For anyone interested, latest aerial of Meadowlands Xanadu

BigBlue26 : 5/23/2008 10:09 am

Xanadu is such an eyesore, but you can our stadium rising up in the distance.

Last week MX rescheduled the Grand Opening date for mid-summer of 2009. MX anticipates completion of construction by the end of this year. They also anticipate tenants will start moving in by January 2009.

My God
Gene Too : 5/23/2008 10:09 am : link

Can everyone see the championship banner on the stadium?
Exit 172 : 5/23/2008 10:11 am : link
That beautiful banner makes my bus ride bearable every day.
really
J Dot : 5/23/2008 10:12 am : link
its like the designers/architects were watching Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas while coming up with the color scheme.
the bubble is down
Paulie Walnuts : 5/23/2008 10:15 am : link
and that place looks like a coal mine
What the hell is Xanadu?
Rick in Dallas : 5/23/2008 10:15 am : link
It's ugly..

Exit 172 : 5/23/2008 10:17 am : link
I think the view of the bubble is just obstructed.
they should
spike : 5/23/2008 10:18 am : link
have built a race track there to draw all the Nascar fans to NJ.
Blame the Bergen County officials
BigBlue26 : 5/23/2008 10:19 am : link
They thought the color scheme would catch people's attention and make them unable to resist turning into the complex to check it out. I nearly puked in that meeting...
That is the fugliest building ever

He's Not Here : 5/23/2008 10:28 am : link
or does it look like there are a bunch of people in the front giants parking lot?
..
Named Later : 5/23/2008 10:35 am : link

Those are cars....note the scale of the cars on the Turnpike.

What is that long ramp-like strucure?
old timer : 5/23/2008 10:37 am : link
What a mess.
I have a stupid question
Enzo : 5/23/2008 10:37 am : link
does Xanadu have its own dedicated parking lot?
Comparing to the size of the cars in that picture,
NorwoodWideRight : 5/23/2008 10:39 am : link
the ski slope is much bigger than I thought. It's humongous!
My old man is an iron worker and foreman
NorwoodWideRight : 5/23/2008 10:43 am : link
of a team that just finished work on Xanadu. The workmen had to go for constant blood tests. My father had high levels of arsenic in his bloodstream.

Eric, that Wiki link isn't completely up to date
BigBlue26 : 5/23/2008 11:01 am : link
Some of those attractions were shit canned and replaced with others.

Parking, btw, is going to be a nightmare.

Bergen Community College is also putting a satelitte campus right in between Xanadu and our stadium.
What an abomination
Go Terps : 5/23/2008 11:03 am : link
I ripped it to pieces in a project I did for a Land Use and Transportation class a couple years ago. Just an awful idea, and ugly to boot.
That South of the Border Reference Made Me Laugh
OntheRoad : 5/23/2008 11:04 am : link
"Pedro" even has a sign a mile down the road ("You missed it -- go back!")

Have you ever been in that place? It's like a little city. Rarely does something that tacky generate enough money to build something on that scale.
Just read the wiki,
Jim in Forest Hills : 5/23/2008 11:05 am : link
Xanadu sounds fun. Indoor ski slope? Fishing ponds? I'll definitely check it out.
Looks like a covered flea market

are they gonna sell Fireworks
Paulie Walnuts : 5/23/2008 12:38 pm : link
at Xanadu?

that would be cool

get me a gross of M-80's
Xanadu really looks like
JeremyShockey : 5/23/2008 12:51 pm : link
someone ate a ton of cotton candy while drinking and puked their guts out
It really is
GutterNYG : 5/23/2008 1:05 pm : link
Such an ugly looking thing. How they decided to construct it that way with those colors is just beyond me.
Does anyone know the reason why they can't fill in that area of marsh
Elisha10 : 5/23/2008 1:11 pm : link
on the west side of the stadium to make more parking lots. Couldn't they have done that instead of the off sight parking lots.
I was thinking the same thing
Paulie Walnuts : 5/23/2008 1:12 pm : link
more parking
also did they ever think
Paulie Walnuts : 5/23/2008 1:13 pm : link
of widening RT 3?
Elisha
BigBlue26 : 5/23/2008 1:15 pm : link
Major environmental permitting issues; that's why.
They need a much bigger road
Phil in LA : 5/23/2008 1:15 pm : link
and possibly a fence between the Giants stuff and the Xanadu crap.
I understand there are environmental issues, but we still managed
Elisha10 : 5/23/2008 1:19 pm : link
to fill in where the sports complex is, so why not a little more in the back there to make parking easier. It is not like it is a rain forrest, its a polluted swamp and there is plenty of remaining swamp in between the stadium and Newark.
Because the Meadowlands are protected environmentally
BigBlue26 : 5/23/2008 1:24 pm : link
sensitive areas. All the mitigation that can be done has been done.
omg
yankees78 : 5/23/2008 1:24 pm : link
that Xanadu crap reminds me of vomit..
It also makes me wanna vomit. Blah
BigBlue26
Enzo : 5/23/2008 1:31 pm : link
can we assume the area was not protected in the 70's when the complex was built?
Enzo
BigBlue26 : 5/23/2008 1:38 pm : link
In the 70s, environmental regulations hardly existed period. Now the NJDEP is all over everything and the Meadowlands Commission is directly repsonsible for the whole stadium area.

Shit, our firm had to have snake tunnels designed for the Parkway widening project so the Pine Snakes could still cross the highway. You don't even want to know what that cost taxpayers between the T&E Studies and the Tunnel Design.

On the link below you can read the environmental/permitting issues associated with the new stadium, and that is being built on already used Meadowlands property.

of the one word movie review Gene Shalitt gave the movie of the same name. "Xanadu?" Xanadon't!"
the best part of that picture...
tyleraimee : 5/23/2008 2:00 pm : link
is seeing the new stadium being built.
You also need to imagine

the giant Pepsi-logo ferris wheel in the foreground.

Wow
Frolls : 5/23/2008 3:38 pm : link
That is so New Jersey!
As for South of the Border
lalalalala : 5/23/2008 3:52 pm : link

has anyone *ever* gone past when it's fully operational? Every time I drive past it looks like a ghost town with maybe 3 or 4 things open. The next time I see that roller coaster moving will be the first, and I've been by pretty much every day of the week, every time of the year.

To keep this on topic so no one bitches about it, the stadium is coming along pretty well.
it looks like some nasty flea market
dvb : 5/24/2008 9:07 am : link
who the hell designed that ugliness?
have to admit I'm not crazy about the new stadium design either
dvb : 5/24/2008 9:21 am : link
Call me old fashioned, but to me, certain types of architecture are timeless. Others look like Shea Stadium. Soldier stadium will look impressive 40 years from now, the new Meadowlands stadium already looks like a big shiny tin can.
I'd have loved a stadium
Go Terps : 5/24/2008 1:29 pm : link
with either one or even two open (or partially open) ends. The view of the NYC skyline would have been great...though I am not sure if that pile of shit Xanadu is in the way.

Now I know that NYC isn't nearly as close to the stadium as these are to their respective cities, but the point is that the overall ambiance is vastly improved by simply incorporating the surrounding environment.

I pass Xanadu
ChathamMark : 5/24/2008 2:33 pm : link
on the NJ Turnpike every day. It is the ugliest structure I have ever seen in my freakin life...
Thank you Xanadu...
x meadowlander : 5/24/2008 2:38 pm : link
...for adding to the justification of my move out of that neck of the woods 15 years ago.

Love to visit, but I'll be damned if I ever live in that $hithole state again.
Wikipedia agrees that it looks like crap;
Darren in TR : 5/24/2008 5:24 pm : link
"As the current construction on the exterior facade was built, there were several complaints from both officials and residents about its garish exterior, which contains blue-and-white and orange-and-red panels. It has been compared to insulation and even the shipping crates on the docks along the Hudson River. Controversy has also developed over the Pepsi Globe's appearance and that it will obstruct nearby residents views of New York City.[5]"
