Tom Coughlin

November 5, 2015

What can I do for you today? Who do you want to know about right away? You got a list, youíre looking at the list. Do you have any questions about the Tampa Bay team or about our team other than whoís not working? Itíd be wonderful, itíd be such a change. Might be uplifting to me.

Q: After what happened to you guys in New Orleans with Drew Brees, do you hope that your defense can do something this week to make a rookie quarterback look a little bit more like a rookie?

A: Thatís the intent, thatís the goal. Not just the quarterback, youíve got a heck of a ground game youíve got to stop. So physically, we have to defend a very good rushing attack, we have to defend tight ends, multiple tight end sets again. They do have outstanding receivers down the field, they have a couple of backs that theyíll run at us, so weíve got a lot to defend. But overall, do we expect and is our goal to play better, sound defense? Yes, it certainly is.

Q: Overall, is it more difficult to plan for a rookie quarterback even though you might have seen him in college, when heís in his first year, not knowing what to expect versus planning for a veteran?

A: Well, only because thereís a limited amount of tape that you have. But you do have quite a bit of resources as youíre speaking and the knowledge of how you groom a young quarterback is obvious. I think the running game, the play action pass, allowing him to move with the nakeds and the nudes and all of those types of things, thatís where they start. Donít forget, he is a force to run the ball if he decides to pull it down.

Q: Can you just talk a little about Dwayne Harris and being carted off and coming back and the toughness?

A: Heís a tough guy now. If at all possible, heís going to go under any circumstances. He did have the ankle injury and he got to the sideline and regrouped and felt like he could contribute and came right back out and played. So he is a tough guy, and itís a good example.

Q: What did you see from Jason Pierre-Paul yesterday and howís that looking?

A: He practiced well. This will be nice to have two days in a row. He got a lot of work on both sides, he played at end for the defensive unit and he also played some scout team. So weíre looking forward to extending that today.

Q: Prince Amukamara came out okay yesterday?

A: Prince worked well. Yeah, he did.

Q: Heíll be accelerated now?

A: You know, we still have to hold him in that range that I mentioned to you, yeah.

Q: Is the tough part of that injury the idea of the physicality, that once you put him out there, you have to make sure heís ready?

A: Youíre talking aboutÖ

Q: Prince. With the upper body, you canít really simulate the kind of tackling.

A: No, no, itís difficult. You wouldnít want to do that right now anyway because heís under control. As much as the strap was down, he did have his hands up kind of high a couple of times yesterday. And did a nice job with it and didnít look like it was something that was really affecting him or he was thinking about anyway. That was good to see. The idea, of course, is to get him going and get him in position where heís maneuvering as a defensive back will maneuver so when he does get the green light he can go.

Q: Is it also a situation where because of the way he plays, his style is a physical kind of style? Itís not like heís the corner who just wants to go out there in coverage.

A: Yeah, but itís dictated by the injury.

Q: Are you more getting him ready for next week than this week?

A: Well, weíre getting him ready and when he gets the green light weíll be all set.

Q: JPP talked yesterday about being right-handed and now heís got to put his left hand down. How much of a difference is that for a football player?

A: Itís different. These are the things that have to be worked through. What he wears on the hand, how we can adjust that to make him more comfortable, how he can use itÖI was thinking of putting a baseball bat over there myself, all those things have to be worked through so that heís comfortable and heís ready to go. He did use the hand yesterday and got some contact work. So that part of it doesnít appear to be an issue, but he hasnít put it down yet.

Q: But I mean thatís more push off than anything?

A: Yeah, stance and gathering himself to come off on the ball. You canít put your head to the inside when you put your left hand down. Itís different for him, he has to work with it.

Q: The glove he has now, thatís what heíll go into the game with?

A: Theyíre working on that all the time. So I wouldnít say itís a done deal right now.

Q: Are you disappointed in Owa OdighizuwaĒs rookie year? Just the way it unfolded.

A: Disappointed in the fact that we didnít get to consistently work with him. The missed time definitely affects the young player, without a doubt, especially in that position. He needs more work.

Q: Is that why short-term IR? Because he can work no matter what, he can get a couple weeks?

A: Heíll be with us, heíll be right here, heíll be in the meeting rooms, heíll be on the field with the trainers trying to get himself to the position where he eventually can go again. But being around it is the thing thatís important right now.

Q: How far away is Jon Beason?

A: All I know is what Iím told and he couldnít work today.

Q: Is he having tests done or anything?

A: I think the tests are pretty much done.
I know what a naked bootleg is

What is a nude?

"move with the nakeds and the nudes"
Sometimes his responses are designed to make the questioner

feel like an idiot, and to cut off follow-up.

I can't blame him for some of his confusing responses.
we may be able to eke out a win

without prince, but his return will be massive to the defense and was hoping for a more optimistic view towards his status this weekend.

If were 4 and 6 going into the bye the season is over. Cruz and Beatty will be playing out the string

Don't know why we just don't release him already.Complete waste of a roster spot. Then again, maybe Reese wants to sign him to an extension.
I'd really like to see

JPP as an OLB in our 3-4 alignments if his plant hand is an issue. Slide Kennard outside and use Ayers/Moore/JPP at the rush LBs. He's got the athleticism and length to be a problem from that spot regardless of hand issues.

Good post. This looks like another disastrous signing for us. Good interviewer though like a lot of our draft failures. He was done when Carolina convinced us to give them a pick for him.

Turns out a ďnakedĒ bootleg is when the QB rolls to TE side of the formation and the TE slips out into the flat.

A ďnudeĒ is when the QB rolls to a side without extra protection and a WR comes across the field from the backside and into the flat.
