I think Gettleman was the Pro Personnel guy only.

The Giants today announced that Marc Ross has received a new title, Vice President of Player Evaluation. He had been the Director of College Scouting.

“Marc has done an outstanding job of running our college scouting and the draft, and we wanted to give him a title that reflected that,” said Giants general manager Jerry Reese. “He will continue to do that, but I also want him to work on some special projects in pro personnel along with pro personnel director Ken Sternfeld.”
I could be wrong

But this may be a new position created by the front office. Simply preparing Ross for a GM job...here or around the league.

Again...guess on my end
yes

I believe it is a new position.
This is a new position.

I don't remember this positional title on the Giants' official website regarding the front office. Did they add an Assistant yet to Ken Sternfeld?

Eric, any idea where Chris Mara fits in all

I'm not sure of the dynamic at work there. Obviously Chris has a lofty sounding position title.
thanks Eric

Andrea Wagner it is.
We do this at my work

When someone has done a great job but there is no open place to promote them, we give them a fancier title and a raise.

There are no openings above you, but we value your contributions to the team and want to do something to show you this (and keep you in blue).

Good for him. I'm not going to pretend to know everything about our front office, but he's apparently been a very big part of our success.
hmm

One by one, Woody, Sam and Carla go into Rebecca's office asking for a raise. All three come out of her office only with superficial new titles.
How can people be so sure that it is not an actual promotion
Sneakers O'toole : 5/30/2013 11:35 pm : link
as opposed to just a title as some here suggest?
The statement
Sneakers O'toole : 5/30/2013 11:37 pm : link
seems to make it clear that his responsibilities will be greater and involve the pro player side of it.
Why would

they promote or create a new title for him? Does he have other options ? He was touted as shoe in for a GM vacancy last year but there was no interest. Mara is the one behind the scenes on player evaluation.
When a person tells the Jets...

he doesn't even want to interview for their GM job, which is a huge promotion, and a promotion where there is no U-Haul truck, or finding good schools involved, that tells you something.

For the Giants, it tells you something you have take very serious notice of, and plan accordingly for that person's and organization's future.

Solid Giants move.
interesting

I've said several times in the past that I am not yet sold on Ross.

Actually, I wanted to reserve judgement on him until he had been around long enough to evaluate his work. Interestingly in the intervening years I have not grown any closer to a conclusion on Ross. I guess if push came to shove I would label him excruciatingly average. A JAG.

Has anyone else noticed the perceptible, even if not precipitous drop in the quality of our drafts since Ross has been running them?

Before anyone admonishes me, I know the drafts since Ross has been here haven't exactly been considered chock full of talent, but at some point all I am really concerned with is results....
