Welcome to this best-of-seven National League Championship Series thread between the 6th seeded Mets (89-73) & the 1st seeded N.L. West Champion Dodgers (98-64).
All games for this series will be covered in this thread. The Dodgers had the best record in all of MLB during the regular season & beat the Mets during the regular season 4 times,
winning the regular season series 4 games to 2. The Mets will be looking for some payback against the Dodgers the same way they did against the Brewers & Phillies, who they also lost their regular season series against. Click

The word wasn't used as a slight. These last 2 weeks have been nothing short of magical. 3 of the top what, 10-15 post season moments in Mets history have happened. Different guys stepping up and not relying solely on the stars.
Hoping for a big night from Alvarez to hopefully get him going
MLB Network @MLBNetwork - 10:05 AM · Oct 13, 2024 · 90K Views - ( New Window )
P.S. Jeff had better be healthy and they had better be adding him only if he's healthy. Don't need any legacy roster spots at this stage of the game.
that said lindor and alonso have done well against Treinan and Daniel Hudson. LAD had 5 relievers pitch 2+ times vs SD, they were 2 of them along with kopech (had 3), phillips, banda (not good splits vs righties). phillips wasnt so good against lefties, so in game like today's i cant imagine they want him in vs lindor/nimmo/winker.
over a 7 game series if they can make a few of these LAD relievers liabilities it will have a big impact. if they need to go to kopech every time the top of the order comes up that's going to be a heavy load for him to carry.
you will notice right away 5 of the top 10 are not available in this series. flaherty and yamamoto are the 2 starters who are carrying a ton of run prevention in their arms, whereas the mets have the load split among 5 different starters who each have pitches that are distinct weapons.
Treinan and Kopech are carrying a ton of weight in the LAD BP.
on the mets side you can see they didnt have the same kind of depth but their good health has them in better position. there have been a bunch of athletic articles on this but u can see how enormously sinker dependent they are too.
here's senga from last year, obviously if he is in form that's a big boost as well:
with the sinkers being so prominent among met pitchers, here's how LAD hitters fared against sinkers this year, dont think they should throw any to betts:
*Pay close attention to Winker's numbers against him.*
Jose Iglesias 0-5, K
Francisco Lindor 0-4, BB, K
Starling Marte 4-22, HR, BB, 7 K
J.D. Martinez 1-2, K
Tyrone Taylor 0-4, 2 K
Jesse Winker 8-21, 2 1B, 2 HR, 3 BB, 3 K
P.S. Jeff had better be healthy and they had better be adding him only if he's healthy. Don't need any legacy roster spots at this stage of the game.
I was surprised by that also, not sure that was a good idea.

McNeil provides the flexibility to play OF if Taylor can’t rebound although it impacts our defense. I think the feeling is if they got down to Lucchesi anyway they could use Young or Megill to fill innings.

Hey I'm pulling for the Mets to get to the WS. Plus I hate the Dodgers. I'd love to see a Subway Series.
Go Mets!
Lets get him out and see what this Dodgers bullpen's all about ....
Should get Jeff an at bat today. Maybe think about giving him an OF start?
Tough to come out and spot the other team 3 runs right out of the gate. Flaherty was on point all night but the Mets had a few times where they could have broke through, and just couldn’t get there.
Dodgers are playing loose and just getting the bat on the ball for hits. Might have been a different game if Senga wasn’t a complete disaster. I wonder how he looked warming up. Couldn’t have been good.
They definitely have the appearance of a switch being flipped once that happened.
That being said it's a 7 game series and the good news is I can't imagine the Mets playing worse than they did today.
We’ll be looking good if we can do that.

It's been mostly dodgers. Manaea breakers didn't really bend around most of the time.
If I’m the hitting coach I’m telling him he’s not allowed to swing at the first 2 pitches. I don’t care if they are right down the middle
Rough defense there.

it's like he doesn't have confidence for some reason. But his slider is less effective when he can't locate the FB, so I agree. Just go right after hitters with the heat.

MLB.com - Gameday Wrap
Yup. Mets have got them by the balls. The key will be Game 4 with Yamamoto going for L.A. IMO. Walker Buehler doesn't scare anyone anymore. He's pitching in Game 3 against Severino.
Ton of depth, and now down to Flaherty, Yamamoto, and Buehler (who has struggled)
The bottom of this lineup scares me. Any threat pretty much ends with Marte
Just like it was a huge win for Philly last series when Diaz threw 5 warm up pitches without coming in LOL
Obviously you don’t want to go back to LA but that’s probably a pipe dream.
Ton of depth, and now down to Flaherty, Yamamoto, and Buehler (who has struggled)
Ohtani is a little bit disingenuous to include since he tore is UCL in 2023 as a member of the Angels and was not expected to start for the Dodgers this year. So for 2024 he was never considered a pitcher when the Dodgers built their roster, but valid point otherwise.

Correct. He was never in the 2024 plans as a pitcher. The rest of them were, however
Obviously you don’t want to go back to LA but that’s probably a pipe dream.
That's the way I figure it. This was almost a must win for me. As you said, can't depend on a home sweep. Need to take 2 out of 3 at home and then win one in LA. A loss in game 2 almost makes a home sweep necessary
EXACTLY, and I think they will.

this is the exact recipe. 2/3 at home, 1/2 in LA.
saw someone else comment that it's now a 5 game series with the mets having homefield.
pretty remarkable they won today despite the messiness and the walks. tighten that stuff up and i like their chances in the series.
2. Announcers could not stop gushing of Dodgers and were already appealing to the fact they didn't have to use their primary bullpen high leverage guys. Can't wait for this shit to get back to NY.
3. Wonder if we see Nimmo take a couple days and let Bader/McNeil get some OF time. Maybe DH?
4. Diaz needs to just throw gas right out the gate, helps get him lined up faster
5. Marte is so under appreciated. not just for hitting but for his positioning in the outfield and being on top of all the fly balls. You can tell he keeps everyone stationed right. Glad he'll be here another year.
Feel good about Sevy and Q. Lets F Go Mets.
Just need to get Butto on that level.
Yeah, AL is weak this year. If the Yankees make it, the NL team certainly would have been more battle tested

I wanted Stanek in the offseason. Just sayin...(I'm good!)
Jett Williams 4/11, 1 2b, 2 3B's, 2 walks, 3 k's
Jacob Reimer 1/9, 4 walks, 1 K
Jonathan Pintaro 3 innings 4 hits 2 runs 1 walk 2 k's
Noah Hall 2.2 innings 3 hits 1 run 3 walks 1 k
Saul Garcia 2 innings 1 hit 0 runs 2 walks 2 k's
Jawilme Ramirez 0.2 innings 2 hits 1 run 0 walks 1 k
Dylan Ross 1 inning 4 hits 5 runs 0 walks 2 k's
But I do get a little nervous when I hear the Chris Sale comparisons with the pitching angle tweak as a long term pitching motion.

They could do Al Lang or Steinbrenner, but neither is prefect. It would also be a good opportunity to test-market some places. Or fuck it, just start building a new one ASAP.

I'm really curious what happens. They got their stadium deal but that's not even broken ground yet. There's nowhere in florida that can support them like a major league team except some weird time share with Miami or one of the college fields. Steinbrenner is really small.

There was a plan floated a couple years back for Tampa to play some of its games in Montreal but it got rejected.
I was amazed how many die hard Mariners fans I found out there too.
I'm sure Speedy can back me up
agreed. history vs buehler certainly favors winker too. id imagine they want to give JDM opportunities, but id have winker's bat in the lineup. maybe there's some recent trend that favors JDM but i like the idea of playing the guy who has the familiarity of 15 at bats (and 2 homers).
I agree. I don't like all this pandering to vested vets. Senga shat the bed (Peterson had better start in Game 5). JD has been cheeks. The only vet who might actually help now is McNeil ironically enough.

Yes!!! OMG, that would be so awesome - Portland would love it.

to Martinez’s. Winker almost always works a deep count and has hit the ball with some power. JD has gotten some hire but they’ve been ground balls that found the right spot. He’s shown no power and has often looked overmatched. Playing JD over Winker tomorrow feels like a big mistake.

I don’t think it is pandering. The real downside to someone like Winker is that he is a liability against lefties whereas Martinez has gotten some hits against righties. Martinez and Winker actually have comparable numbers this postseason. The only real differences are Winker has shown more power and Martinez has a higher BABIP. If you look at the reps Iglesias had as a 5th hitter, Mendoza prefers the approach that Kansas City had when they beat us using singles to get runners from first to third versus flyball hitters who may hit more HR, but often it is just a lazy pop out or soft fly to OF that doesn’t move anyone.

Winker should be in the lineup tonight against RHP Buehler. The only way I see JD playing tonight is if they sit down Nimmo in LF and have either McNeil or Winker playing there instead. I could see this against Buehler:
LF - McNeil (Nimmo takes a seat on the bench to rest and get left-handed hitting McNeil in the lineup)
CF - Taylor
RF - Winker (Marte takes a seat on the bench against another RHP to get left-handed hitting Winker in the lineup)
DH - Martinez
Winker's numbers in the same time period are almost identical, just with a homer and +2 walks added in. remember he too had a brutal Sept before this stretch.
so one of them is 4/14 the other 4/15, both have made consistently hard contact. which makes the question who is a better fit vs buehler's stuff (and his stuff has not been good this year, so it's posssible the answer is both). based on what i know i'd have winker - but it is also possible his back is still an issue and it helps to get him a day off. also possible JDM's hitting profile lines up well with buehler.
it's also possible they want to save Winker for a more important at bats later in the game too since the LAD BP is mostly RH. he has had an excellent eye at the plate so being able to drop him into a big situation lefty on right for iglesias or alvarez is still a preferable option to mcneil at the moment.

Have to imagine McNeil isn't 100% given his usage or lack thereof.
for all his struggles offensively iglesias has been very good defensively, his bobble in LA aside. so he has the higher floor from that.
i think mcneil will get chances and if nothing else is a nice bat of last resort to have on the bench for righty relievers. if iglesias has another 0-for i could see him getting a start, but i understand giving iglesias some rope for his defense.
he took the field in the AFL, i think it's less physically able and more not wanting to throw him into the frying pan of important games with rust from 6 weeks off since they have alternatives.

Cuban RHP Yoandri Gonzalez (19) has a deal with the New York Mets, per sources.
It will be official in the coming days.
He left Cuba in 2022 and now gets a chance with a 93-94 MPH fastball and solid slider.
Trained by Yoelny Vera at Fenix Academy (Elizan Gamez).
with wind chill it's supposed to be in the mid/upper 40's at 1st pitch.
I don't think it helps anyone, no one (IMO) likes playing baseball in the cold, but hopefully it hurts the Dodgers more.

I also wonder if cold weather could affect Yamamoto. Did he pitch in a lot of raucous, cold postseason environments before coming to MLB? I honestly have no idea.
Chilly conditions are nothing new for Ohtani. "
ty for linking. it still kind of boggles my mind a bit that people dont more plainly see the obvious with vientos, which is that he has a rare ability to hit the baseball very hard.
adding in better swing decisions is obviously more than a footnote and very deserving of analysis, it's a key, but the headline with vientos is and always has been the elite ev.
from 10/1 to today:
94.6 mph EV would tie for 4th best in MLB on the full season with Stanton, 1 place ahead of soto, 2 places behind ohtani (95.8)/judge (96.2).
the 50% hard hit rate would be 18th best, 1 spot ahead of yordan alvarez.
so yes, 100% some BABIP luck and the BA is way higher than the xba, but when you hit the ball as hard as he does in some ways you can make your own weather. the 1 or 2 infield singles he's gotten arent distorting much othe rthan the xba/ba.

Why are the Mets going so righty heavy tonight versus a pitcher who struggles so badly against LHP? Wasn't Winker acquired for this specific type of game? Why is McNeil even on the NLCS roster if not for this matchup? It's not like Iglesias has hit much at all during the playoffs. How many XBH does he have?

I think Carlos Mendoza really, really believes in Martinez as a player because he really, really believes in his players, especially his established veterans. It is also a bizarre decision to play him today given the matchup and his stated explanations of why just don't add up
@AnthonyDiComo
Walker Buehler's "fairly neutral" platoon splits factored into Carlos Mendoza's decision to start J.D. Martinez over Jesse Winker at DH today, the manager said.
"And J.D. is a really good hitter. He's a big reason why we're where we're at now. We're going to need him."
@timbhealey
Carlos Mendoza said Kodai Senga is scheduled to pitch Game 5.
“At what capacity, we’ll see,” he said.
So that might be as a reliever.
basically true.
he's got a 5 era this year and his velocity was lowest of his career. it trended down each month of the season too, though it popped up a drop for the start against SD.
i think it's perhaps arguable that there's not a big enough advantage vs buehler, that you wouldnt rather have Winker on the bench to deploy later in the game in a big moment. for example vs treinan:
Splits are linked below. Lefties have 5 more hits in 10 more AB's than Righties against him this year (the extra 5 are all doubles or triples). On the other hand, lefties are striking out at a higher rate than righties against him.

Bad defense all inning between Sevy and Alvarez. Yuck!
Sheesh

Obviously can’t ever assume a DP but you can argue there were 3 errors in that inning
Not stoked about that.
Not stoked about that.
I mean...Sevy made the pitches after to get out of it.
Looking tough.
Alvarez will be fine, but he's struggling now. I'd seriously consider giving Torrens the start tomorrow
NLCS strangely feeling less intense than NLDS.
Is it lack of rivalry? Playing with house money? Lower expectations to win? Idk
Well...he was right
Back to back leadoff walks
Double killer
Somehow got out of that mess unscathed
He got screwed on the check swing on that one. I didn't think he went and would have at least been 3-0.
Hes done. But their pen is excellent, so not a plus.
You gotta sign up for 2 runs allowed through 5
Should win every game that we get that. Need the bats to come through

not getting at least 1 when bases were jacked is what I think all bothers us.
Not our night so far
And of course, Ohtani now. Oh well, onto the next game. Maybe the offense will show up.
kike homer was only out in 5/30 ballparks, and mets had a few flyballs that would have been out in a small minority of parks too. dodgers had a lot of good positioning for hard hit balls.
bottom line have to get big hits when guys are on base and make outs when you get the chance. cant give good teams extra outs and cant let struggling pitchers off the hook. yamamoto has reverse splits so im not as sure id put mcneil in as winker. with sloppy defense being an issue im not sure id swap mcneil in for iglesias.
Im with you Eric
One day at a time. Win tomorrow (err..today I guess)
Taylor is far from a black hole, he might not get the hit but he battles, pretty sure he averages 8 pitches per at bat.
JD lost me wit that 3rd at bat and chased that outside changeup.
I expect we see Winker in the lineup tonight, Alvarez gets one more shot....he needs to clean it up man.
However, Winker needs to be in the lineup and I'm officially worried about Nimmo. His ABs seemed unaffected by the injury until last night, but now it seems to be affecting him in the box.
This series has been about our staff issuing walks, shoddy defense and the fact that we've scored runs in only 3 of 27 innings played.
I'm not ready to say anything is over at this point. Come back tonight and even this up. Dodgers are a bully team and don't look nearly as good when they're backed into a corner.
even the whipping boys, JDM had 2 walks yesterday. taylor had 1. iglesias had a hit and 0 k's so he put the ball in play all 4 at bats.
the big hit with men on eluded them, and they had the 3 defensive plays that led to runs. severinos 2 balls he couldnt field cleanly and alvarez bad throw to 2nd. that was the difference through most of the game. the kike 2 out homer only barely got out and in 25 ballparks that's an out.
in a tighter game megill isn't pitching for that 8th inning blowup.
the dodgers are definitely a bully team and the variable with them is their pitching. when they get good pitching and a lead they can ride high. they are mixing up their relievers so much that our hitters are battling but off balance. mets need to get to yamamoto.

Agreed.
And how ironic that the Mets are going to battle Yamamoto at home to keep their season from being pushed to the brink after the FA courtship this past offseason.
If you're going to dance with the one who brung ya and leave Iglesias and Alvarez in the lineup, I can understand it. Especially with Alvarez being a winning player throughout the season and handling the staff the way he does -- I just wish he would try to hit a single not a 10 run homer!
Lastly, I do not care about Yamamoto's reverse splits enough to run JDM out there again tonight. He has no pop and looks washed. Gotta get Winker some AB's tonight.
Just saw this stat somewhere - in his career buehler has thrown 4 sweepers that moved with more than 20 inches of horizontal break. All 4 were yesterday. I think 2 were to Jdm on that at bat he struck out with full count. If the other guys pitch their best I’m not sure what else you can do but tip the cap. And hope that they can’t all do that in every inning. And that our guys can pitch their best too.
Postseason numbers:
Jdm 4/16, 3 rbis, 4 walks
Winker 4/15, 3 rbis, 4 walks
Phuuuuuq.
Winker needs ot be in the lineup tonight and JDM needs to sit. Alvarez better wake the hell up too.

It would show me the "magic" is still there and they have the bats going.
If they don't win tonight I think its pretty obvious that it's over.

I still believe, but I'd be lying if I said my mind is not starting to overtake my heart in terms of what I think is going to happen when I'm watching these 2 teams. BUT, it's still just 2-1, and this version of the Mets deserves every benefit of the doubt here.
I was telling my uncle earlier that you take in a team like these Mets as you would a pet or a new friend. I'm too young to remember the Mets championship teams so over the course of the last month, these guys have probably given me the greatest stretch and some of the best Mets wins in my lifetime. You add that to how hard it is to get to this point and beyond and you just don't want to see this thing end.
There is something ironic about these Mets facing the high-priced Yamamoto who turned us down in this game tonight. I feel the universe is lining us up for a big night.
Let's hope so and let's go Mets!

-Robin Venture is throwing out the first pitch tonight to Edgardo Alfonzo. Jose Quintana has yet to win a postseason game in his career, yet owns a 2.43 ERA & 0.944 WHIP over 29 & 2/3 postseason innings. Mookie Betts is 8-for-28 in his career against Quintana, while Freddie Freeman is 5-for-16 with a homer against him. Yamamoto got battered for five runs on five hits in just three innings with only one strikeout in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Padres in what was his first postseason start in MLB. He bounced back in Game 5 of the series though with five shutout innings, earning the win as the Dodgers advanced in that elimination game. The Mets faced Yamamoto once this season. It was at Dodger Stadium on April 19th, jumping on him for four runs (three earned) & seven hits over six innings. Harrison Bader went 3-for-3 with an RBI against him that night. maybe for morale, but I think tomorrow remains the must win.
Although not ideal to go back to LA, we would get to see Buehler and Flaherty again and this time no surprises. I think we would smoke them both.
This lineup is a quick learner and adapts well.

Can't win 0-0
Offense is going to have to win this game no matter what

Mets killer
Saw a few sliders that were in the bottom of the zone he called a ball.
Mets hanging by a thread here. Need a rally this inning badly.
Can't miss that mistake.
That's what's changed about this team in last few days. Just not capitalizing in the big moments
All that said...awesome job by Brandon to beat that out.
I’d yank Quintana now.
Loved this team. Everyone had a moment.
Will cherish this run forever.
Thank you Mets.
Perfect recipe for how the Mets are shitting the bed.

I love this attitude. I had little expectation for this season, and the Mets have had a terrific run. I'm not throwing in the towel until the Dodgers get that 27th out in a deciding game, but assuming the Mets don't make a ridiculous rally, 3 wins in a row against this Dodgers team seems like a near impossible task.
I for one wouldn't mind seeing them let Pete go, sadly, put the QO on him, of course. I don't think he has responded well to big moments consistently enough to justify a big contract. Just a .762 OPS with RISP and with men on base it's just .732 OPS.
Not sure I would move Vientos over there at this point. But it's not a great free agent class at 1B, I suppose you could consider Bellinger.
But with Mauricio and Baty as potential options at 3B, maybe just do the damn thing and move Vientos to 1B after all?
Perfect recipe for how the Mets are shitting the bed.
Nibbling too much away and seems afraid to throw strikes inside to this Dodgers lineup.
Uncle Steve, back up the truck for Soto, please.
Don't like the move. Carlos said before the game that Alvy would come through. He should have given him the chance.
But this team lacks a “scary” hitter. You need one to go the distance. Admirable what the Mets have done this season, the Cohen needs to make a splash. And Alonso can take a hike.
I’d save manaea, throw Peterson and empty the pen. Hope the bats bounce back and flaherty just doesn’t have it. Having manaea in game 6 is a sliver of hope you can get to game 7.
