Possible Veteran QBs available for trade

JoeyBigBlue : 10/28/2024 4:00 pm
After listening to Jon and Eric’s podcast this weekend I wanted to discuss some potential veteran QBs that could be had for trade in the offseason. These are guys that are current starters that may or may not be available for trade in the offseason. Which one of these guys would interest you?

Matthew Stafford - He’s getting up there in age 36 (37 next season), but still a very good QB. Rams might want to go younger, if they don’t make the playoffs.

Kirk Cousins - Falcons loved Penix enough to draft him even after guaranteeing Cousins $100 million. Cousins could be had for the right draft pick and taking some of those guarantees.

Kyler Murray - Kyler has a huge contract and an injury history. Could be had if the Cardinals have another losing season.

Geno Smith - Seahawks can decide to go younger if they miss the playoffs. Has a pretty friendly contract.

Now the ultimate get (Brought up by Jon in the Podcast)

Justin Herbert - The Young, Big Armed QB has a huge contract. Jim Harbaugh might want to mold the team in his vision and having an ultra extra expensive QB might not be it. Would take a ton of draft capital and financial commitment for the Chargers to consider.
I don't love the idea of an expensive veteran
Mike from Ohio : 10/28/2024 4:09 pm : link
This team's roster is decent, but I don't they that they are a legit QB alone away from being a true competitor. My fear is that if Mara can be convinced the Jones experiment did not work (he may not be there yet), that he will want to bring in a vet just to prop up the roster and get to 7-9 wins and compete for a playoff spot.

The only guy on that list I would be excited about is Herbert, but that will be expensive, and I am not sure Harbaugh will be as quick to want to part with him as John suggested. If it were possible, can we get Herbert for Dexter Lawrence and a pick? That may help with the money and the timeline.

If it were my call, I would be looking for a cheaper vet to hold down the fort while a 2025 draft pick - or two - are developing. This is a young-ish roster and I would like to see the QB on the same developmental timeline as most of the rest of the top players.
Pretty set list

there and then there are Free Agent QB's too:

Sam Darnold
Andy Dalton
Jacoby Brissett
Jamesis Winston
Potential- Derek Carr- even here in 2024.
Carson Wentz

*If Rams lose to the Seahawks and Cardinals beat the Bears I could see Stafford available prior to trade deadline in 2024. If they had lost to Minnesota I think we would be hearing more now. The opposite is also true, Geno Smith could be available if the Seahawks lose again.

Don't be so sure the Giants don't become buyers at the deadline if they can get the Vet QB they want for the next season and half...
Herbert is going nowhere
JT039 : 10/28/2024 4:14 pm : link
Geno Smith is gonna be available this offseason.
I made this comment a while back
Biteymax22 : 10/28/2024 4:16 pm : link
The Harbaugh brothers are great coaches but they do weird things. I would not be shocked to see them look into trading Herbert, but I think it would take a huge package.

Knowing Jim Harbaugh and what he looks for, I unfortunately think Dex would be a part of it...
None of the players listed...

by the OP are interesting outside of maybe Murray. His size has always troubled me, but he's an amazing playmaker. He does have health issues the last few years that would be concerning.

If we go small, which, again, I dislike, the more interesting idea would be Young and his rookie contract. But he looks like a major reclamation project.

I have always had a crush on Field with his immense physical gifts. I would bet we could acquire him on a modest deal.

There is NFW the Chargers are moving off Herbert.

it's not like those vets will be free
Pork Chop : 10/28/2024 4:25 pm : link
Darnold and Smith will cost $25-30M/year. It's a much different issue than drafting someone on a rookie deal.
Geno
DanMetroMan : 10/28/2024 4:30 pm : link
Smith will be 35 next season. While the Giants would obviously be better with a different QB, trading a pick for Geno Smith seems rather ridiculous to me.
The only way Herbert is on the market
ajr2456 : 10/28/2024 4:44 pm : link
Is if he demands it. They’re not trading him otherwise.

Sign Winston and draft a QB
Theyre drafting a QB
Sammo85 : 10/28/2024 4:52 pm : link
There are a bunch coming out and it's about having a group of guys you really like and feeling you can win with one. The problem is fans think "there's only one". There isn't.

The Giants just didn't love McCarthy or Penix more than Nabers and believing in McCarthy or Penix based on some concerns that either would be echelon QBs in NFL.
Herbert
JonC : 10/28/2024 5:01 pm : link
Murray's got skills but not sure about his noggin.

NYG needs to draft a QB.
I just

Don’t see it happening. Cheaper to draft a qb and give the staff 2 years more. The Mara way.
You mentioned Cousins but he is playing well
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/28/2024 5:02 pm : link
Id trade next year's first for Penix right now.

If the Giants wanted Penix, they would have drafted him at 6 when they had the opportunity.

They didn’t want him then, and they’re not going to trade a top 10 pick for him either.
Even if you go get a vet QB now, we still better draft a QB too
PatersonPlank : 10/28/2024 5:16 pm : link
If we bring in a legitimate NFL QB then I would expect us to play around .500 ball, since I do think the team outside of QB is improved. If we do this we will never be in a position again to draft a highly ranked QB
I think highly of Herbert
George : 10/28/2024 5:18 pm : link
I think he'd do well here

You mean on BBI or the Giants? LOL
Don't think Herbert or Kyler are going to be available
Anakim : 10/28/2024 5:41 pm : link
Don't want Levis or Young. Fuck no to Geno. Probably don't want Carr. I'd like Cousins, but his contract is fucking gross.

Preference, in order:

1) Stafford
2) Jameis
3) Carr
Don't
Toth029 : 10/28/2024 5:42 pm : link
Realistically see Stafford or Cousins being dealt. Atlanta will make the playoffs and Penix is no sure thing.

No interest in Murray with his contract and lack of success so far.

Geno is older and not getting better.

Herbert is obviously the best of the choices but I don't see LAC moving off him unless he's pushing it. He is an odd fit in LAC with Greg Roman but he is playing well despite nothing at TE and WR.

Best bet is to, cheaply, sign a vet (no rapists) and draft QB in the 1st (if not 1st rounder, use ammo to trade up late in the 1st to have the fifth year guaranteed.

You may be able to add to that list:

Aaron Rodgers.

And no, I don't want him.
people were upset when we benched Eli for Geno Smith
markky : 10/28/2024 6:01 pm : link
imagine the shit storm if we bench Jones for Geno. /s
I think Daniel Jones may be available
Victor in CT : 10/28/2024 6:13 pm : link
And I agree with Mike in Ohio
Is Steve de Berg still alive?
Victor in CT : 10/28/2024 6:14 pm : link
He made a living being the punching bag for teams breaking in a new QB
I wouldn't mind
Amtoft : 10/28/2024 6:16 pm : link
Joe Flacco next year with a rookie

Some years there are no guys
Murray fuckin sucks.

If Herbert was going to be traded, it would have been this year when Harbaugh could have drafted JJM. It would be stupid to trade him now.
I'd
NYGiantFL007 : 10/28/2024 7:21 pm : link
kill any of you for 2/3 of that QB list are you kidding me...
No vets please
GeofromNJ : 10/28/2024 7:55 pm : link
Draft a QB. We got stuck with Jones because Gettleman, who once said, "I don't do this as a hobby", drafted as if drafting was his hobby. The expression on Shurmur's face during the Jones press conference convinced me that he thought Jones was a bad idea. I trust Schoen to do a better job than Gettleman.
no thanks
The Jake : 10/28/2024 7:59 pm : link
would much rather try to get someone like Josh Dobbs for $4m/season
call me crazy but
Rory : 10/28/2024 8:05 pm : link
I like Andy Dalton, always have.

Before his injury in Carolina he was playing well.
Draft your new QB
Rick in Dallas : 10/28/2024 8:09 pm : link
And sign Joe Flacco to a 1 year contract

No way. He is a year older and if the Giants draft in the top five which seems likely they will have a chance at a better and younger quarterback
They're drafting a QB.

It's a good year for us. There's not 3 guys going 1-2-3. There's 4-5 who will probably go at various times in Rd1, and differing opinions on those guys. We could pick 10-12 and still get the guy we like.
