After listening to Jon and Eric’s podcast this weekend I wanted to discuss some potential veteran QBs that could be had for trade in the offseason. These are guys that are current starters that may or may not be available for trade in the offseason. Which one of these guys would interest you?
Matthew Stafford - He’s getting up there in age 36 (37 next season), but still a very good QB. Rams might want to go younger, if they don’t make the playoffs.
Kirk Cousins - Falcons loved Penix enough to draft him even after guaranteeing Cousins $100 million. Cousins could be had for the right draft pick and taking some of those guarantees.
Kyler Murray - Kyler has a huge contract and an injury history. Could be had if the Cardinals have another losing season.
Geno Smith - Seahawks can decide to go younger if they miss the playoffs. Has a pretty friendly contract.
Now the ultimate get (Brought up by Jon in the Podcast)
Justin Herbert - The Young, Big Armed QB has a huge contract. Jim Harbaugh might want to mold the team in his vision and having an ultra extra expensive QB might not be it. Would take a ton of draft capital and financial commitment for the Chargers to consider.
The only guy on that list I would be excited about is Herbert, but that will be expensive, and I am not sure Harbaugh will be as quick to want to part with him as John suggested. If it were possible, can we get Herbert for Dexter Lawrence and a pick? That may help with the money and the timeline.
If it were my call, I would be looking for a cheaper vet to hold down the fort while a 2025 draft pick - or two - are developing. This is a young-ish roster and I would like to see the QB on the same developmental timeline as most of the rest of the top players.
Sam Darnold
Andy Dalton
Jacoby Brissett
Jamesis Winston
Potential- Derek Carr- even here in 2024.
Carson Wentz
*If Rams lose to the Seahawks and Cardinals beat the Bears I could see Stafford available prior to trade deadline in 2024. If they had lost to Minnesota I think we would be hearing more now. The opposite is also true, Geno Smith could be available if the Seahawks lose again.
Don't be so sure the Giants don't become buyers at the deadline if they can get the Vet QB they want for the next season and half...
Knowing Jim Harbaugh and what he looks for, I unfortunately think Dex would be a part of it...
If we go small, which, again, I dislike, the more interesting idea would be Young and his rookie contract. But he looks like a major reclamation project.
I have always had a crush on Field with his immense physical gifts. I would bet we could acquire him on a modest deal.
There is NFW the Chargers are moving off Herbert.
Sign Winston and draft a QB
The Giants just didn't love McCarthy or Penix more than Nabers and believing in McCarthy or Penix based on some concerns that either would be echelon QBs in NFL.
NYG needs to draft a QB.
If the Giants wanted Penix, they would have drafted him at 6 when they had the opportunity.
They didn’t want him then, and they’re not going to trade a top 10 pick for him either.
I like it!
You mean on BBI or the Giants? LOL
Preference, in order:
1) Stafford
2) Jameis
3) Carr
No interest in Murray with his contract and lack of success so far.
Geno is older and not getting better.
Herbert is obviously the best of the choices but I don't see LAC moving off him unless he's pushing it. He is an odd fit in LAC with Greg Roman but he is playing well despite nothing at TE and WR.
Best bet is to, cheaply, sign a vet (no rapists) and draft QB in the 1st (if not 1st rounder, use ammo to trade up late in the 1st to have the fifth year guaranteed.
Quote:
Id trade next year's first for Penix right now.
I like it!
I despise it. Hell no
And no, I don't want him.
Or Dave Kreig

Some years there are no guys
Before his injury in Carolina he was playing well.
Eli wasn't benched. He chose not to start.
No way. He is a year older and if the Giants draft in the top five which seems likely they will have a chance at a better and younger quarterback
