Former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs and Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas are among the first-time nominees.
I know there is always controversy if someone should be a first ballot Hall of famer regardless I think Eli needs to be in the Hall of Fame

I think most, if not all of us here, share that feeling.
It still boggles my mind that Strahan wasn't first ballot. If Michael Strahan is not first ballot, then basically only like 30-50 guys really deserve it, so like you said, it's no indignity.

just probably not first ballot, which isn't an indignity.

Mike, I couldn't agree more. How in God's name wasn't Strahan a first ballot HOFer?
This issue is that this year may be his best chance in the next few years. Brees (2026), Rivers (2026), Big Ben (2027), and Brady (2028) all become eligible in the next 3 years. Voters will compare them to Eli when voting and Eli could lose a bunch of those comparison. They aren't prevented from voting for both, but the comparisons will hurt Eli. If Eli does not get in this year, I could see him not getting in till 2029.
I think Joe may be the most over-rated player in NY sports history
A lot of the voters like him personnally and professionally. Its not the TV people voting. Its the peter kings and pat kirwins that have HOF votes.
Of that I'm less worried.

The best explanation I have is that, if I remember correctly, during his first year of eligibility there was an insanely stacked class of guys up for induction. But that still doesn't excuse it to me. Single season sack leader, who at the time was near the top in all time sacks, SB champ, and played the run extremely well (unlike some other pass rushers).

I'm with you. I am concerned that voters won't want to put Eli in on 1st ballot and then it will become more difficult for him over next few years as these other QB's become eligible, and he somehow gets squeezed out.

fair enough, but my point is that those who are saying it's no big deal if he doesn't get in Year 1 may be understating how much more difficult it will be for Eli to get in in the years that Brees, Roethlisberger and Brady are also up for HOF.
