I don't know how these forums work...but I think I took to long to check back and answer more comments...so that thread was archived?
Anyway.
Dan in the Springs asked about why coverage matters on a blitz technique.
The coverage is critical. In a zone blitz, there is a defender for every possible receiver, and sometimes extra.
In a man blitz, every receiver has at least 1 guy covering him. If a back or TE blocks, the guy covering him needs to "add on" in order for the blitz to work. Otherwise, the back helps block a blitzer, the blitz is less effective, and the coverage was already more vulnerable bc its man. So 'usually' the DC will have guys in man cov add on when their guy stays in to protect. If the back/TE blocks you, you can't just put a move on him, he could slip out and be WIDE open for the Q to dump off to.
Sometimes you will see that happen too.
So the DC asks you to bull rush through him to the Q.
If the back/TE blocks a DL or blitzed, they are instructed that they now "have him"...they have to bull rush him to the Q. Same thing, you don't want him slipping out.
The best DCs add on in man blitz, cuz otherwise you end up with a cover guy floating in no mans land 5 yards off the LOS accomplishing nothing for the D.
Anyway, to answer your original Q - this is at least part of why you see blitzers running right into backs/TEs.

this has been a fascinating thread and if we were trolled, the guy at least knows his shit about the teams Kehl's been with.
I disagree with his take that TC is overrated, but I'm glad to hear his opinion and he's stated his objections well.
Much like I'd expect from a hairless chest, pink wearing sonofabitch:)
Bryan, the one thing i take away from your post is that there seems to be a pattern of "its all the different teams fault for not appreciating me". I could understand 1 maybe 2 teams not realizing your value, but when it gets to 3 teams i have to assume its the player instead.
I too, am a believer in "who is the common denominator"
But it really was just 2 teams - NY and STL.
My complaints are about Spagz and Coughlin. Not the other coaches I played for.
Have you ever used peds Bryan?
BlueLou : 10/12/2015 4:30 pm : link
Do you know of any other players in the nfl who use PEDS?
I've never tasted alcohol. Never smoked. Never used any drugs. Never any PEDS.
TONS of guys in the league do, though. They don't even test for HGH, so what is to stop guys from doing it? The honor system? Yeah right. So it's really anybodys best guess exactly how many guys are on them. But guys are pretty careful about not admitting it...I only heard 1 guy flat out admit it.
I missed your responses on the first thread but coming on here to explain yourself is a stand up move. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it’s hard for us as fans to truly understand the situation when we are on the outside looking in. Wish you health and happiness in your post playing career.
Lots of you kept wondering why I didn't just show up 5 minutes early? After I learned how much it meant to him, I did.
I was just trying to paint a picture, though. Early on, when I would show up a minute or 2 before the mtg began...I WASN'T THE ONLY GUY DOING IT.
There were plenty of other guys too...he just reacted to some guys differently. Don't think I am saying I was the only guy he didn't like too...there were plenty who got his wrath, and plenty who got a free pass too.
Some of you appreciate how I see it. The meeting is at 1:00. Be on time. If you aren't, I will fine you. Lets not make a big deal out of it.
You have to realize, there are like 10 different times a day to be late: mtgs, walk throughs, lifts, and practice. It was exhausting with everyone walking around tight butt holed.
It wasn't like that in STL, WAS, or KC. You still got fined if late...but nobody walked on egg shells.
Shanahan is a good coach too.
Oh, and yes it is true the whole every clock in the building is 5 min early. it is set that way. It gets exhausting too, cuz then you have to set all your own clocks 5 min early, and you forget which ones are or aren't, and it gets hard to keep track of. so if a mtg is scheduled at 1:00, in actuality TC wants you strolling in there at 12:50 real time.
Why get bent out of shape over this?
Mike in Long Beach : 10/8/2015 8:01 pm : link
A handful of players over the years have agreed that relating to the players was Coughlin's biggest (and perhaps only) shortcoming as a coach. Coughlin himself even acknowledged it and reinvented himself in the summer of 07.
There's 50+ players and a practice squad on every NFL roster, not to mention coaches, trainers, assistants. The list goes on and on. Styles aren't always going to mesh. This to me doesn't come off like sour grapes. He just doesn't like this aspect of Coughlin's coaching style. Maybe he should keep his mouth shut, but really, who cares that he didn't? He only brought up the one thing that has been brought up about Coughlin numerous times.
The only thing I take issue with is the use of the word "overrated." Coughlin's track record of success is on par with the perceptions he has, IMO. Definitely a dumb word to use there, but he said a lot of things in that statement. I'm not going to characterize the entire sentiment because on one foolish word.
One thing that still bugs me a bit
an_idol_mind : 10/13/2015 12:32 pm : link
in this post is the pointing out that other coaches Kehl has played under don't do what Coughlin does. The thing with that is that those other coaches don't have Coughlin's record of success, either.
The premise of the argument seems to be that if Coughlin did things differently, he'd be more successful. So how successful would he have been? Are we talking four Super Bowls? A string of 10 years without missing the playoffs?
If you're realistic about the landscape of the NFL, you'd have to accept that Coughlin has a terrific record as a head coach and that his rules are probably a part of why he has that success.
Coughlin is an excellent coach. I said that in the interview. I just think he gets more credit than he deserves.
The other coaches I played for? Spagz - trash. Romeo - mediocre at best as a HC. Shanahan - can't say enough good things about him. Awesome coach. Look at how well his Offenses do...look at Kyle's success in ATL this year. Shanahan sealed his fate when he sent RG3 out there with 1 leg though.
One thing I'd like BKehl to address is why HE did not
Steve Filipowicz : 10/13/2015 12:48 pm : link
relate well with the other players.
He ate by himself and didn't iteract with other players. On the surface, then, not much of a team mate.
Why so aloof when FB is a team game?
Steve, I have the same question
SomeFan : 10/13/2015 2:17 pm : link
Even if from different backgrounds or nothing in common or I like meditating during lunch, one should try to connect with teammates. Maybe he did in other ways, not sure but you raise the same question I had.
I said in the article, that at times I ate by myself. Not always. TC hated it.
Every rookie gets hazed, but I got a ton of crap for being a virgin at the time. You get sick of it after a while, so sometimes you sit by yourself so you don't have to listen to the crap they say. Thats all.
Every year in the league after that, guys didn't care so much. I wasn't a rook anymore.
Now that the bona fides have been established the point becomes...You joined the Giants shortly after TC had made significant changes in his persona with his ballclub and led the team to one of the great underdog Superbowl upsets in history. Then again shortly after you had departed(after playing mediocre ball with NY) Coughlin again led the Giants to yet another Superbowl title.
So it begs the question why should anything you have to say be taken seriously on the subject of Tom and his ability to interact with players? If you had performed better maybe it would have been reflected in your relationship with him. But you didn't so perhaps the reason your personal experience with the coach suffered. His realtionships with the over 100 players that earned Superbowl Championship rings on his watch appears to be on solid ground.

Now this is sour grapes. You're proving wrong, so instead of apologizing, you double down and take shots at the guy? Grow up.
He won the 1st race. He jumped the start...I didn't even see it, cuz I had my head down. Deossie was our starter, and told me afterwards that he jumped it. Im like "why didn't you stop it then?!?" Flipping Zak pussed out on me. Cost me $500 bucks too.

Truth be told, we have no idea what Coughlin's relationship is or has been like with the "over 100 players" on his watch. I'm sure they weren't all the same.
Ha, that would have been excellent.
