LIke everyone I am sure, I was hoping he could play without further injury. And everyone gets those burners or stingers, but for a guy with a questionable back its serious. So tough for him or any other professional athlete to walk away from a dream. Especially a guy so talented as he is, and so early in his career. Damned shame. I hope it doesn't end his career, and on the other hand I hope it does if playing could cause him serious harm. More likely serious harm that is, compared to your average NFL player.
Not what anyone wanted to hear at all. Even if the docs clear him for the regular season, you have to think this is going to be an ongoing issue and will surely be in the back of Wilson's mind going forward.
It's a damn shame too because while I'm looking forward to seeing Jennings and Williams, the Giants don't have another back that can do what Wilson does.
Being worried over a guy with Wilson's neck injury history picking up
if only because of the depth at RB and the expectation that Wilson was going to come along slowly with his injury. I hope RR can get back on the field quickly.
So what makes most burners non-issues and others persistent problems? Any number of things, from a history of neck injuries -- something just about anyone who ever played even high school football, never mind in the NFL, has without knowing about it -- to recurring traumas in the area.
"Generally it goes away in seconds," said Dr. Craig Levitz, a sports medicine specialist who is chief of orthopedic surgery at South Nassau Community Hospital and was co-author of a study on burners in pro football players that was published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine in 1997. "Most of the time with a first burner, the symptoms are almost gone by the time a trainer gets over to look at the player on the bench. It's generally not a big deal."
When the symptoms don't go away, though, as in Tuck's and Baas' cases, "that's when we worry," Levitz said. "Is this a bigger deal?"
Tuck has said repeatedly that he does not have a bulging or herniated disc in his neck, the kind of injury that forced friend and teammate Mathias Kiwanuka to spend most of the 2010 season on injured reserve. It could be that he and Baas simply have a chronic stinger.
The more times a player gets the injury, the more susceptible he becomes, Levitz said -- much like a concussion. He said the general rule is that a player can return to action once the symptoms go away on the first stinger. On a second stinger, a player should rest twice as long as it takes for the symptoms to clear.
"Some doctors, not myself, but some doctors would argue that if he has a third burner, he should be done for the year," Levitz said. "You're sitting at home as a fan and you're like, 'What are they doing? The guy has a stinger? I have one of those, get back in there!' But if it's a recurring stinger, then you have to be much more cautious."
The Giants are doing just that with both players. There is some consideration to resting Tuck for another few weeks, using the bye as a built-in rest, and hoping he can stay healthy for the rest of the season.
The good news, Levitz said, is that it is very rare for a player to suffer permanent damage from a burner or a stinger. What is not rare is the stinger itself. He said that during the course of a football season, more than 50 percent of players suffer at least one of them. In more than 90 percent of those cases, the player is back on the field within minutes. Link - ( New Window )
anyone can get a neck burner. The question remains was there any structural damage to the neck this time around...if not, he's fine and will move forward. IF anything this could be a positive IF there was no damage done.
Relax. Wait for the official diagnosis. IF it's only a burner and no real damage was done, Wilson will be back on the field in a week or so....maybe less.

NYG RB David Wilson will undergo tests after suffering what Tom Coughlin called a "burner." I'm told NYG "will be careful" w/him.

Doesn't mean anything yet, because the #Giants weren't going to take any chances with Wilson/neck area. But, obviously, bracing for bad news

by doctors (whatever that means), I find it difficult to imagine that someone who has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis (as David Wilson has) and survived serious neck surgery (is there any other kind?) can make a rational decision to play football at any level, let alone the NFL. I recognize that 23 year-old kids think they are immortal and bullet-proof ... but somewhere along the line, there has to be an adult in the room who can explain the extraordinary risks. Perhaps Eli should have David Wilson talk with his (Eli's) brother, Cooper.

How long until somebody freaks out because David Wilson went to the hospital, for special surgery.
David Wilson, the last play I saw him in before he walked off the field, fumbled on a swing route. From what I saw, Wilson looked to catch the ball and then attempt to tip-toe down the sideline. As he reached forward for more yards, he just basically dropped the ball. Some said they saw Spencer Adkins punch it out, but I saw him drop it. Either way, it was a fumble.
Maybe he's been getting ball security tips from Mario.
I hope he considers retiring. Life is too short and neck injuries are nothing to fool around with. He has his entire life ahead of him to think about and the bottom line is football is just a game, his health and life with his family is much more important.
I did a lot of damage to my back and neck when I was younger. Sure when younger I could always tough it out and things would heal enough to always keep at it. Now that I am older and all that damage I did has progressed I live with daily pain, I can't even get down on the floor to play with so I have a different perspective from what was is important and where I place priority on ones health and well being. My opinion about his thinking about retiring is not about the prognosis of if he can get through the next few seasons or not but more about his quality of life when he is older.
I'd bet money on it. I don't think hel be great but he should at least solidify the position for a couple of years. His age (late 20s) is actually a good thing because he's matured and really seems to have learned how to take care of his body. The whole gluten free diet thing...He's older but far from worn out. That's just what this offense needs.
And then there's the rookie from BC.... Wilson would be a nice addition but the giants went into this off season knowing that they couldn't count on Wilson and that's even if he stayed healthy.
I was never sold on Wilson contributing this year and always felt a contribution from him would be an icing on the cake. Giants were wise to sign Jennings and draft that bruiser out of BC. If wilson is done hopefully the Giants can find a promising young PS, waiver, or a solid vet to sign.
Really this offense needs solid play out of its line and jennings to perform as advertised a long with steady progression from the BC kid.
Demonstrably life shortening for those who play it at the NFL level. Gladiators in a real sense. With real consequences.
Still, I'd rather not see an on-field tradgedy either at the stadium or on my television.
Whatever happens with Wilson, I'll always worry about him. As a fan I hope he continues to play, but if he does I will pray for his health and well being.

Steve.. alls I'm saying is every situation is different and every person heals/responds to injuries in their own way. We just don't have enough information on Wilson right now to really know what he should or shouldn't do and really, at the end of the day, it's his decision no matter what. Hopefully the news will be positive and if it's not, he'll do whatever keeps his best interests in mind in the future.
and I think us fans need to have that same mindset, we will get nothing out of him, and if we do, it is a fantastic bonus. I just hope, as a human being, he leaves this sport, whether now or later, healthy.

Agree. I do hope for the best, that this is just precautionary, but there is at least a slightly ominous tone to what we've heard. Perhaps that is just us as fans being a little paranoid, but he has spinal stenosis, and has had serious neck surgery.
understand Wilson's injury and what the long-term prognosis is. I realize every case is different, but at his age its obvious the doctors don't think he's at any more risk than anyone else.
I've said it countless times, fusion in the next is general successful, but usually isn't considered 100% for 8-12 months. He was likely cleared based on having zero symptoms and the bone looking fully healed.
However, PUPing him (and JPP) is something I thought would have been an absolute given. An extra 6 weeks is massive for these types of injuries.
In any case, I can't see how anyone can criticize Wilson for returning. If you took an MRI of every BBIers neck, I'm willing to bet atleast 1/3 have stenosis and/or some sort of disc degeneration. Its an incredibly common injury and I bet an even higher percentage of NFL players have it.
@ProFootballDoc: Medically speaking, a true "burner" does NOT involve neck. Hope that is case for @4stillRunning @Giants coming off cervical spine fusion.
and more concerned about how Wilson is going to react to it. I love the kid, but he hasn't actually sown ice water running through his veins yet. Chances are solid this really is just a burner considering he was medically cleared, but how would any young man react to a painful neck injury in his first couple workouts after major neck surgery?
Who knows... maybe this will contribute to him running more cautiously, and subsequently, with better vision, but part of his upside his his ability to explode through the hole. I'm hoping he learns to run with better precision without becoming tentative and indecisive.
I don't know how he's going to react to this particular set back, but as mentioned, he's shown a propensity to becoming demoralized and playing like it.
There are few players I'm rooting for more than Wilson (one was Hill). Really hope this works out for him/us.
Coughlin does sound concerned about Wilson, says they'll wait for what the doctor says. #Giants
Posts like above = facepalm
Prob true. The neck can only take so much punishment.
Fail.
It's a damn shame too because while I'm looking forward to seeing Jennings and Williams, the Giants don't have another back that can do what Wilson does.
Just have to hope and pray..

I don't see how this type of injury, given his history, means anything other than the end of David Wilson's career.

So Randle and Wilson aren't important players? You know nothing about how serious or not serious Randle's injury is.
That is good news. Seems like Donnell is the one from that group that is mentioned the most thus far...

If randle was serious would he be on the field
Duh?
Also Coughlin said he was a bit sore so they held him back

Two TDs for Donnell, one each for Davis and Robinson.

He may not be the second coming of Mark Bavaro, but if he turns out to be as good as Jake Ballard, I'll be happy.

Should be noted that David Wilson's injury came in non-full-contact practice. Injury didn't occur on crunching hit. #Giants in shorts today
But a non connect drill and it just surfaces on its own...
I feel so bad for the kid.
there was contact, just not a crunching hit
How did David Wilson suffer a neck burner? He caught a shovel pass, turned upfield and, head down, ran into the back of Eric Herman. #nyg
But a non connect drill and it just surfaces on its own...
I feel so bad for the kid.
Hell I got a burner getting out of bed. He whacked his noodle into Herman's back - probably jammed his neck at just the right angle.
The precaution is appropriate to make sure the fusion didn't get displaced.

All Connor said was he didn't see him get hurt.
Again, see our injury updates today.
Jennings, while a good addition, is nothing special.....he will be 29, and while there is not a lot of mileage on him, he hasn't accomplished much....
Then what do you have? A rookie from last year that did nothing? Another rookie this year? A guy who was on the couch last year?
Williams
Cox
Hillis
Gaskins
Seems like plenty of bodies to me...
Really hoping he'll be ok. I know Deuce Deuce wants to be out there more than anything.
