um, per my 12:52, you do realize TC has never had the benefit of keeping his team in tact for many years a la Tuna pre-FA, yes? And as Phil mentioned, pre-salary cap as well

but that stretch from 85-90 included two 10 win seasons, as well as 12/13/14 win seasons. That was some stretch. I also liked how tough a place Giants Stadium became for visitors under Parcells. You didn't come into our house and push us around. Take out the fluky '87 season with the scabs and that was some godamn run.
Dude, c'mon.
Both coaches are great
djm : 6/10/2014 1:32 pm : link
And both don't need any defending on here other than parcells not playing nice with ownership/mgmt for very long. But that was just tuna's personality.

2005-2011 wasn't exactly chopped liver. 11 win season, two 10 win seasons, a 12 win season and the 9 win season in 2011 that turned into a Super Bowl title... Glorious run. The 8 win season in 06 is forgivable as that team got rocked with injuries. 2009 and 2013 were coughlin's worst here. He made up for 09 let's hope he makes up for 2013...

The new Halas and Hunt trophies are horrible. They look like cheap pieces of junk.

Great picture, though. And Coughlin has Parcells beat with total rings.

But Parcells' Giants were clearly superior to Coughlin's Giants. That's just reality.

they were Parcells and Bellicheck's Giants. Those teams were built around great defenses and BB was a major reason for that.
Great pic!!!
Wonderphil11 : 6/10/2014 2:03 pm : link
As far as comparing BP's teams to TC's, it's apples and oranges...soooo many different variables that it makes it impossible to point to one or the other.
Apparently Parcells spokes to the team

Randy not sure what point you were trying to make there, but I stand by it. I love Coughlin and this era, but it's bizarre to me how mediocre we have been at home under him. I know it doesn't matter as long as you win. Fifty Six your point is a fair one, although lets not act like Coughlin's Giants teams have been ripped apart by free agency. In fact one could argue free agency has helped him(Mckenzie, Plax, Pierce, Rolle etc...)more than hurt him. I don't want to turn this into Coughlin bashing because like I said I love what the guy has done here. Just saying that in my lifetime we have had no more dominant era of Giant's football than those years of '85-90.
Real nice!

Make JR hit FA and next years draft early and often on the D side and make another SB era.

That Philly case needs a Geno's Steak and Cheese sub to complete their claim to fame.

It's great to be a Giants fan.

Gah! Can't view it

Very true, but another way to look at it is that Parcells was much better at choosing his DC.

pretty damn good era. Of course seeing as I was born in '68 can't really pull up any memories of that one. ahhh who cares the fact that we have all these era's to talk about as fans make us one pretty damn lucky group!

The 1934 Ed Thorpe Trophy from The Sneakers Game is in Canton at the HOF. I took a picture of it when I was there, I'll see if I can dig it up and post it here.

The ones from 1938 & 1956 should certainly be displayed next to those Lombardi Trophies though.
The way the NFL disregards pre-SB championships
mac attack : 6/10/2014 2:46 pm : link
is sad and unfortunate.

The league was established during the early years and made the game great through the 40's and 50's yet none of those championships seem to matter to anyone in the NFL nor to any fans. I argue all the time that the Giants have 8 championships.

Agreed, and truth is, as much fun as it is to make fun of the Eagles for never winning a Super Bowl, they did win 3 NFL Championships.

The last one being during the Eisenhower administration:)

Who continue to try and knock Parcells about his era with comments like, it was easier before the salary cap and free agency need to remember if it was so easy, why then was it so long before Parcells and Young got here that we SUCKED, since it was so easy, as some like to say.

Also, if it was indeed so easy, then it was equally easy for the competition, and to even compare the garbage teams of this era to the teams like the 49rs, Redskins, Cowboys and Bears from that era, if we are having a hard time to remember, let me remind you then.

It was just as hard back then to crack the upper echelon of the NFL, back then when the competition also did not have free agency or the salary cap to deal with

There was nothing EASY, about that run, it was the best football era the Giants ever had, and Bill Parcells was a huge part of that. Great coaches would be great coaches in any era, there is no need to take anything away from Parcells because of the era he came from. The rosters you played against were way better then todays rosters, so it all evens out in my view.
Agreed about the forgotten pre-Super Bowl era.

The fact that Bart Starr is the only QB to ever lead a time to five titles was news to me until a few years ago. Bradshaw and Montana are the gold standard with four SBs - you never hear a word about Starr having five titles. It's really too bad.

the Parcells/Young accomplishments. You are correct about how long it took us to get it going again(from 1964 on)..That said, the only point(my only point anyway) is that the pre-FA and no salary cap era allowed teams to build true dynasties with their squads in tact..Think of Lombardi, Noll, Madden, Gibbs, Walsh, Parcells and Ditka(for awhile) as examples..

The brand of football during those eras was definitely better imv, but I believe that in this era of parity, FA, salary cap, winning it all more than once is infinitely harder. Amazing what Belichick has done since 1999..

Before TC came here, my only prayer at noght was that Tuna would return to us as he was my all-time favorite coach of any sport in any era..TC has now nudged him into 2nd place in my heart..:)

I have to say the Parcells era was my favorite. Much as I like some of todays Giants, LT, Simms, Bavaro, Marshall, Martin, Burt, etc. Damn, what a group!
