NFT: Tiger Woods - the end is nearing?

ChathamMark : 12/1/2015 8:33 pm
Interesting words. Seems at peace with all the injuries. He did have one heckuva career.

I think what hurt Woods the most

was bulking up and turning into Ronnie Lott. He was at his best when fluid lanky. Obviously his body couldn't handle the bulk.

Knee and spine injuries....
Bad backs never get better

Tiger's had his back sliced and diced several times by the surgeons

Woods was greatest I ever saw, hate him but he was. Not a knock that he could not hold up, it ends for everyone.
As I've been saying since 2008
Stan in LA : 12/2/2015 12:25 am : link
No more Majors, and now, no more wins.

Tiger now says, " Now I'm now really good at video games."

Not as good as me, my friend, not as good as me...
the PEDs were idiotic
markky : 12/2/2015 6:01 am : link
who knows the real effect, but it had to have shortened his career.

a real shame.

he could be winning for another decade were he healthy (Singh, Snead, etc.).

There was a lot less controversy with Tiger.
The Majors will get eyeballs

though less on Thursday & Friday's. The rest of the Tour outside of The Players will lose those that tune in to see Tiger blow up or root for him. If Televised Golf was a stock I'd strongly advise to sell. I like Day McIlroy Spieth but I wouldn't watch a tour event they were contending for until Sunday afternoon late. Tiger was must follow from the first hole on Thursday
Golf enjoyed unprecedented growth in TV ratings....
Crispino : 12/2/2015 8:43 am : link
while Tiger was dominating, but it's not going away because he's shot. The game survived when Hogan and Snead turned it over to Palmer and Nicklaus, and when they turned it over to Norman and Faldo. A new generation will get into the Rory, Ricky, Day, Spieth wars. Or someone new will emerge. The narrative where the game will fall apart without Tiger is nonsense, IMO.

would show up for the labor day weekend tournament, around here....The Deutsche Bank Championship.....

We would travel to Norton Ma, only a little over an hour away.....

Easy to find him, just look for the biggest crowds....

The guy was all business during regular rounds.....wonder if he ever lightened up in his practice rounds....

With the crowds, you couldn't get near him......so on long straight aways, you would go ahead of him, about 320 yards, and you knew he would hit it about there, and you would be near him.....or you would go to the next tee, while he was on the previous green, so that you would get a good spot to see him up close teeing off...

They list him as 6'01", but he didn't look taller than me at 6'....there definitely was a big difference between a young Tiger and the present one, ala Barry Bonds....

Whether juicing or working out, he was a slender guy when he started....

Not too friendly with the fans at this tournament.....would sign his card in the trailer and his car would be ready to whisk him away.....other golfers went out to the fans, after signing....

No doubt, Tiger would have beaten Jack(majors), if he stayed healthy....it just seemed week after week, he just always seemed to be in contention....fans loved him.....moved boulders for him.....

Who can ever forget that chip shot at the Masters on 16?

Tiger was like Mike Tyson, in the sense that, you didn't think you could beat them....they had that aura about them....that aura was the brightest, when he won his last major, the US Open, as he limped around that course, making shot after shot...Tiger's aura dimmedthe following year, when he lost the PGA to YE Yang, as Yang came from behind to beat him in a major....that was Tiger's, "Buster Douglas" moment.....that was the crack in the armor....Tiger had lost with a lead in a major.....

And that was one of the things that separated Tiger from Jack.....Tiger was a great front runner.....but when it came to the majors, I don't think he ever won one, where he was trailing at the start of a final round....Jack had done it numerous times......

So yes, I was one of Tiger's legions, that would tune in on the weekend, to see how he was doing.....he has become mortal, with some of his scores, and not making cuts....the sad part is, if he was juicing, and that lead to his physical problems, he didn't have to....Bonds, who would have been a hall of famer, without juicing, and would have hit in the vicinity of 600 homers, did what everyone else was doing at the time, and has tarnished his image....Tiger could have won without juicing, and probably would have played well, much longer......to be done at the age of 39, does make one wonder.....

He will still play...still be a draw...still have his sponsors.....but those stretches from '99-'02 and '05-'08, were something else......maybe after '03 and '04, that's when things changed....
don't watch golf, just the headlines
fkap : 12/2/2015 8:56 am : link
but when I was a kid, I watched Palmer and Nicklaus grow old and be semi competitive.

As an adult, I watched Tiger take the world by storm and then crash big time.

seems to me, he's been done for several years, so who really cares?
Didn't say it would fall apart
Headhunter : 12/2/2015 8:57 am : link
it'll survive like Tennis after McEnroe & Connors. It will lose a ton of viewers but it will survive

I wonder if you could make the case that he would have lasted longer in Nicklaus era, before all this "advanced" sports science shit and better PEDs.

The bulking up certainly didn't help, but I always said that he would hurt his back with that swing. It was so violent, he was bound to have problems later in his career.
I'd like some proof
PaulBlakeTSU : 12/2/2015 12:38 pm : link
for the steroid and HGH allegations, rather than making very harmful allegations about a guy who had a well-documented intense fitness regimen and side-by-side pictures of a guy we've seen since before he was old enough to drink.
I also think
PaulBlakeTSU : 12/2/2015 12:43 pm : link
it's hard to compare Tiger to Nicklaus. I imagine that modern golf technology forgives more errors and causes all players to perform better, and so I imagine that it helps level the playing field.

More than that, I imagine that golf participation, training, specialization today absolutely dwarfs that of 40-50 years ago and that the globalization and talent pool has become so much more refined and concentrated.

But I'm not a golf historian. I'm curious to hear some opinions on that (aside from Stan)

That was a bold prediction. Not sure I buy it. FWIW, I was at the Masters this year on Saturday. The crowd following Tiger was 10 times more than the group following Spieth or any other player.

Tom Watson addressed some of that with his speech following the British Open. It's worth a listen if you're a golf fan.
This is just hilarious

After saying for over 20 years that the chart on his wall growing up showing Jack's 18 Majors was his goal, now he says this:

Quote:
• Woods pointed out again that the chart of Jack Nicklaus he kept on his bedroom wall as a kid had nothing to do with the record 18 majors. It was related to age -- the first time Nicklaus broke 40, broke 80, won his first golf tournament, his first state amateur, his first U.S. Amateur and first U.S. Open.

"To me, that was important," he said. "This guy's the best out there and the best of all time. If I can beat each age that he did it, then I have a chance at being the best."

You can not make this up. He now realizes he CAN'T do it so let's make up something that says that was never my goal to begin with. Too funny.

Woods will fall short but he's still an all-time great. At one time I believe he was playing at a level that was the best ever.

What's your beef with him?
A tragic hero type at this point but
Jimmy Googs : 12/4/2015 11:40 am : link
I always enjoyed watching tournaments on tv when he was playing. Tiger was really exciting at the top of the leaderboard and as clutch as they ever came.

Now even though I like Spieth, golf is lesser...
