Running back situation

blueblood'11 : 9/2/2013 11:38 am
It looks like there are a lot of available guys out there to pick from to try and help bolster it from an experience standpoint. I really have a hard time believing the Giants will go into Dallas with the status quo. Brandon Jacobs name keeps coming up and I would not be surprised if they would take a flier on him. But that remains to be seen.

How shocked would you all be if the Giants did nothing at this point and went with what they have? If they don't do something by mid week then it would seem pretty clear they are going to go with the status quo. And given Coughlin's track record I would find that hard to believe given how little trust he puts in untested players. And given the fact it's Eli's ass that is on the line.
If they need pass blocking on 3rd down
PEEJ : 9/2/2013 11:43 am : link
they can use Hynoski/Pascoe in a pinch. no running threat, but they could catch a swing pass, if needed

I think Coughlin will go with what he has. And if we do end up signing a veteran at some pooint, I don't think it will be Jacobs.
You have to remember that it isn't just about physically being able

to pass block but knowing the schemes. A RB that comes in here will still be understanding the offense by the time Brown gets back. Is it worth it? Jacobs makes sense since he knows the offense. But does that make up for his declining physical skills?
robbie makes sense to me in that he can block
Blue Blood : 9/2/2013 11:51 am : link
but if he isnt a threat to do anything else.. kind of pointless
If they wanted a verteran
Mike in Boston : 9/2/2013 11:56 am : link
They could have kept Torrain over Scott

They didn't.

I suspect they rely on Wilson with an occasional breather from Cox or Scott until Brown gets back.
IMO, the Giants will go to Dallas as is...
M.S. : 9/2/2013 11:58 am : link
...and you will see David Wilson in there when they pass. Pulling David Wilson for another backfield blocker when they pass is really bad news and puts us on the way to defeat. We SHOULD NOT be telegraphing when we pass. David Wilson will stay in the game quite a lot for two reasons:

(1) To increase the odds that he breaks a few big ones;
(2) To keep the defense honest so they can't guess what we're going to do.
I think a lot of people forget how good of a receiver Hyno can be.
robbieballs2003 : 9/2/2013 12:03 pm : link
The question becomes, is Hyno ready for game 1.

blueblood'11 : 9/2/2013 12:28 pm : link
That's a good point about Hyno.
I haven't been happy with the Giants RB squad . . . .

for a couple of years. Much of that has been because of injuries (Bradshaw) or being unable to stay healthy (Brown) and Jacobs not really ever having been a reliable short yardage back.

Wilson is a unique talent, and I like Cox much more than I thought I would, but he's a rookie and doesn't look to fit the role of a short yardage back anyway.

For several years the biggest problem for the Giants' offense has been consistency. And the biggest part of that problem has been an inability to convert on short yardage. If I'm crazy, you can add Coughlin to the list because he's said the same thing. And while the OL has been and is a significant part of the problem, there are backs who have a knack for short yardage. They can both make the best of bad blocking and exploit good blocking. Some them have this skill as part of a feature back skill set, but many of them have this as their only primary skill. The Giants have needed one for a long time, and now need one more than ever.

These types of back can usually be found in the mid to late part of the draft. But you have to want one. And for whatever reason it seems the F.O. doesn't value backs that fit this profile. And while a pick like Nassib is great value, and will likely be valuable down the road, how I wish the Giants could have picked up a short yardage specialist instead so they could play better football THIS year.

I don't know how you rely on Brown to come back....can they even wait 4-6-8 weeks? What if one of the three get dinged?
Would I be shocked if they do nothing?
UberAlias : 9/2/2013 12:36 pm : link
No. It's what I expect them to do.
Get ready for a steady dose of Scott and Cox. If nothing is done Scott
fredgbrown : 9/2/2013 12:45 pm : link
has a great opportunity to do something. Lets hope he doesn't screw it up.
Brown is very injury prone.
Ira : 9/2/2013 12:48 pm : link
Even when he does come back from this injury, something else could easily go wrong.
I have ZERO faith in Scott.
TC : 9/2/2013 1:01 pm : link
I believe he's often been dinged both in school and here, and goes down much too easily. He's just not a tough guy.

Cox looks good, but he doesn't look like a tough inside runner. Very nice acceleration and speed to the outside however. He may have some success on plays inside if they're well blocked.
On Brown,
TC : 9/2/2013 1:04 pm : link
regardless of his injury problems which should make him a non-starter by itself, he looked to me to running much more tentatively this year than last. Maybe being constantly on IR will do that to you.
David Wilson
Zig in CT : 9/2/2013 1:24 pm : link
is gonna done blowed up.
I would not be surprised if they leaned on the TEs more for pass pro
BSIMatt : 9/2/2013 1:51 pm : link
In obvious passing situations, Hynoski is obviously the first option coming in for a RB, but they have used TEs in the backfield next to Eli for pass pro in the past. It gives them a bigger matchup against a defensive end and also a receiving threat should they need to release as a safety valve.
Hey Zig
Gman11 : 9/2/2013 4:27 pm : link
Can you translate that into English?
David Wilson
Gman11 : 9/2/2013 4:28 pm : link
on the field on 3rd down should be used on screens and wheel routes out of the backfield. You complete a few passes to him in the flat and the LBs will have to think twice about blitzing.
I don't think that we sign a vet until
Bobby Epps : 9/2/2013 4:32 pm : link
after the 1st game. From that point on the vets get paid on a game-by-game basis and not the full seasonal salary.
You guys , are SO WRONG.

Sorry for the loopy and obtuse reference. Although I have concerns about our offensive line, I can see Wilson having an explosive impact. I`m even more sorry to have expressed it in a style of a former cowboy - Emmitt Smith. "He done blowed up". LOL.

As much as I hate to even bring Smith (have to give him his due), I was thinking of the time that Smith came in and ripped off a long run real early in the game and ripped our hearts out. I`m hoping that Wilson can do the same thing with a couple /few bursts.

As a positive aside about the Smith reference, I was trying to find his exact quote on google, I kept running into articles about his termination from an analyst gig with references to his contract getting blowed up and being debacled - another description he had about a Patriots loss. LMFAO!!!
