Tom Coughlin

September 11, 2015

Q: Beason didn’t get any better, I guess?

TC: No.

Q: Was it worse?

TC: He just didn’t get any better. Didn’t get to the point where he felt he could play, and play the way he would like to. And the medical people agreed.

Q: What’s the process with him going forward now?

TC: It’s like anything. If he’s going to get better, he’s going to get better. So hopefully, as fast as possible.

Q: What kind of predicament does that put you in at linebacker?

TC: We’ve prepared for that. We’ve had a preseason and a good full day yesterday with Unga in that position. So, I think a young guy, obviously who has not had that much experience in there, but he’ll give great effort.

Q: Any apprehension to start a rookie in that spot? Obviously the guy who makes the play calls and all that stuff.

TC: He’s done enough of that to assure that the communication will be done.

Q: How’s Cruz doing?

TC: He’s doing fine.

Q: We’re waiting for one day for you to tell us he’s running.

TC: Well he’s not. What can I do? What more can I tell you?

Q: In his case, again, it’s not that it’s worse, it’s the same?

TC: No, he’s getting better, he’s getting better. He’s improved, no doubt.

Q: You guys play so many games in so few days, is there a worry that this could go to Week 4?

TC: I really can’t comment on that. As soon as he’s ready to go, he’ll be on the field and practicing. Until that time, we’re all trying to figure out when exactly he’ll be ready.

Q: Where is Jasper Brinkley at right now? Does he know enough where he could step in?

TC: He obviously does not have a lot of time, but he’s learning the defensive system and he’s being able to communicate it. It may be that there would be some limitations if he was in there, but some things I’m sure he’ll know well enough to be able to communicate.

Q: We talked to Spags yesterday, he talked about the safety position and using all those guys. What do you need to see to settle on a guy there? What are you looking for?

TC: Well you have to have somebody that can actually get everybody lined up, make all the communication calls, and then play the game at a very high level. So that’s what you’re looking for.

Q: Has that been a bigger challenge than you even expected?

TC: It’s not bigger, it’s not bigger.

Q: Do you have that guy that you’re confident can be that guy at this point?

TC: We’re making progress towards it. Hopefully we’re going to get there.

Q: It seems Eli might be getting a new contract soon. Is it good to get him settled so he can just concentrate on the season?

TC: I think that there would be no doubt for all of us to have that behind us, particularly Eli and his family, to have that behind them and no longer have questions about that every day or every time he appears. I think that’s a good thing.

Q: I assume, in your estimation, it’s a deserving thing if he earns it?

TC: I’ve said it many times, and I’ll say it again: He’s our quarterback, he’s the guy that’s our leader. He’s been an MVP of two Super Bowl’s. He’s a great player, and we are excited to have this accomplished and looking forward to being on the field.

Q: How do you view the NFC East?

TC: Are you serious? Come on. I was about to leave here after one question, and you’re still going. How do I feel about the NFC East?

Q: Where do you guys stand compared to past years and this season?

TC: There’s four teams in the division. All of us are fighting to be the team that wins the NFC East. We haven’t played a game yet, so we’re excited about that. Looking forward to it.

Q: Last year you took the team down to the 9/11 memorial before the season started. Any thoughts on this day and what it means?

TC: Very emotional for all of us. We should always remember. We should never forget the lessons learned on 9/11. But one of the things to really grab a hold of is the way it unified our country, and made us literally one, with everyone saying what can we do? What can we do? From that standpoint, it’s a tremendous example for our football team of people coming together and realizing that they have to serve each other. They have to work with each other and for each other to make it the best possible circumstance. So although it’s a sad day to remember, and we share all those emotions with our entire country, not just New Yorkers for what happened some 14 years ago. On the other hand, we have great respect and admiration for those, and again, the way we feel about the fireman and the policemen and all those who served their fellow men on that particular day—our respect couldn’t be higher.
Coughlin is a master

at answering all the questions and giving out absolutely zero information.
This may be telling more than it first appears

to: If he’s going to get better, he’s going to get better. Considering how this knee issue sprang up after a practice it is pretty easy to see that this issue could be a season long one and maybe season ending.

someone explain to me why Coughlin gets so pissed off with Jordan Raanan?

TC sounds like a dick...they are legitimate questions. This has gone on for a while with Jordan.
because he's not mike

Why not ask about the guys playing. Stop trying to find a Cruz ain't looking good story. It's a non story. He will be back soon.

Because Jordan is the only one who keeps re-phrasing questions to get the answer he wants while the others usually back down when TC is feisty. Jordan doesn't give up on what he wants him to answer.
And..

Probably not by accident, now you know who TC is annoyed with and he has a name and a face now. Now we all know who the beat guys are because we're psycho paths, but I would assume Mikey G coached him a little and both of them are aggressive at trying to improve and be more than a beat writer. It takes pushing it a little and getting noticed, I think that's part of Jordan's mind set. I may be dead wrong, but that's what it looks like to me.
Question asked of Spagnuolo
RetroJint : 9/11/2015 10:40 pm : link
"Why do you like to zone blitz so much?" Answer:"We don't do any of that." Was he being a dick? Was there any re-phrasing? There is absolutely nothing Coughlin is going to say on the matter, regardless of how many different ways it is re-phrased. In his time with the Giants, Gary Meyers has pissed off Coughlin the most, followed by Kim Jones, for the brief time she was a beat writer covering the Giants. Coughlin would call her "Kay" to bust her rocks. Ultimately, so what? Beat Dallas Sunday night.

Watch the video. Spagnuolo was being sarcastic. He responded with a smile.

Jordan knows he's going to piss Coughlin off when he asks the questions he asks - he pushes him relentlessly in areas he knows Coughlin doesn't like to go -- but he believes he's just doing his job asking the tough questions. When Coughlin refuses to answer them he does not give up.

look Raanan's certainly not playing the "like me" card - he's playing the hard boiled who, what, where, why and when - he writes as wells he pushes the envelope and he's the best of the beat reporters on the Giants beat right now

Well, he'd hate me because I don't even think Jordan pushes the envelope all that much.

He asks if there is an update on Cruz. That's a legit and fair question. I get it...TC doesn't like the press but he supposedly made an effort after 2006 to get more warm and fuzzy with them. That seems to have gone by the wayside.

Tough questions would be, "Tom, I realize this is a tough question, but how can the team rely on Beason when the guy simply has proven he can't stay on the field?"

or

"Both you and Spags say Markus Kuhn is doing a good job, but to the untrained eye, he doesn't seem to be holding up a the point-of-attack on running plays, what are we missing?"

What is he supposed to say to those questions?
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/12/2015 10:24 am : link
Do you heard to hear Tom say "I don't know" to be satisfied?

I don't know what he's supposed to say, but its the reporter's job to ask the questions.

I post the transcripts all of the time...you've seen the questions. Most of them are repetitive BS stuff. And some of them are necessary (i.e., when one of your most important players on the team - Cruz - hasn't practiced since August 17 and real bullets are about to fly, it's important to find out what is going on.

The venom TC has for Jordan doesn't come off in print...you hear it/see it in the videos.

TC: A trained eye
You are missing that Kuhn speaks German.

Spags noted that as the first reason why he is in at DT.
