Giants-Bengals pregame thoughts:
• This is a chance for the Giants to make a statement. The Bengals are 1-4, but if their defense (which is getting healthier up front) can provide *any* resistance, they're still a formidable team. Plus, they're desperate. The Giants will be getting Cincy's best shot. A win would get the Giants to .500 heading into the Saquon Bowl, and then things could really take off.
• Daniel Jones' prime-time struggles are well-documented. His home struggles have slipped under the radar a bit. The Giants are 0-2 this season and the offense hasn't scored a TD in Jones' last four home starts (dating back to the 2022 season). Big chance to exorcise some demons tonight.
• Would be big for the Giants to jump on the Bengals early. Cincinnati's defense had the dreaded players-only meeting this week. A quick score or two could break their spirit.
• The Giants rank 26th in red zone TD percentage. They need to finish drives with touchdowns tonight. The Bengals have the 31st ranked third-down defense. The Giants are middle of the pack in third-down offense, but they're seventh in plays per drive. They'll take points however they can get them, but would be beneficial to have some sustained drives to keep Joe Burrow & Co. on the sideline.
• Obviously, Tyrone Tracy will be the work horse, but I expect to see Jones use his legs more again tonight. Also think you'll see some jet seeps incorporated.
• Trey Hendrickson essentially is the Bengals' pass rush. He has three sacks and 22 pressures; no other Bengal has more than one sack and 10 pressures. Hendrickson is the rare edge rusher who lines up exclusively one on side. So it'll be Hendrickson vs. Andrew Thomas all night. Big matchup for Thomas as he continues to build his resume.
• Shane Bowen's defenses in Tennessee had success against Burrow: 3 points, 20 points, 19 points in the last three meetings. The Titans' pass rush was the key in those matchups (nine sacks in Cincy's 19-16 win in the 2021 divisional round). Basically can't blitz Burrow because he'll destroy it, so will be key for the front four to get home. Should be another game with a lot of simulated pressures. The Giants are ninth in red zone TD percentage. The Bengals are going to move the ball. Ending drives with field goals will be a win for the Giants.
• With Kayvon Thibodeaux out at least the next four weeks, this is a golden opportunity for Azeez Ojulari in a contract year. Ojulari can fill the void as a pass rusher, but he's not as stout against the run. Imagine we'll see Patrick Johnson and/or Boogie Basham mixed in on some early downs.
• Rookie LB Darius Muasau rotated in for Micah McFadden for one series last week. Expect that to continue, likely a series per half, depending on the game flow. They want to get the rookie integrated.
• The Giants' young corners had their best game of the season last week: Their reward: An even tougher challenge tonight.
Deonte Banks has been traveling with the opposing team's No. 1 WR every game. Maybe that's just how they'll operate regardless of opponent. Wonder though if this is the matchup that calls for a change-up. Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are both No. 1 WRs, and it's harder to disguise coverages when a corner is following a receiver. Need to at least try to disguise against Burrow, even though he's a great processor. If they do travel, I'd expect Banks to be on Chase. Tackling will be a key in the secondary because he's so dangerous after the catch.
• Another specialist change with Matt Haack getting signed yesterday to replace punter Jamie Gillan, who got hurt in practice. That also means a new holder for new-ish kicker Greg Joseph.

Big opportunity for OLB Azeez Ojulari. He will get the majority of Kayvon Thibodeaux's snaps. Ojulari hadn't topped 28 defensive snaps over first 5 weeks. He should top that on Sunday night.
Ojulari's most productive season was as a rookie when he had 8.0 sacks.
clear that absent injuries, Hawkins will be inactive every week. If that happens, then I'd be surprised if he's with the team next year. But as someone said, he was a late round pick. They rarely work out.

not sure how much of this I blame on Daboll. It was Bowen who called a ridiculous defensive alignment on third and 18 that let Burrow run for a 47 yard TD. Tracy has also been open in the flat on several occasions where Jones either didn't see him or thought he could get something better downfield. That's not on Daboll either.
Everyone knows to go 2 high, sell out on stopping run and make Jones beat you through the air. Daboll can't get away from the power game with Tracy. Most of these games are gonna come down to whether the Giants can establish the run. Go back under center and run it.

Wandale was running open on the missed ball on 3rd down. Slayton was just open on that RPO that Thomas screwed up. Tracy was definitely an open option on that INT. Make one of these plays and the game is likely different.

is killing us. The terrible INT and missing or ignoring Tracy several times in the flat for what would have been good gains. His completions have mostly been to his first read. As someone said, when he has to go off script he fails.

I'm starting to get the same feeling I would get watching Strahan, Tuck and co. The rewarded hope of a big defensive stop, a sack. Dex has been coming through for that this year. Watching him power past offensive linemen and slinging down quarterbacks is just awesome.
I don't even know anymore what to say, Jones just lacks the it factor. Yes, he makes some plays but they are bail out plays, not attacking plays. We just seem so toothless in our bite!
Defenses have no fear of the Giants scheme and playcalls with Jones. They don’t care about his RPO or read options either. They’ll give 70 yards of that each game.
This is a real good showing by the defense. Team is starting to feel more and more like its a QB away from doing something. Its been obvious, but the more obvious it becomes means other areas of the team have improved and Jones deficiencies stand out more.
Pass to Hyatt looked like miscommunication. Lack of playbook knowledge or chemistry, whatever it is, he's not a net positive if he isn't being used deep. Cincinnati are playing their DB's four deep and opens up the flats. Kind of telling Tracy has been the best, most efficient weapon tonight.

The reason Daboll needs to run it is b/c the defensive scheme is tilted towards making Jones beat them with his arm and he can't do it. I agreed with your last point earlier but it stems from the major limitations in Jones game.

I don’t think we need an elite QB. Sam Darnold , Baker Mayfield , are better QBs than Jones, look what they are doing for their teams. Jones is not an NFL QB. I'm not even sure he's a journeyman backup at this point. And at this point I'd rather see Lock or DeVito. The fact that many first round QBs bust isn't a reason to stay with Jones. As I said earlier, we could have signed Gardner Minshew, Baker Mayfield, or Joe Flacco, or drafted Spencer Rattler. The vast majority of journeyman veteran QBs would be better than Jones.

There is no way to guarantee a replacement QB will be elite, but that's no reason to avoid moving on from a QB who's guaranteed to be no better than average.
But somehow people will still be making excuses for him all the way till the end. Giants defense dominated the Bengals tonight and the QB let them down. What a perfect exemplification of how important solid QB play is than Joe Burrow who got shellacked more than Jones but rose above a shit performance by his team and made some huge plays at the most critical time to seal the win for his team. DJ im sure is a great guy, but he will never be a QB to lead a team to victory when the you absolutely have to rise to the occasion and put the team on your back. The only reason you stick with him going forward is to tank for draft picks knowing that you will lose every game a team doesn’t choke away.
3rd and 17, coverage is good, but we allow QB to scramble for 47 yard touchdown…
1st and 10 from opponent 14, play action, first read is wide open for at least 5 yards, Jones doesn’t throw it, waits to throw deeper route, gets arm hit and INT.
4th and 3 late in game, Jones forces it to first read in Slayton when Robinson is coming open behind him for a bigger gain.
That’s just three plays. Reverse any one of them and your win probability goes way up. The common denominator is Jones on two of them, so I totally understand wanting to move on.
The team really looks pretty good with a good quarterback.

I don’t think we need an elite QB. Sam Darnold , Baker Mayfield , are better QBs than Jones, look what they are doing for their teams. Jones is the constant here man, you are delusional to think he is an NFL starting caliber QB. Guy is a shell of his previous self, and even then he was just a mediocre QB who can only make one read plays with the ball.

Game was a microcosm of Jones’ career. Makes some good throws, he’s a weapon running the ball. But he tried to chuck one over the middle with a rusher in his face, then locks onto one guy and forces it in big pressure spots
And apparently the one good game every 2 months is enough for the franchise to keep him as the starting QB, now 6 years running.

Jones is not an NFL QB. I'm not even sure he's a journeyman backup at this point. And at this point I'd rather see Lock or DeVito. The fact that many first round QBs bust isn't a reason to stay with Jones. As I said earlier, we could have signed Gardner Minshew, Baker Mayfield, or Joe Flacco, or drafted Spencer Rattler. The vast majority of journeyman veteran QBs would be better than Jones.
Schoen has added really good talent. That's why I don't agree with those who want to completely revamp it.

The answer is that he should have just taken the sack to preserve the FG try, especially in a close game where we hadn't scored any points.

There is no way to guarantee a replacement QB will be elite, but that's no reason to avoid moving on from a QB who's guaranteed to be no better than average.

1st and 10 from opponent 14, play action, first read is wide open for at least 5 yards, Jones doesn’t throw it, waits to throw deeper route, gets arm hit and INT.
4th and 3 late in game, Jones forces it to first read in Slayton when Robinson is coming open behind him for a bigger gain.
That’s just three plays. Reverse any one of them and your win probability goes way up. The common denominator is Jones on two of them, so I totally understand wanting to move on.
I never thought Ojulari was any good for a second.
Now he's making some plays.
He will have 2 or maybe 3 good games this year and you will certainly hear from every one of them then.
