What is taking a play off?

wgenesis123 : 6/7/2015 5:07 am
I hear this every year about players. when I played ball,. no matter what the sport I just could not imagine taking a play off. You could get tired and get your ass beat, but you would not stop trying and take the play off. The only time I really understand this would be a wide reciever who saves his best moves for when his number gets called. Is that taking a play off?
In wrestling they call it stalling.,

A wrestler does not try to improve his position to avoid being beat by his opponent or he is to tired to give the effort. It does not always translate well to football because sometimes a players job is simply don't get beat.
Not giving maximum effort

every play..For some it's pacing..For others? Laziness? Fatigue?
If you see one guy talking on his cell phone....

...while the other 10 guys are running around, it's a sure sign that he is taking the play off.
Does this

really need an explanation? You never did it, so that means you can't figure out what it is?
I see it as

a player making a lazy effort to do his part on a particular play. It happens so fast you usually only see it on replay.

It often happens when a player on one side of the field see the play going to the other side and he just stops putting in max effort as if it just doesn't matter.

I can't blame a player who is left in too long and just doesn't have the stamina to be effective on every play. That's a conditioning issue as opposed to a mental issue of laziness.

for some, it can be fatigue

Watch "America's Game: 1986 Giants"...Lawrence Taylor talks about how he basically didn't try to take Herschel Walker on his game-winning TD run in the season opener.
Where are those .gifs of Antonio Cromartie letting people blow past

Him? I think it was a playoff game.
Got one

Eric, can't find my copy of '86. Can you briefly tell us what LT said?
Montreal Man

He said he was tired and that he basically gave up on the play...he said he let Walker run right past him.

hakeem nicks not fighting at all for a jump ball for a full season especially against richard sherman, randy moss running at half speed when he's not getting enough balls thrown his way, etc etc. I can't even take a minute off in a meaningless basketball league I play in. I don't know how some of them do it but it happens.

It's hard to tell if Nicks took the plays off or was toast by that time. After the sad touchdown-less 2013 season, he never really produced again.
I have watched games where basically a whole defense looked

like they gave up,. they just kind of went through the motions. That and what you guys describe is quitting on the team to me. So than when a scouting report says a player in the draft takes plays off---its telling us he is a quitter. I don't know what to make of Eric's comment about LT. If LT was a quitter with the motor he brought, it makes that part of the scouting report meaningless.
