NFT: UVA basketball coach Tony Bennett is retiring per reports

Mad Mike : 10/17/2024 4:34 pm
Jeff Goodman has it. Timing like this, you'd assume it's a health issue or something very serious with him or a loved one. Hope it's nothing terrible.

Losing a lot of coaches to retirement recently-Roy, K, Wright, Boeheim, & I'm sure others I'm forgetting.
Wow

Hadn't heard even a WHISPER about this. The Blue-White scrimmage was just a few weeks ago. It does give the impression that something is wrong. He wouldn't bail like this for no reason.

I imagine Ron Sanchez or Jason Williford will take the helm.
not only that
Greg from LI : 10/17/2024 4:47 pm : link
but he just signed a contract extension a few months ago
Hopefully everything is ok

pretty crazy to quit on the team like that right before the season. Maybe he's timing it this way to give an assistant a chance to run with the job for a year?

Jeff Goodman now is saying that it's not health related so, maybe? Dean Smith did something similar so Bill Guthridge would be his successor, though not as close to the season as this.
Thank god

I have a friend close to UVA sports and he's hearing - for now - that Bennett is tired of the current system.

NIL and the transfer portal killed college FB and BB. Great for the players, but not any of the teams.

Not surprising in the least. Look @ Saban in CF.
Talked with some Richmond area high school coaches last winter.

One assistant coach predicted Tony would retire early because of the new changes to college sports. He mentioned Tony was resistant to changing his system for NIL and in particular the transfer portal. The other coaches weren’t shocked by the prediction and another agreed.

Glad to hear it isn’t health related. He’s a good man.
It’s no secret that he hates what college sports has become
Greg from LI : 10/17/2024 6:39 pm : link
He’s a good friend of Jay Wright and spoke approvingly of his decision to retire. I expected him to retire within a few more years.

The timing is still stunning.

I love college sports. I'm not up in arms against the NIL. But I do think it's in the Wild Wild West era & I get people who are completely turned off by it.

I don't think the NIL is terrible, but its an unregulated free for all as is the transfer portal.

Imagine being a HC at a place like UVA and players are arguing over who should get more NIL money because they are better or are playing better or whatever. I bet that happens all the time at all the big schools. FB too.
Will always be thankful for that title

And the decade+ he gave for the program. Who knows what the next 15 years looks like but no one would bet we win as much as we did previously.

It’s a transitional era - hard to predict what will end up being the long term system for NCAA.

I met Jay Wright last week at a private event. Talked to him for a good 15 mins before the event. If not for what college sports has become he’d still be coaching.

I asked Tony Bennett literally last week why so many people thought he could be the next Jay Wright and suddenly retire out of nowhere.

His response, verbatim: "I gotta call Jay Wright and see what he says, right? I always have said, when you're doing this, you're in this profession, whether you agree how it's going or not, you have to be true to yourself and really look at it and say, who am I? Can I operate how I want and can it be successful enough? And you get to choose if you wanna be a part of it or not. And when you feel it's time, like Jay did, like Coach K, maybe Saban, it's their choice. And you can sit here and complain and gripe. Or you have a decision to make. Either you try to do it in your way or you get to make that decision. So I think Jay Wright probably foresaw the where this is going ... It'll be better whenever there's regulations. Is that three to five years away? Who knows? But if it's not -- those are decisions that every man has to make when it's his time."

I also heard from a UVA sportswriter that it's the current NIL

system. Doesn't fit with his values and how he likes to build a team. He suspects the timing is to give Sanchez the best shot at getting the job permanently.
