Paul dottino was on wfan saying that when obj lines up in the slot, he might be covered by Finnigan recently came out of retirement. Obviously Finnigan is no match physically at this point but it'll be interesting to see all the extracurricular activity between the two.
I'm sure a lot will disagree with me, but the way OBJ played his rookie year reminded me of Finnegan with the cheap shots and trying to get in his opponents head. He has pretty much cut that out of his game, but I wonder if it will resurface tomorrow? Should be fun to watch.
Um, no...OBJ may talk trash and his histrionics might have been over the top at times which rubbed opponents the wrong way but to compare that to a notorious cheap shot asshole like Finnegan is way off the mark to say the least.
Sometimes he is the instigator and sometimes he is reacting the other guy.
CF made up for physical limitations by getting in WR's heads. Hopefully OBJ can win the mental battle because the physical battle will be no contest.
But like I said, that seems to be in the past.Hopefully he can keep his head tomorrow.
Finnegan is one of the dirtiest players of the last ten years. his game has been to physically and mentally work his opponent, especially when that opponent is physically superior to him. he's made a successful career with his style of play.
that
a lot of players and fans of other teams think OBJ is a bit of a douche. we don't, but they do
Beckham reminds me more of Shockey or Steve Smith, very fiery, fiesty, they wear their emotions on their sleeve and it shows after a big play. I don't believe that is calculated or planned, I think it's an intense emotional response. The end zone dances are planned, but I would consider that to be a player having fun celebrating and much less about getting into an opponents head, especially since it's occurs at the end of the drive after all the work has been done.
I think there are some similarities as a player like Finnegan is intense, competitive and fiery, but the concept of being chippy, and getting into the head of a player I think is really a strategy employed by defensive players, and not offensive players. Same tactic is used by defenders in basketball(think of the old Knicks and Pistons teams in their attempt to defend Jordan).
To be fair, Beckham has thrown a punch and gone after guys after the play is dead. That is a fact. However, Beckham is not remotely close to the A-Hole that Finnegan is.
OBJ is quickly maturing but getting into someone's head is what Finnegan does. OBJ does need to be smart enough to keep his head. It's not a ridiculous question/concern by any means. I agree OBJ is an emotional player and it's part of what makes him so great. He's got to keep his head though. I DO NOT see this as a concern throughout his career. OBJ has been a lot better as of late already.
Early on it worked to his advantage but it quickly stopped working and eventually started working against him. He has since seemed to eliminate it from his game.
The point of this thread is that I would expect CF to try to rile OBJ up tomorrow (if they are matched up) as there is no way he can hang with him physically. Hopefully OBJ doesn't take the bait and all the PF flags are on CAR.
BUT OBJ is always willing to retaliate. He lets guys get into his head a bit.
Finnegan is a piece of shit, but he is good at irritating the living hell out of an opponent.
I'm sure this has been addressed with OBJ. Let's hope he heeds the warning.
Exactly. O[DB|BJ] plays with great emotion, which allows him to make mind blowing plays. The downside is when you play that way it tends to shut the brain down in a binary fashion. In a fight, it is often the second player who throws the punch that gets penalized/ejected.
I'd line him up early & often in the slot to see what match up he's gonna get. If it is Finnegan I'd keep him there all day or until Carolina makes a switch.
In those instances, we can go max protect and try to get OBJ deep, or Eli needs to make that blitzer miss and take advantage of the weakest zone/spot on the field.
Courtland on OBJ (versus Josh Norman) is too see how far the refs will let it play out before calling PFs. You know Carolina will still mirror OBJ with a Safety in these defenses.
I hope he shows everyone what/who he is
