How Schoen could let Barkley simply walk out the door with zero compensation is only eclipsed by the DJ contract in its epic stupidity. Hopefully Schoen understands that all of those boos are rightfully and properly attributable to Schoen himself.

I certainly don't blame him.
However they did offer a contract to him that he turned down previously.
It was no big secret that Schoen wanted to sign Barkley to tag Jones. Perhaps Barkley felt they would trade him sooner than later (and jettison Jones) if the team was unsucessful. IMO he wanted to dictate where he would wind up.
