I want to bring this up again. I was annoyed when Schoen was hired. It wasn't because we chose Schoen, but rather how we chose him. The more time that went on, it seemed as though it was predetermined. We heard basically how Mara did a ton of work on Schoen prior to hiring him. That's great but it also seemed like guys like Peters were never a real option because the same work didn't seem to happen or at least to our knowledge. That I didn't like.
Now, let's look at Schoen hiring Daboll. Again, it was basically predetermined who Schoen was picking and almost all of the candidates were guys Schoen had a connection with. I get that. I'm not saying I agree with it but I get it. I was annoyed that we never interviewed Demeco Ryans.
Now we look at where we are now. We know how close Schoen and Daboll are. Do we think Schoen is going to do what is best for the Giants or what is best for his relationship with Daboll? I don't like the dynamic of friends hiring friends.
So, who is making the call on Daboll? We know in the past that Coughlin always stuck up for his coaches when pressure was applied from above. What is going to happen with this dynamic? I feel like it adds an unnecessary element to thia situation that, quite honestly, shouldn't exist in the first place. I just will never understand casting such a narrow net when it comes to the huring process.
He HAS a QB in Houston.
Makes a big difference.
Schoen has been with multiple organizations, worked his way up to an important role with a good team. Understands modern football. Not a Giants lifer. Similar with Daboll.
Both these guys were well regarded. Maybe they actually suck. But we have now gone through a lot of people who seem to suck, so perhaps there is something else happening here...
I have no problem with Daboll and Schoen being close. I actually quite like it. But they should be fired together or not at all.

If we hired Peters, then he hires Ryans, and everything is different. I'm not saying better but just different. And there is a difference between hiring someone you know and someone your are close with. Both can work but gets murky when it doesn't. It's not so much about who was hired but the process.
The bigger problem is Gettleman/Judge type of hires where you give yourself no chance of success to begin with.
1. He hired a guy not baptized in the Giants Way.
2. He gave Schoen full decision-making authority of personnel.
I have taken Mara's word on #2. And based on what I have read and heard from Schoen, he has that gavel. Does Schoen have to make sure Mara is taking his heart medication to control his palpitations? Yes. But this is Schoen's team.
Do I wish Mara hired someone else now in hindsight? 100%. And I wanted a Peterson/McDaniel combo. But I liked the people Mara interviewed and the way he went outside the organization.
Where Mara lucked out in hiring Schoen, and this is the problem with the hire, was that he found a guy who admired Jones almost as much as he does. Which has led to this QB Hell.
I'm in the minority in that I like Daboll. I think his problem is his confidence in believing he can coach up virtually anyone to be a capable NFL QB. So, he probably liked the challenge of trying to take Jones to the next level after the Miracle of 2022.
We need a QB, We need a DT to complement Dex, We need an alpha CB
I think those three things will right the ship. there is plenty of talent on this team. It's amazing the difference a good QB makes -- just look at Daniels on the Commanders
What I see is that they and we are paying a heavy price for the Jones debacle -- and it is a debacle -- make no bones about it

It's a good post, even though I have been harsh on Daboll.
Jones right now is killing this team.
This board is a rollercoaster. Just with the last 10 days we were praising the team, the most recent draft class, and the team's probabiility of being 5-2 with just a decent QB.
Now we want billboards lol
And with all that, there are still 8 teams worse than us!!!

Yo, Gettleman was in this building and helped it win two super bowls, got a 15-1 Carolina team to the Super Bowl. Was part of 8 or 9 super bowl playing teams. Schoen had no resume other than being Beane's errand boy and never ran anything in his life. The game might have passed Gettleman by and there was no doubt Gettleman was bad, but Schoen has no record of accomplishment other than being the errand boy of they guy who drafted Josh Allen (and hasn't won anything with him not a super bowl not a conference title). Joe Judge might have been the worst NFL coach hire of all time so and Schoen isn't that bad, but Gettleman had a resume of leadership including time in this building where Schoen did not have anything close. The guy on hard knocks came across as a lightweight.
It actually explains a lot to me about the world we live in today.

what do you mean a case. Gettleman was abysmal as GM (that is a fact), but he had a resume of accomplishment and ran an organization prior to being hired here. That is not an opinion, that is a fact. Now, you want to argue he was old and it seemed like you knew the game passed him by--fine. But he was 15-1 in 2015 and he was hired here in late 2018.
Schoen had nothing other Beane talking him up to guys like Garafolo and the fact that they drafted Josh Allen. Give me a break--there was no comparison between the two hirings. And, on more thing. Teams make bad decisions all the time, the problem the Giants had was that they did not recognize these bad decisions with regard to Jones especially and Gettleman to a lesser extent in time. They have with the coaches fwiw.
