It is a travesty he didn't make the Pro Bowl over AJ Green who played in 2 more games has 161 less yards and 5 less TDs.
Yes Jordy Nelson is a complete animal. He was a great college WR and he might be even better in the NFL then he was in college.
Spike - Randle is going to still start across from Beckham Jr with Cruz in the slot. Hopefully he can keep playing like he did last week. He should see a lot of loose coverage next year with those Cruz & OBJ on the field. I think he's going to have a very good season next year. His numbers outside of his TDs are solid this year and very good for a third WR. He has 65 catches for 780 yards and 3 TDs. If he can put up around 850 yards with a 12 yard average while improving his TD #s that would be tremendous and we could have one of the best offenses in the league.
Hopefully he can have something like 72 receptions for 864 yards and 7 TDs I would be very happy. If he could ever get his head on straight we could also possibly have 3 WRs with over 1000 yards.
I was this head over heels for a rookie. Honestly, not even JPP. He's just...unreal. Anyone read Chip Kelly's conference call today? For all I know it's been posted, I haven't been on all day. Anyway, the first time they played Kelly admitted Beckham was "very high" on the Eagles draft board. I guess someone pressed him today and he admitted that they actually had him as the #1 WR in the draft over Watkins and Evans. I really am stunned by what he's been able to do in the time he's done it especially considering all of the time he missed. I really don't think it's homer-ish to say he's arguably been the best rookie wideout since Randy Moss.
And if the insane talent isn't enough, he's a helluva competitor and by all accounts a solid young kid. Since the last SB my interest in football has waned a bit. I still never miss a game but I just didn't seem to live and die with the team each week the way I used to. Simply put I just wasn't as passionate about it. But in the midst of a shitty season that will probably end with the Giants picking in the top 10 that passion has been restored, and it's mostly because of 3 guys:
With the idea that there maybe something to glean from this chart aside from OBJ's awesomeness, something that may educate me a bit...
Some facts looking at the top 10 WRs on this chart:
Only 2 of the 10 were first round draft selections, OBJ at 12 and Dez Bryant at 24. From the other 8 guys 4 were 2nd round picks, 3 were 3rd round picks, and 1 was a late 6th round pick (Antonio Brown by the Steelers in 2010).
3/10 were Steelers' picks - Brown, Sanders, and Wallace - and besides Brown the others were late 3rd round picks at the 82nd and 84th overall slots. Please can we grab a WR talent evaluator or 2 from their organization? Even so both Wallace and Sanders left the Steelers after their rookie contracts!
The average draft slot of these 10 leaders was 68th ie early 3rd round. Taking the two 1st rounders out of the calculation, the average draft slot was 80th, and taking the "outliers" off the list (OBJ at 12 and Brown at 195) the average was 59th.
My take on the above is that a lot of very good WRs come into this league at the back end of the 2nd or early in the 3rd round.
Height isn't correlated to success: 3/10 are 6'2" or taller, 6/10 are 5'11" or shorter, and 1 is listed as 6' even.
40 yard dash speed is correlated to success: 4/10 ran 4.40 or less (blazing), 3/10 ran 4.46 or less (very fast), and the other 2 of the last 3 (Bryant and Nelson) ran 4.52 and 4.51 respectively and they are two of the 3 tallest guys.
All of them had good 10 yard splits at the combine of 1.56 seconds or less.
OBJ recorded a 1.56 10 yard split, at the upper end of this group, but he had trouble with his starts that Mayock commented on, related to the NFL forcing him to switch to unfamiliar shoes... Mayock also thought OBJ's 40 yd dash, a very good 4.43, was slower than expected too, he figured OBJ was really a sub-4.40 guy. As we know, many of his other combine tests were superlative: his 3 cone, 20 and 60 yard shuttles, and his VJ were all IIRC top 5 results.
What to take from these data? Maybe speed is really important, height not so much, and plenty of really good NFL WRs are drafted after the 1st round, and even after the 1st 2 rounds.
