe benefit is more games for senga stretches him out quicker if the series doesnt go full distance. probably 40-60 pitches game 1, 70-80 in game 5. closer to normal if they advance.
G1 SP
GF1080 : 10/11/2024 12:56 pm : link
I think it makes sense Senga game 1 as you can stretch him out in case we keep going. Megill can piggyback off Senga and that gives DP more rest. Megill coming in as a piggyback knowing Senga will go 3 maybe 4 innings is better than him not knowing his role. And not that G1 isn't important but if we can sneak a W in with the Senga/Megill combo it makes it look that much better when and if Senga has a to go a 2nd game in the series.
It also interesting on what the opponent will have to do

Optimus-NY : 10/11/2024 11:59 pm : link
Revenge for 1988. Better matchup for the Mets. The Padres would've been a tougher test due to their bullpen. Better overall roster than the Dodgers. Mets' LHPs matchup better against the Dodgers' lefty hitters. Quintana, Manaea, and Peterson will earn their money this coming series. I'd replace Otto with a second lefty in the pen, in Lucchesi. McNeil will prolly be on the NLCS roster too in place of Acuna IMO. We'll find out Sunday morning NY time.

holding manaea for game 3 was the 1 thing i didnt like about the initially reported schedule so i like this a lot.

excited to see mcneil back in action too, he's never faced Flaherty but id start him over iglesias since he's struggled and hope to catch lightning in bottle. winker looks like he should hit 5th behind alonso.

Citi Field finally has an identity. They are reaching out to the fans and making it a mets home field, not just a billboard for corporate sponsors.

Are you (or anyone) able to elaborate on this? Wasn't able to get to Citi this field with an under 1 year old at home, so didn't see any changes that took place this season

Hardly comprehensive, but they put the Hall of Fame plaques in the rotunda now. The Seaver statue is not new, was dedicated in 2022, but that went a long way toward changing the mood.
The food and drink options are fantastic, and a lot of them are local brands. I think it's been voted best ballpark food in MLB for two years now.

In the Delta club, it's been dressed up with Mets-centric visuals. There's a David Wright collage in there that kinda reminds me of the neon silhouettes that were on the exterior of Shea.

The team store is like three times what it used to be.

The stadium lightning has been upgraded so you can see the blue and orange LED lights. Everything is more visually 'Mets' overall, which I appreciate.

I don't remember ever having fireworks for Wilpon-era postseason wins, but we had them after clinching the NLDS.

Some people don't like the dance team, but I think it's fun.

The Mets aren't supposed to be the Giants or the Yankees coat and tie aesthetic. There should be a sense of fun around this franchise. They really lean into the Mets culture. Mr. Met is all over the pace. And of course, Cohen has done a fantastic job bringing back former players and allowing them to be part of it. That didn't happen with the last owners. They were almost ashamed of the 86 team.

the last ownership was cheap, shameless, and stupid

There are not enough bad words in the English language to describe previous ownership and his weasel son. Made me sick seeing him in his suite the other night.

G1: Jack Flaherty
G2: Walker Buehler
G3: bullpen
G4: Yoshinobu Yamamoto

G6: Buehler
G7: bullpen

Yamamoto was expected to remain on five days' rest, but Flaherty can come back for Game 5 if he's on normal rest.

DMM knows more than me, but I could have scouted Jackson Holliday. He was the #1 overall pick and likely would have been for whoever had the #1 pick. Kjerstad has been a disappointment IMO, after being a highly ranked prospect. Had a mid rookie season at 25, is 26 before next spring training.

Creed Willems could pan out, and I don't know a ton about him, but his profile seems also mid.

hope it works out and this scout is lights out with the Mets but I'm not impressed by that track record that was shared for those 3 players specifically.
Fred by himself had a very good reputation

i thought his doubleday doublecross was messed up but I knew some people who knew him a long time and were loyal to him.

NOBODY had anything close to a good thing to say about jeff including all of those same people that deeply respected Fred. if it werent for jeff einhorn would have owned the team a decade ago and we may have been out of the madoff tailspin a lot sooner. his own family members leaking against him during the cohen purchase process was not surprising.
Generally
DanMetroMan : 10/12/2024 4:03 pm : link
speaking, scouts given "credit" for highly regarded/drafted prospects is just a way to fluff up otherwise "boring" news. I can't say I recognize this guys name, he may well be a good scout (comes from a good organization when it comes to players like Holliday etc, the scouts are one of multiple in an organization with eyes on them, and at best cultivate relationships. I suspect the Mets bring in multiple new scouts and some will be credited with xyz and others not credited for much at all and neither will mean much

the best was when a-rod/j-lo gave him the bs that they'd let him do that as part of their offer. the doubleday quotes re jeff were 100% prophetic.
It’s funny how quickly rich people give up anything/everything
CooperDash : 10/12/2024 4:24 pm : link
they cherish when faced with having to give up their lifestyle. The Wilpons’ ass was in the jackpot and fortunately for Mets fans, Cohen was waiting in the wings to scoop up the team. Best thing to ever happen to the Mets.

Fred was the Mets owner that desperately wanted to be the Dodgers owner. And it showed - very publicly. Disgusting owner. Disgusting person.

And the Jackie Robinson Rotunda (shrine). And his obsession with Sandy Koufax and inviting him to spring training each year.

While ignoring the history of his own team. Despicable.

nobody who knew him for decades was respecting him or not because of decor decisions at citifield. none of us would care about it if they won big either.

from what i know fred is/was a mostly decent guy who made some bad choices. jeff is/was a pos who was almost unanimously loathed. his next good choice may be his first.

a little surprised but it makes sense. there are good reasons both he/young haven't pitched, i expected them to take his experience over young's handedness but neither should matter all that much. neither should get into a game unless something has gone very wrong or very right.

Glad they kept Young. Keeps usage of Peterson fluid.

MLB should expand rosters at this round and world series

the 2 off days in between the road travel effectively solves that so honestly dont think it matters all that much. you are only running low on the replacement level pen arms if there are 2 blowouts, and in that case your best guys probably arent pitching too much so they are fine for game 3+ and probably pitching no matter what since you are probably down 0-2.

if they had to throw each of young / megill / butto until their arms fell off in games 1 or 2, any players that throw way beyond their norms in a game because of situational need there will be some kind of real strain be it "tricep soreness" or "arm fatigue" or whatever they want to call it. so i think you could IL that player for Otto or Brazoban or Kranick or Luccessi without pulling an eppler.

obviously if they end up in a high BP usage situation due to SP getting actually injured and leaving early, then it would be that player going on the IL and more fresh arms available.

all in all the decision to keep someone like Acuna over an extra RP is a pretty easy one.

may want to put this in the top post of the new thread for LAD series.

pretty remarkable that other than brooks raley, drew smith, christian scott, and nunez the roster appears to be pretty much fully healthy when it matters most.

the position player depth in particular is exceptional. really fully loaded for any situation. they should go into every game with 2 of iglesias (R), mcneil (L), marte (R), winker (L), JDM (R) available off the bench as necessary to hit.

plus 2 of bader, taylor, acuna to pinch run or come in for defensive purposes.

as long as this team keeps grinding good at bats they are going to seriously test any opposing teams pitching depth.
