Interesting....didn't Butler follow Spags to the Rams, though?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my previous question

I think I speak for a lot of Giants fans that we were sad to see Pope leave. Waufle too.
You mention players you enjoyed being around
Kevin in CT : 10/23/2015 1:46 pm : link
What were your thoughts on Eli compared to other QB's you were around while you were in the league?

Also, how hard was it coming onto a team that just won a Super Bowl and traded up to draft you?

any idea why so many Coughlin teams of that era would start fast and then fade in the second half? Just random?
Not much more to say

Brian, I admire you and your NFL career.

Best of luck going forward!
Kehl... there are so many players that never make it
GMAN4LIFE : 10/23/2015 2:00 pm : link
they try and never get drafted or picked up afterwards... You can say you did it and played with the others.

It may not have ended the way you want it but you went farther than most. Always be proud of that.

quick question, were you married when you played and if so, were there any sports groupies?

Thanks so much for coming on here and interacting with the fans. It's a real treat, and that Pit game in 08 when you got that INT was one of my favorite regular season Giants games of the past 10 years.

Question - What was it like going to school and being an athlete at BYU, where the reputation is that people don't have as much.....fun, as at other schools?

Awesome of you to do this. Quick 2 questions regarding BBI.

1. Do other players read the forum during the season for shits and giggles?
2. Did you and other players read the game threads and make the game adjustments that the BBI braintrust would lead you to believe that's what is holding us back from being a dynasty?
lol .... Thanks BK

You're in camp you first year and you know unless you throw up on Coughlins good shoes you are making the team if only because you were a vested draft choice. My questions is the guys brought into camp with no shot of making the roster or practice squad who get minimal practice reps and maybe mop up time at the end of exhibition games, what motivates them to go through the agony of camp knowing they will be released and no one will pick them up? Seems like a fools errand just to say you went to a pro camp with no shot to make it

Bryan. Kind of a simple question. What kind of teammates were Tuck and OSI? Any comment about JPP in his first season with the Giants? What do you think of him now? Not including the firework incident.

Bryan, what attributes, traits, or practices
BlueLou : 10/24/2015 4:10 pm : link
enabled Jon Goff to suceed while you didn't? You seemed pretty similar, so far as size and AA went and according to both of your college records' of success and your combine measurables. But he worked his way up to starting Mike LB, and seemed like a TC favorite as well.

Curious that you didn't mention him as a comparison to you. Nor did you mention being friends with him even though you were part of the same draft class, played similar positions, and were even successive draft selections by Reese and co. Was there stiff competition between you two? Enmity perhaps?

Goff was an ILB prospect and Kehl was an OLB prospect. That's how they were viewed by all the draftniks coming out of college and that's how they were projected by the Giants. They weren't in competition with each other. It was Boley that took reps from Kehl, not Goff.
Here you go, BlueLou....

From BBI....
Quote:
4th Round – LB Bryan Kehl, BYU (6-2, 242lbs, 4.68)

SCOUTING REPORT: Two-year starter. Finished the 2007 season with 91 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 3 interceptions. Kehl combines good size and athleticism. He is a three-down linebacker with good speed and agility. Changes direction well. Strong. He is not the most aggressive linebacker out there and sometimes struggles to shed. He has very good intangibles – smart, instinctive, intense, and hard working. “Wow, he is really something when you talk to him,” one scout said. “He might have been the best interview at the entire Combine. He’s the kind of person you want on your team.” Scored a 29 on the Wonderlic. “Kehl is just a flat-out player,” said Kehl’s college coach. “He is one of those guys who is always around the football and is a ball hog and makes a lot of plays. I have talked to some people out there and they tell me one thing about this guy, he is not only an athlete but he has got a mind that is absolutely unreal and football is important to him.”

MEDIA Q&A WITH GENERAL MANAGER JERRY REESE:

Reese: Bryan Kehl is a linebacker from BYU. We liked him. He is a big athlete, can run, very, very smart, good in coverage. He played in a 3-4 defense as an outside backer. So we think he can play SAM or WILL for us. They are kind of interchangeable in our defense, to be honest with you. So those are things we liked about him. We moved up to get him because there were so many positive things about him. We had some extra picks in the sixth round so we moved up a few spots to pick him. But there is a lot of positive stuff about him – a clean guy. We think he will be a good football player for us; play on all of the special teams right away. We like him that way.

5th Round – LB Jonathan Goff, Vanderbilt University (6-2, 245lbs, 4.72)

SCOUTING REPORT: Three-year starter. Goff finished the 2007 season with 113 tackles, 6.5 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions. Goff has good size and is well built. There are conflicting reports on his overall athleticism and range. A little on the stiff side and not overly agile. Active and productive. Strong. Goff takes on blocks well and plays strong at the point of attack. He is not strong in man coverage. Excellent intangibles – smart, hardworking, and plays with an attitude. Twice voted team captain. Scored a 29 on the Wonderlic.

MEDIA Q&A WITH GENERAL MANAGER JERRY REESE:

Reese: The next man is Jonathan Goff, linebacker from Vanderbilt. We think he is a middle linebacker; very productive; very smart. He can play on all of the special teams. That is a common theme with us – got to play on all of the special teams; a young kid to bring into the fold, start developing some as a backup middle linebacker. He is smart. All of the things that we like about football players, those last two guys. So that was two good picks for us to give us some depth at linebacker and create some competition at some of those positions as well.

All I can say is

You freaking rock! Your posting is one of the coolest things I've seen around here. We have a lot of smart posters who know a thing or two about a few things but your insight as a player is really amazing. No kidding, you should listen to your wife and get into media. You have the mind the look and the chutzpah to go all the way. Just don't stop being so honest because that is what makes reading your opinions so interesting.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope you'll be a regular.

... I have a few questions about your tenure with the Giants that might help resolve some long-standing debates.

1) When Bill Sheridan took over from Spagnuolo, did the defense change much? The results obviously weren't as good. Do you think the problem in 2009 was more coaching or personnel (including injuries)?

2) Any thoughts on Sheridan's successor as linebackers coach, Jim Herrmann?

3) On a scale of 1 to 10:
a) How cheap was Flozell Adams's trip of Justin Tuck; and
b) How badly did the resulting shoulder injury affect Tuck in 2009 and beyond?

4) When he returned from a torn meniscus in 2009, was Osi Umenyiora freelancing and neglecting his assignments? Or was he just doing what the coaches wanted?

5) How does Tom Quinn compare to the other special teams coaches you worked with?

6) Lastly - on topic that spans the Giants and Rams - you hinted that James Butler is not a fan of Spagnuolo. Unlike you, Butler chose to follow Spagnuolo to St. Louis, and he was there throughout Spagnuolo's tenure (though his playing time diminished). What went wrong?

Bryan, thanks again for participating, and best wishes for your future endeavors. It would be great if more ex-Giants would stop by for these AMA-type exchanges.
Awesome thread.
