NFT: Trying to help my 75yr mother find good hearing aids, HELP!

GiantCuse : 10/17/2024 1:56 pm
My mother can't seem to find a pair of hearing aids and/or the right technicians to get them dialed in properly and its effecting all aspects of her quality of life in dramatically negative ways. If anyone has already gone down this rabbit hole, i'd love any tips or to connect to pick your brain.

She'd tried a few different types but nothing that successfully blocks out background noise so she can hold normal conversation. She's getting depressed and says she feels like a blind person since she can't do anything on her own any longer.
if you have access to Costco

go there. I've had great luck with my Kirkland hearing aids. They clean/service them whenever I am in the store.
Don't laugh

But if you're on the Apple ecosystem, AirPods can be a surprising alternative. They say you can put your phone in the 'middle' of the group conversation, or just direct the mic to where you want sound amplified, for decent results.
My mom got Costco at first and they were fine

I bought her some Jabras which were also good and you can control them with your phone. Plus they do a free hearing test online. Wirecutter gave them great reviews. Miracle Ear is great if you have lots of money because of the local, helpful service but they are quadruple the price of anywhere else.

The government eased restrictions on them so prices are down and competition is up. Try the Jabra website. (My mom's main problem with her hearing aids is that she keeps losing them. I'm probably out 5K in lost hearing aids that will all turn up someday.)

am thirding the Costco reco

I don't know about hearing tests on line. If your mom is a member, or if you have a family plan, find the nearest warehouse to you that has an Audiology department and schedule an exam--I hate them because my continuously deteriorating hearing is embarrassing to me when I cannot make out the words spoken into the headphones.....grrrr. These are licensed audiologists in the Store's hearing aid center.

As implied above I think Jabra is now the House brand and the aids--battery + microprocessor sits on top of the ear nudged against the head, with the fish line connection to the microphone that is fitted to the aural canal--yes, a mold has to be taken for each ear to get a snug fit. The hearing aids come back in about 3 weeks at about half the cost of comparable units.
You didn’t ask this question but my Medicare Advantage plan includes

Hearing aids so insurance paid a big chunk of my hearing aids. Also a little trick that might help is to inly use one hearing aid for a few days and then switch to the other ear.

It helps with the adjustment. You don't get the feeling you are in a cave.
first, congratulate her

for reaching 75 without needing hearing aids. more and more studies are showing a connection between hearing loss and dementia, so it’s something to be taken seriously. i personally started to lose my hearing when i was 25, so im jealous of her.

i would strongly encourage your mom to see an ENT, and to have a proper, clinical hearing test done. then, if insurance allows, I would recommend a brand like Widex, which makes very low profile, high-tech, bluetooth enabled hearing aids.

a lot of what is on this thread is true - airpod pro 2 can emulate a portion of what real hearing aids can do, and the deregulation of hearing aid manufacture has given the consumer more options.

that said, hearing isn’t something where i would look for a bargain. hope that helps!
