Now, to be fair, he clearly hasn't lived up to expectations.
My opinion is that he came in cocky, had trouble picking up aspects of the playbook (blitz pick-up especially) and then had ball security issues that made him very unpopular with TC and really hurt his confidence.
As much as any position in football, RB is all about ability. Wilson has it in spades. IMO, he just needs to get to the point where he just plays instead of thinks. He's a smart kid - it should be by now.
A final thought (guess). Wilson had a neck issue so bad, it required fusion to repair. It is common for such injuries (herniations) to cause arm/hand weakness. That could have contributed to his fumbling problem.

He has to hold onto the ball and he has to learn to protect Eli.....
If fully healed his neck should be stronger than yours or mine. I was always worried about him coming back too soon resulting in injury. As long as the fuse is beyond the 100% point, further injury risk is the same as anyone without that injury.
