Multiple outlets are reporting that Alex Kurtzman, co-writer of 2009’s Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, will executive produce a new Star Trek show through CBS Television Studios.
The show will premiere in January 2017 with a preview episode on CBS and then, in the U.S., move exclusively to the CBS video on-demand and streaming service, CBS All Access. It’ll be the first developed specifically for the CBS streaming service.
Internationally, the show will “be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms.”
So what’s this series going to be about? Here’s all the official press release said:
The brand-new “Star Trek” will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Do they go serial, episodic, or some mix? I assume a mix, but the question is whether it is mostly episodic with a bit of advancing plot (like some police procedurals now), or something a lot more akin to the end of DS9.

They'll have to create an overarching story arc like DS9 had with the Dominion/Jem Hadar. However there will also need to be some "alien of the week" episodes to break the tension a little bit and keep the ST universe anticipating the next step in the big story arc
DS9 in particular annoyed me. Who ever heard of a shape shifter preferring the form of a space rat. And how do you Trek anywhere on a stationary base. Stupid. I still watched them all. The Ferengi Quark was the only notable character until Worf joined the show. Sisko was watchable.
Voyager and Enterprise were worth watching for the TNA alone. I still can't make up my mind which one of Seven or T'Pol was the better piece of ass.
Going to embarrass myself here. I really liked Voyager. And I've never caught much of TOS -- I was raised on TNG, which I have a hard time watching now for some reason.

...and the winner is T'pol...
So you passed away in a Merino outfit?

I was raised on the original series (as reruns during the 70s). Voyager was actually the only later series that I liked. I never liked TNG at all.
So only the first episode will be on TV. All the remaining remaining episodes will only be available domestically through CBS' subscription streaming service.
So who's willing to pay $5.99 a month for the privilege of watching the new Star Trek? Not me.
Expect the show to get a lot of views here from illegal means like torrents. Some guy in Canada or the UK records the show off TV and posts online.

Would love to see Joss Whedon or J.J. Adams or even Ron Moore come back to run the show.

Always hoped both would show up on my door at the same time. Oddly still waiting.
I like that this show will presumably be set in the "prime" timeline instead of the alternate J.J. Abrams timeline. There's been no development in the prime timeline since Nemesis, except for that little bit in the 2009 film about Romulus and Remus being destroyed by a supernova.
TNG is my favorite series, followed by Voyager. Enterprise was ok, but not great. Never liked TOS or DS9.
