How long into the Dave Brown era did fans realize he sucked?

Jones reminds more of Brown every game now.

After Phil & Hoss, it was a QB wasteland for a long time, Brown just seemed to blend in with the rest.

So, I know most of us feel that we reached to take our current QB, but what George Yound did was just fucking ridiculous. There is no way Dave Brown was going to be a top QB pick the following year.

We had an Arena Football team at the time (Albany Firebirds), and I saw Kurt Warner play a nearly perfect game at the arena. Every pass was literally right in the WR's hands, and leading them perfectly. And you could hear the pop when the ball hit their hands (similar to the pops I heard when Kerry Collins hit WR's in Camp Albany).

Not only was Warner insanely accurate, this was before he hurt his hand in NJ against that arena team (it's why he was prone to fumbling in the NFL).

Brown was nothing like that. He was less than accurate in camp,and his throws were weak. I know the Giants players were at that Arena game, too. Sadly, the Giants front office didn't take advantage of that when they were in Albany.

Imagine Kurt Warner on the 1998 Giants. History might have been a LOT different if that happened!!

FWIW (and it ain't much) Jones is better than Brown was. Kanell and Graham were better than Brown was.

Even with a winning record in 1994 Brown sucked. 12 TDs and 16 INTs. Only 2500 yards passing.

His suckiness was confirmed in the first game of the 1995 season, the 35-0 loss to Dallas.

94 the team finished strong and ended up 9-7. Not bad for a first year starter. 95 doubts started but remember, in those days it was acknowledged that it took QBs several years to develop so a bit of a pass. 1996 was 3rd full year as starter and the mob started forming. 1997 there was a school that said lets see if the new QB Guru HC can straighten him out. Quickly everyone realized that no, he just isn't good enough.

We also drafted Strahan in the second round that year…if we had our first round pick, who would we have used it on? Would we have still wanted to draft Strahan?

he just blew it that year with the dallas game and it was more ineptitude after that. his rookie year was ok.

There would be 3 posters on this site defending him as a good QB in a bad situation. Most fans realized Brown sucked just as quickly as they realized Jones sucks. But we always have a handful of fans who buy a jersey and then lose all sense of objectivity.

the infamous "closing the gap" game

His flaws had to do with a slow release and not being able to throw outside the numbers without floating the ball. He could, however, complete a pass on a rollout or scramble. Jones has the same flaws and more.

I would like to read a pre-draft and post-draft review of Brown and see how closely it lines up with Jones.

I think I have told this story before here but here goes. In the days before Sunday Ticket or streaming, I was sitting in a bar watching the Giants game and everyone was complaining about Brown. Embarrassingly, because Brown had a winter home locally, Dave Brown’s wife was in the bar and had to listen to everyone dumping on her husband.
