All Time Clutch QB's

PaulN : 11/16/2013 4:49 pm
What player is more clutch in your opinion. Eli or Steve Young? Unreal the hatred against Eli and the Giants. NFL network has Young rated at 5th all time, Eli not in the top 10. I should have known better to watch this garbage. But since I am pissed, I might as well pass it on. LOL!

I do want to point out that Young

did have a Hall of Fame WR in Rice and a close to HOF wr in Owens (if he just shut his mouth and played) to throw to. Eli has good wr but none of them are HOF at this point.

He's a terrible analyst who still has a monkey on his back. Fucking clown.
Young is IMO overrated
FStubbs : 11/16/2013 5:03 pm : link
Young also had Ricky Watters and later Garrison Hearst running the ball. Jacobs/Bradshaw were a good tandem but clearly Young had the edge. Young also had Brent Jones at TE and Eli had Kevin Boss/Jake Ballard.

Young also had the advantage of playing in a weak NFC where only the Cowboys were really any good - the old 80s powers had gotten too old (Giants, Skins, Bears, Vikings) and the Packers hadn't quite put it together yet.

Also, it wasn't until the mid-late 90s where teams started scheming against the West Coast Offense, so Young had a scheme advantage.

Finally, that title Steve Young won deserves an asterisk, because the 49ers were caught cheating the salary cap that year. If we want to call the Patriots cheaters, that team cheated too.

To be honest - IMO Steve Young is one of the more overrated players in NFL History.
Here's what someone should ask...
FStubbs : 11/16/2013 5:05 pm : link
Giants at Niners, 2 years ago. Switch Eli for Steve Young. Do they really think Steve Young takes the punishment Eli took and comes out of there with a win?
My all-time clutch QBs(in no particular order)

That is a good list, can't argue with any of them.
Joe Montana's backup will always be that whiny guy to me
Optimus-NY : 11/16/2013 6:14 pm : link
who's standing on the sideline trying to force his way into the game. He still can't shine Joe's shoes.
Actually, Steve Young is only a better runner
Dry Lightning : 11/16/2013 6:45 pm : link
There is no aspect of Steve Young's game that is even in the same galaxy as Eli. Steve Young is extremely overrated. Eli is extremely underrated.
Steve Young was the Aaron Rodgers of his day

great player, but if there is a chink in their armor it's the "clutch" aspect. Young's definitely not in my Top 5 for all-time clutch QBs in my book.

Eli's clutch performance hasn't been there this year but over his career he has been incredible. 2011 is the single clutchest season for an NFL QB ever.
Young was an incredibly accurate QB.
Geeman : 11/16/2013 7:51 pm : link
He deserved to be in the HOF. He unfortunately lost a lot of years behind Montana.
Also Eli has had receivers every bit as talented as what Young had.
Eli hasn't had HOFers... But he's always had a core of very good wides to work with.
Plax, Toomer, Shockey, Nicks, Mario, Smith,Randle, Cruz.
Young had Rice, and TO.
Give me that group over the course of my career anytime over 2 guys even if they are HOFers.
In '93 playoff game
gmenatlarge : 11/16/2013 9:15 pm : link
Young threw 2 int's and I couldn't help but think that they had Montana sitting on the bench and how tempting it would have been to have him pull out the win. But Seifert wanted to win with his guy- Young.

You really think Eli is the second most clutch qb in NFL history? Really??

I'm not following. You didn't start the post. What are you referring to?
Eli as an all-time clutch QB
FStubbs : 11/16/2013 11:04 pm : link
Isn't as far fetched as you might think. He did engineer the most clutch drive in the history of the NFL, after all. (The drive that beat the invincible 18-0 Patriots). Only time in NFL championship history a team had to drive the length of a field for a TD with limited time, and a FG wouldn't do.

If not - certainly he's far more clutch than Steve Young was.
Not thread starter, post starter
Big Blue '56 : 11/16/2013 11:29 pm : link
The first line of my 5:07 post..I said, "in no particular order."

So I wasn't giving Eli the second spot per se
All those guys on the NFLN Top 10 list...
JB in NJ : 11/16/2013 11:35 pm : link
played on teams that were consistently in the playoffs. That's a huge plus.

Hell, you could make an argument for Marino not being on the list. Great QB, no doubt, but was he really an especially clutch QB? Moreso than Peyton, who's not even on the list either?
Young could have been more clutch
NINEster : 11/17/2013 12:01 am : link
but was still great.

He could spread the ball around the field short/intermediate/deep and could run.

Eli played in the parity era where defenses couldn't hit. Young played in an era of #1/2 NFC seed won it all and defenses kept the hall of fame rice in relative check. You needed a premier RB back then to go far in playoffs.

Young was a regular season monster who was consistent from his second year starting to the very end.

Eli being so inconsistent makes it hard to take him seriously despite some great postseason runs.

I doubt he could have won more SBs than young if he played in sf in the '90s. Probably not even one. The patriots had nothing on those juggernaut cowboy/packer teams.

And that salary cap infraction year was '98 not '94. And is it cheating if you have nothing to show for it? (super bowls)

Eli's inconsistency
Blue Blood : 11/17/2013 12:18 am : link
is what keeps him off everyones list.
Wait, is this top 10 list on 'clutch QBs'?
SanFranGiantsFan : 11/17/2013 7:51 am : link
If so, not having Eli on the list makes an entire mockery of the show.
Bloodman,
Big Blue '56 : 11/17/2013 8:07 am : link
this is supposedly about clutch, NOT inconsistency
Ex qbs seem to be really critical of Eli's play?
Joey from GlenCove : 11/17/2013 8:58 am : link
I always wonder why:

Young
Warner
Simms

Maybe only aikman gives him his due
its Otto Graham
Giants : 11/17/2013 11:34 am : link
nobody else is even close
Maybe if Eli was not so damn
AnnapolisMike : 11/17/2013 12:42 pm : link
inconsistent at times...he would not have had to mount as many comebacks.

Eli's the guy I want in the playoffs...but there are plenty of other QB's I would rather have during the regular season.

The one thing with Eli...he has the perfect temperament to play in NY. Kinda wonder if it is getting to him this year?

QBs you want with 2 min
Fred in Atlanta : 11/17/2013 2:22 pm : link
in championship game.

Unites
Montana
Eli
Brady
Elway

TO is going to get in, he's not a "close to HOF" wr.
