The problem I keep having is I seriously can't tell if this is Daboll speaking truthfully or if this is Daboll repeating what he is told.
Unless the fiery Daboll returns, I'm done with him. I had no problem with the thrown tablet, the yelling, the passion, etc. It beats the Hell out of this apathetic version. I don't know why he listened to critics or quite possibly Mara listened to critics and was embarrassed this wasn't the "Giants way" forgetting Parcells and Coughlin once coached this team to glory.

Yeah, I get that too. He pretty much agreed with Nabers being open, but then just sticks with Jones?

You think Lock is a better option?
I sure as heck don’t
Like he doesn't want to be here. As if he's being dictated to.
IDK, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
I hear you. I refuse to believe Daboll is looking at the tape and concluding Jones is really doing his job. I just can't buy it.
Then there is this about Jones from Daboll's presser:
BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah and took care of it. There’s always a few in there where the defense might get you, or there’s a disguise and it looks like something and there’s a reason behind why we do what we do. But he’s taking care of the ball. He’s made the right decisions, for the most part. We’ll go ahead and work hard to get ready for a great Pittsburgh Steelers team.
BFD. Jones is protecting the ball Wuuuuufuckingweeee. We are 31st in PPG at 14. The $160M man still can't produce points after six years.
But, hey, they are going to watch more tape, work harder, and be "Smart, Tough, and Dependable"...
Can you imagine the dialogue in the hallways at 1925 Giants Way?
Mara: "Joe, did you see what time Daniel got to work today?"
Schoen: "I heard. Yeah, 5:45am. That's great!"
Mara: "Kid is such a hard worker. I think he'll be ready on Monday. He and Dabs are turning over every stone to battle Pittsburgh..."
Fist bump occurs.
Schoen: "Smart, Tough, Dependable!"
Mara (grins): "I'll see you at lunch. I'll see if Chris wants to go..."
he going to do. All the options are bad. You get a sense he really wanted a Qb and didn't get his way and now his showing his ass
The options are all bad but the future is more important and Jones is one TJ Watt hit away from costing them valuable cap dollars. It's insanity to keep playing him out there. If the purpose is to 'tank' because you know Jones is incapable of scoring, Lock will do a good enough job of that by throwing dumb picks without the risk of the injury clause.

I don't think Lock or DeVito are better options. In fact, I don't think Lock should play unless it is as an in game replacement. I think DeVito should play just to see if he is a worse option or not (the answer is not clear). But, either is a different option, which at this point, is very important. Jones just sucks and is sucking the life out of the team. Right now, it is anyone but Jones for me and I don't doubt there are players who agree.
But you keep doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting something drastically different?.....the guy is a FUCKING MORON! DONE, I am DONE with him Got to GO!
Yet he's sticking with Jones...will be happy when he's gone WITH Jones. Wants to pout, bitch, and moan during the game but won't hold anyone accountable. Goodbye Daboll.

I think Lock or Devito can get injured without consequence. I think the Giants' record probably ends up the same with any of the three because none of them are good enough.
Does it really matter how we get to the basement as long as we don't trigger DJ's injury guarantee in the process?

"Look, I know he isn't very good, some might say he sucks, but what other options do I have? Drew fucking Lock? Tommy? Don't field a QB and direct snap to the running backs? John loves the kid and wants me to keep starting him, Joe doesn't have the balls to stand up to John, so where does that leave me? I'm just making sure I don't get fired for cause so I can still collect my salary, alright"

but Daboll looks like a totally defeated man. His reaction to all of this is so blase and uninspiring that it seems as if he (and Schoen) know for sure they're either gone or coming back. My fear is the latter of course.
we've seen a similar situation before--when Eli was declining and McAdoo switched to Geno Smith. McAdoo paid for that "mistake" with his job. In hindsight, McAdoo was obviously a flawed coach, but he understood Eli was shot and his desire for Mahomes has been vindicated in a world-historical way.
Now DJ is no Eli and you can make an excuse for a franchise making sure a legend gets a royal exit, even if it's not the best business decision.
But what we're seeing now--another QB situation where the starter should almost certainly be benched even if it is just to underline to the team that we hold people accountable for shit performances no matter who they are--might suggest that the Jones decision is not entirely in Daboll's hands.
And if that's the case, we're so fucking fucked that it's hard to see a way out.
Hard to believe Daboll is willing to go down with the "Jones" Ship
Something is brewing from above....and we as fans suffer for it.
Why can't Daboll and Schoen speak more freely and act more wisely than throwing the same wet paper at the wall and hoping for a better brand of wallpaper??????
he going to do. All the options are bad. You get a sense he really wanted a Qb and didn't get his way and now his showing his ass

How much worse can either Lock or DeVito be? You mean we may get shut out rather than score 3 points? I want nothing to do with Lock, but why not see if we have anything in DeVito? Probably not, but it's not like we're losing anything.
Jones is one TJ WATT hit away from being in a wheelchair the rest of his life..That's what crazy about this QB situation..
It took them a half, but Pittsburgh completely neutralized a more talented Jets team last night and held them to a measly 15 points.
So, what the hell are the Giants going to do in Pittsburgh? While anything is possible, but I'm not sure how we score. This is Pittsburgh's last game before their bye, and they need to keep pace with the Ravens. This game might be even uglier than yesterday.
Despite the likely loss, however, Daboll will be able to look at the tape, see who did what, and get the team ready to work hard for the Washington game.

They are scoring 15 points per game. 30th out of 32 teams.
There is no value to preserve within Daniel Jones, as he shouldn't stay on the team and most certainly cannot be traded. However there is a liability to prevent triggering with his contract.
At least more play with DeVito can see if he can keep some type of backup job because we will need more than one QB next year.
And spare me the "DJ gives us the best chance to win" crap as he cannot move the Offense and he can't get the team into the end zone. At all.
..he did have Josh Allen. And I distinctly remember us all on a thread watching the Bills and Chiefs in the playoffs, and I wrote "why is he simply running Allen on QB runs (like he's done with DJ) in a game such as this instead of throwing it". This was in the later stages of the game. It looked amateurish.
I think someone wrote "Because it works". Well ok lol
I think Allen made Daboll look good in the pro game.
His bullshit style of offense was something Allen could function in but then could make magic with is arm or legs to improvise.
DJ can't come close to that - but the basics of the offense seemed very flawed to me.
That's just people's response seeing no plays being made because the QB is a failure at getting the ball out.
The WRs are open all the time, the tape has been showing it since *last season* when everyone thought the problem was the WRs sucked.
They were getting open before Nabers, and when Nabers was out hurt. He is easily able to scheme plays and opportunities.
You're playing the result, when all he can do is create the opportunities and put players in position to succeed. He's doing that. The throws aren't being made on time, not being made accurately, and not consistently.
They scored more points last year with a worse offensive line and QBs that everyone said sucked.
Tee off on him for continuing to put this QB out there *if he actually can change that*.

He's the coach, saying the WRs are open all the time.
OK then.....it's one of two things. The QB or the OL.
I don't think it's the OL, not in 2024 of the NFL.
So naturally it's the QB. Why no change then?
Why is he ignoring the obivous?
He's a bad coach IMO, and particulary poor at being a HC.
DJ can't come close to that - but the basics of the offense seemed very flawed to me.
I think he was a bad hire.
It just never ends.
Shurmur's offense ultimately failed Jones. And then Garrett's offense wasn't good enough for Jones. And then Freddie Kitchens couldn't devise an offense.
But Daboll and Kafka arrived and worked a miracle in 2022 with training wheels, smoke and mirrors.
And now that Jones has returned to his inevitable mean, we have to blame someone for Jones's limitations.
So, next in the blame line is Daboll.
Sorry, but Paul Brown, Bill Walsh, Paul Holmgren, Don Coryell, Don Shula or Joe Gibbs could never create an offense for Daniel Jones to thrive.

The OL was a shitshow sunday, but every game this season before that the OL gave the offense a chance to play winning football.
It's the QB.
And, *if* Daboll has the ability to make that switch on his own, and he doesn't, then sure. Can his ass. He's an idiot.
The Giants over my 20 years watching have given me all the evidence in the world to believe that who plays starting QB for this team is *not* just one coach's decision. John Mara can yap till he's blue in the face that he lets people make decisions on their own, there's no reason to believe him. He makes bad decisions all the time.

He's got a starting QB who he's admitting isn't finding the open receivers. Maybe it's really Daboll who thinks Jones is still his best option and gives them the best chance to win.
Not sure how he makes that assessement with Lock playing 30 minutes of football in the preseason.
Play the guy already.
He threw a ball to Hyatt yesterday that was the best deep pass I've seen all season just about.

Well I've been watching since 1979 - if Mara learned anything from his father from that point it's hire the guys and let them do their thing.
Did not not learn anything from when George Young cut Phil Simms lose? He didn't want it or like it, but had to let it happen if you want guys to do their job.
If Mara is dicatating DJ plays, shame on him and double shame on Daboll for being a puppet and staining his resume.
It's time for Daboll to start hearing from the fans!

Phil Simms being cut was a long time ago, even for John. A lot's happened since. Winning two titles as the owner, rather than being at his dad's side can change a person too. You start to believe your way is the right way.
I go back to when they agreed to sit Eli down, and he immediately held that against the coach and GM. These are not the actions of someone who doesn't get involved. He made sure to distance himself from it, but they *had to seek his approval to do it*
He's been convinced that he has something with Jones. He's said openly how he feels about him. He wants to be right, and he feels like he hasn't gotten a fair opportunity with a team around him.
You’re watching a HC trying to put together offensive game plans for the worst QB room in the NFL.
I believe him when he says Jones gives him the best chance to win knowing that it won’t be good enough.
It’s a no win situation and he knows it.
SAD
It's coach/boss speak, where you aren't going to get a straight answer.
As long as the plan is to start DJ for the next game, DJ will be proclaimed the starter going forward, even if the plan is to start someone else after the bye. Daboll is NOT going to say DJ gets one more game.
They are going to give DJ full opportunity to prove he should be retained next year. He has had some OK games, although the points haven't been there.
Once he's benched, it's hard to go back if Lock/Devito stink up the joint.
DJ is likely the starter til the bye. Nothing Daboll says now means DJ is the starter for the rest of the season.
....are explained to the owner, particularly a change at QB. I easily could see McAdoo/Reese sitting down w/ Mara over Eli.
Again, the owner owns the team he just doesn't show up on Sunday and say 'hey, how we doing today?'
We'll find out one way or another. It will either get leaked to the press that Mara has the mandate - or Daboll will finally come to his senses and try a change at QB.

And I am no fan of Daboll, but I just can't believe he is this oblivious. I think he is either not allowed to bench Jones, or he is playing Jones to make a point to the front office. I simply can't believe he thinks Jones gives him the best chance to win.
I know we are putting a lot of this on Daboll...but Schoen needs to
share in this absolute failure when he set the course of this season with Jones, Lock and Davito only!
He didn't draft a QB or try to trade for a viable starter.
I watched Washington yesterday with their star of the future and a very viable Marcus Mariota continue the charge very effectively.
Schoen absolutely contributed to this fiasco by sending Daboll to war with an empty pistol and another with the barrel bend back to shoot directly at himself!
I do not understand the blind allegiance to Jones. He simply is bad and does not score points even when he’s completing passes.
He’s never won anything. He has no proven track record. This isn’t like deciding if you should bench Eli when he couldn’t play anymore.
The team wins more when he’s hurt and doesn’t play than when he does play. That is not a coincidence. He is not the best QB on the team. It’s been proven he doesn’t give them the best chance to win.
The team has to be thinking that he’s not coming back after this year right?
The fans hate Jones to the point that they wait hours to scream at him after the game on his way to his car.
What is the holdup? Bench him and play anyone else.
I honestly do not understand the blind allegiance.
Mariota has been awful the past several years. It's Washington and its staff making these guys perform better. Which is kind of funny, because their line coach was pushed out of here.
the nabers comment and the reference to daboll agreeing that he was open.
Every play has a 1st, 2nd, 3rd option etc. Nabers could have been open, while being the 2nd or 3rd option and pressure coming so quickly that they never got a chance to explore it.
So Nabers could have both been open while it not being an idication it was or wasn't Jones fault. Not sticking up for Jones in any way shape or form, but its just basic knownledge of how a football play is designed.
he gives us the best chance to win, and (2) we're still mathematically alive.
As to #1, he sees these guys every day in practice. No doubt, Jones sucks. But I suspect the other 2 suck worse. There's no obvious solution on our roster.
Did Schoen make that decision by himself? I think not. They could have offered Russ Wilson a chance to compete with DJ this year and allow the best option to start.
Jones is probably the best option right now and that’s not saying much. Let the year and misery play out and see where we stand now. Hopefully Jones puts us in a position to draft a good QB high!
Our juggernaut offense suggests otherwise. It is hard to bench the highest paid player in team history especially when upper management may be disappointed.
Jones is the qb this year, after this year, giants will make a move for a qb either via free agency or a strong move up the draft board if needed for a qb.
No clue why you guys are so hung up on what he says. He is handcuffed. You think cutlers or shit lock are turning things around? This was jones last chance. He failed. Giants will move on in offseason.
For now, root for losses
I don't think Mara should fire the coach at the end of
the year unless he completely loses the faith of the team.
Jones, has proven he can't cut it. I don't think any coach could find much success with him. Jones doesn't play up to his physical abilities. But I do think they should bench Jones for Lock or DeVito.

I think you are misreading a lot of what is happening. Unless the whole team knows and agrees that Jones at least keeps them in games (debatable by the way), Daboll and Schoen risk losing that entire locker room and when that happens nobody comes back next year and we get all new coaches and a new GM.. At least Cutlets would bring some excitement and show players you don't get to keep your job just because of what you are being paid.

The INJURY. GUARANTEE. This isn't complicated. The only way that Jones isn't the worst option on the team is if he's the only QB on the team -- the injury guarantee ALONE cements this.
I've said it repeatedly. Jones cannot see the field. Is it a cognitive issue? I don't know. But you can't have him as your quarterback and expect to have a successful passing game. If Lock has the same issue, play DeVito. Or lose out for a higher draft position.
From the game Sunday, I saw the guy that has the QB title
staring down his receiver at least 85% of the time. We will not win with him at QB. Sit his ass and save the $25 million. The QB was given the nickname Vanilla Vick, not because of his running, but due to the fact that's the only type of offense you can run with him. He has no arm strength, likely due to the neck injury. Could you imagine if we had a mid-tier QB? We would be competitive and watchable.

Jones is playing exactly to his abilities. He is not able to be a winning QB and never was. Dave Brown part 2, but with a big ass contract.
It matters this ealry in the season to try to win so if (and I emphasize IF IF IF) Jones gives the Giants the best chance to win before the playoffs then you play him.
It's easy for us that don;t go to games and say "Don't play him." But if you go to games - most people who bought season tickets didn't pay big bucks so they could watch the Ginats deliberately tank the next bunch of home games.
something that was bothering me as stated was that neither Lock nor DeVito would get any practice reps with the 1's. How is this not negligent? Probabilistically, one of the back ups will be needed against the Steelers given their D. Does squelching a QB controversy trump being prepared?

For now, root for losses
I think you are misreading a lot of what is happening. Unless the whole team knows and agrees that Jones at least keeps them in games (debatable by the way), Daboll and Schoen risk losing that entire locker room and when that happens nobody comes back next year and we get all new coaches and a new GM.. At least Cutlets would bring some excitement and show players you don't get to keep your job just because of what you are being paid.
Personally I would get zero excitement from DeVito.
I'll tell you the one thing that gets me excited about the Giants...the prospect of the home crowd utterly flipping out and creating an embarrassing scene (think snowballs against the Chargers in '95). I had the volume up on Sunday hoping for that, and it never really came.
something that was bothering me as stated was that neither Lock nor DeVito would get any practice reps with the 1's. How is this not negligent? Probabilistically, one of the back ups will be needed against the Steelers given their D. Does squelching a QB controversy trump being prepared?
There is barely enough time in a prep week to get the starters reps with the 1s. Its not negligent because its quite normal. You get 2-3 practices in a game week to install and practice a game plan. Backups arent developed during the season. That was last true long ago.
IDK, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah
Unless the fiery Daboll returns, I'm done with him. I had no problem with the thrown tablet, the yelling, the passion, etc. It beats the Hell out of this apathetic version. I don't know why he listened to critics or quite possibly Mara listened to critics and was embarrassed this wasn't the "Giants way" forgetting Parcells and Coughlin once coached this team to glory.

Yeah, I get that too. He pretty much agreed with Nabers being open, but then just sticks with Jones?
IDK, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
That's my feeling too. It's like he isn't able to change him out, so he is resigned to whatever happens.

You think Lock is a better option?
I sure as heck don’t
They all suck. This is like picking which QB sucks the least.
He needs to field the best team-he is coaching for his job right now.
Sadly,DJ gives us the best chance to win now.
IDK, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
It's not apathy. It's frustration.
BRIAN DABOLL: He was open a lot.

He must be dimly aware of his status and impact in some way.
They all suck. This is like picking which QB sucks the least.
Which is the EXACT scenario most of us dreaded when Schoen and Co. didn't land a rookie QB in the draft this year.

They crossed the 50 yard line once yesterday lol
I think Lock is a better option.
They aren't producing anything offensively, esp at home.
Mara wants to win games. QB is the #1 problem right now.
It's the easiest switch to make to jumpstart a team.
Even it it fails - it should be done.
Maybe Daboll doesn't like it here anymore and wants to get fired.
I would freaking love that!
If he doesn't realize he has to make the change BEFORE everything blows up in his face, then he's definitely NOT the right HC for this team.
Either way, BAD scenarios.
IDK, maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Have you had experience sensing apathy before?
Now DJ is no Eli and you can make an excuse for a franchise making sure a legend gets a royal exit, even if it's not the best business decision.
But what we're seeing now--another QB situation where the starter should almost certainly be benched even if it is just to underline to the team that we hold people accountable for shit performances no matter who they are--might suggest that the Jones decision is not entirely in Daboll's hands.
And if that's the case, we're so fucking fucked that it's hard to see a way out.
Something is brewing from above....and we as fans suffer for it.
Why can't Daboll and Schoen speak more freely and act more wisely than throwing the same wet paper at the wall and hoping for a better brand of wallpaper??????

GD is spot on.

How many Drew Lock games have you seen?
At least more play with DeVito can see if he can keep some type of backup job because we will need more than one QB next year.
And spare me the "DJ gives us the best chance to win" crap as he cannot move the Offense and he can't get the team into the end zone. At all.
"Brian must go!"
I don't think they're the ones making the call.
I think he was a bad hire.
This is what I go back to whenever anyone says "Yeah, Jones is terrible, but he's still the best option"
Tommy DeVito last year was more productive than Daniel Jones. Which doesn't make DeVito a good NFL QB, but it speaks volumes about how bad Jones is.

How can he continue to go along with Jones then?

I also think Mara put his thumb on scale on the DJ contract.
I believe him when he says Jones gives him the best chance to win knowing that it won’t be good enough.
It’s a no win situation and he knows it.
SAD
As long as the plan is to start DJ for the next game, DJ will be proclaimed the starter going forward, even if the plan is to start someone else after the bye. Daboll is NOT going to say DJ gets one more game.
They are going to give DJ full opportunity to prove he should be retained next year. He has had some OK games, although the points haven't been there.
Once he's benched, it's hard to go back if Lock/Devito stink up the joint.
DJ is likely the starter til the bye. Nothing Daboll says now means DJ is the starter for the rest of the season.
And your stance on Jones?
Again, the owner owns the team he just doesn't show up on Sunday and say 'hey, how we doing today?'
We'll find out one way or another. It will either get leaked to the press that Mara has the mandate - or Daboll will finally come to his senses and try a change at QB.
Daboll risk losing the locker room too.

May have already lost it.
This is an absolute group effort of suck!
Jones got hurt that Eagles win and missed the rest of the year. We never saw him play in Freddie's offense.
As to #1, he sees these guys every day in practice. No doubt, Jones sucks. But I suspect the other 2 suck worse. There's no obvious solution on our roster.
Jones is probably the best option right now and that’s not saying much. Let the year and misery play out and see where we stand now. Hopefully Jones puts us in a position to draft a good QB high!

At least Cutlets would bring some excitement and show players you don't get to keep your job just because of what you are being paid.
i used to think this was a joke, but now i’m seriously wondering. he seems like a completely different person.

BRIAN DABOLL: He was open a lot.
I've said it repeatedly. Jones cannot see the field. Is it a cognitive issue? I don't know. But you can't have him as your quarterback and expect to have a successful passing game. If Lock has the same issue, play DeVito. Or lose out for a higher draft position.

Jones is playing exactly to his abilities. He is not able to be a winning QB and never was. Dave Brown part 2, but with a big ass contract.
It's easy for us that don;t go to games and say "Don't play him." But if you go to games - most people who bought season tickets didn't pay big bucks so they could watch the Ginats deliberately tank the next bunch of home games.
