Post-Game Press Conference: WR Odell Beckham

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/15/2015 9:16 pm
WR Odell Beckham Jr.

Postgame vs. New England, November 15, 2015

Q: How was it going toe to toe against the defending Super Bowl champions?

A: We lost the game. I lost us the game with the play down in the end zone, a play that should have been made. You can’t leave it up to the officials to get anything right. You’ve got to make the play yourself and it was just a case of playing the play longer than the opponent.

Q: Did you feel like you had that ball?

A: Yeah. I mean I caught it. I trust in my hands. I go up and catch it. You come down with two feet and you can’t try to do anything too early. You’ve got to complete the whole process. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to.

Q: The NFC East is down this year and you showed well against one of the elite teams. Going into the bye week, can you take any solace in that?

A: There’s a lot of season left to be played. There’s still chances to get to where we need to be. This is one game in the season. Unfortunately, this is a game that we all wanted to win. I definitely lost it for us. You can’t win it, but you can definitely lose it and I feel like I did that. You’ve just got to come up with it.

Q: Was there any explanation from the refs at all?

A: No.

Q: Did you seek one?

A: No.

Q: Did you have to make a move of some sort after you were already down?

A: No. I didn’t think you had to do anything else but catch the ball and get two feet in the end zone. I don’t really know much more.

Q: Did you feel you had the ball and got two feet down?

A: Yeah. I definitely caught the ball and got two feet down. Like I said, it’s just playing the play longer than the opponent. It came in late and knocked it out after I felt like it was already a catch.

Q: After the first touchdown catch, did they do anything different coverage wise?

A: They played the safety over the top. They had them rolling a lot and they played a lot of trail technique and the safety would just be over the top. It’s hard to hit a deep ball on that and you have a safety over the top. He’s going to be right there towards the end of the play.

Q: Were you surprised to see single coverage on the opening play?

A: No. I know that they’ve got a very good corner over there. Malcolm (Butler) is a good corner and he’s a guy that they trust to do what he does over there. I think he did a very good job today at making it more difficult for us with the technique they were playing. You’ve got a man playing underneath and a man playing over the top – it makes it hard.

Q: How would you describe the move you made to beat the safety after you had gone past Butler on the touchdown?

A: At this point, it doesn’t really matter. A touchdown in the first couple minutes of the game and we still lose the game because of me. It’s not something that’s going to sleep well.

Q: When you say, “Because of me…” are you blaming yourself for the loss?

A: Yes. I didn’t catch the touchdown. We could have had a touchdown and made the Patriots go down and have to score and not put a kicker who is one of the best kickers in the league for a chance to kick an easy field goal.
As someone pointed out in another thread

this phrase makes me wonder if rather than tuck it away he was beginning to wave it in celebration? : "You come down with two feet and you can’t try to do anything too early"
He was starting his celebration

That's what he is getting at by saying play longer than the opponent.
Its clear as day he screwed up
dep026 : 11/15/2015 9:21 pm : link
he is even admitting it. He's owning up to it and taking blame which is nice to see. Hpefully, it doesnt happen again.
I

thought the ball was knocked away by Butler, but he's basically admitting that it got punched out because he was celebrating.
Do the replay officials even understand that the review

standard is indisputable proof. You can't tell me that there was indisputable proof to overturn the call on the field.

Will Collins or anybody else do the same?
Including coaches?
He was in the endzone....
TheShade : 11/15/2015 9:45 pm : link
....with two feet down and the ball in control for long enough to be a catch before it was knocked away.

If running backs can just break the plain for a brief second before getting the ball knocked out and is called a TD, I don't see why they over ruled Beckham's TD. If it was outside of the end zone, I can see why it would be over turned. But touchdowns only need the the shortest amount of possession time it looks like.
The interesting thing is that he admits that he screwed up
EricJ : 11/15/2015 9:45 pm : link
and yet you have people here who still think that was a catch/TD.
I, for one

am happy to hear him take responsibility. I thought Butler got in his head a little today and there were some balls he usually catches that he didn't catch today. The non-touchdown was a bang bang play that was there for him to make. He didn't make it. It was the right call. He isn't responsible for the Crap play calling before the two minute warning but he could have changed the game right there.

It's not either/or.

If he held on, it wouldn't have allowed the refs to become a factor.
Good for him

for taking responsibility. He's learning. I hope he'll also learn to keep the ball tucked rather than carrying it with only one hand for 30 yards, as he did on his long TD.
Unless there's a part of this that Eric didn't post,
shockeyisthebest8056 : 11/16/2015 1:48 am : link
how on Earth could someone draw the conclusion of "he shouldn't have celebrated so early" from what Odell actually said?

He just said he didn't make a play he should've... celebration had nothing to do with anything he said.

This.

He says it himself.
