It was speculation sounds like reality today.
early retirement - ( New Window )
Great career
timintey : 1/31/2016 5:19 pm : link
Hall of Famer? 9 seasons. Averaged over 80 catches per. I think TO is a no doubter. Did Calvin do enough?
Leaving a ton of cash on the table
Giants2012 : 1/31/2016 5:26 pm : link
the guy could just go on IR and collect millions.
Kudos to him.

Terrific career.

A shame he didn't have the teams.
That's a tough loss for the lions
jcn56 : 1/31/2016 5:29 pm : link
I give him credit though, can't beat walking away on top. Sucks that he's another great that won't get a ring.
Great

player. Wish him the best. Class act.
He's a very conscientious and intelligent guy
B in ALB : 1/31/2016 5:41 pm : link
with two smart parents who raised him right in Atlanta. Not surprising that he's going out now while he's young and relatively healthy.

We'll continue to see this more and more. Make your money, limit the damage to your body, then call it quits.
I think this will start to be a trend
larryflower37 : 1/31/2016 5:41 pm : link
With the salaries going up.
He made 100+ million in his 10 year career get out while you can still walk and your brain is intact.
Football will be gone in 30 years anyway
Wish him well
Steve in South Jersey : 1/31/2016 5:42 pm : link
Great player. Made a ton of money and realizes that he doesn't need more. A wise man. Seems to escaped the NFL with his health.
A lock for the HOF imo

all retiring this year? That's gonna be some first-ballot HOF class. Coughlin may have to wait a year.

First ballot HOF without question
definitely HOF talent
markky : 1/31/2016 6:35 pm : link
but I have a problem with him being a "first ballot lock" and Strahan wasn't.

Strahan did more

year
He had the talent and ability to be in the HOF
EricJ : 1/31/2016 6:46 pm : link
but he did not deliver consistently. He would have a huge game and then he would disappear for two games in a row. To me, that is not a hall of fame type of career/performance.

He was better than average, but not HOF. In fact, I can lineup about 10 WRs still playing who I would rather have on my team next season.

Curious to see what your top 10 is over Johnson. For some reason, I thought Calvin was a FA, and I was salivating at the possibility - albeit slight - that somehow we could get him opposite OBJ. That would be unstoppable.
9 year career
larryflower37 : 1/31/2016 7:01 pm : link
Avg 81 catches 1291 yards 9 tds 15.9 yards per catch.
86 yards per game. Per year.

I don't know if that's first ballot hall of fame.
EricJ bringing the laughs
B in ALB : 1/31/2016 7:01 pm : link
Johnson has more receiving yards in 9 seasons than any other player in history over the same number of seasons. No one in history has managed to do more over that short of a career.

7 of his 9 seasons he was over 1000 yards, one season he was 16 yards shy of 1000, and the other was his rookie year.

He's missed 9 games in 9 seasons and broke Jerry Rice's single season yards record.

And he did it all while playing for some shit teams over the years in Detroit and playing mostly against double teams and always against the best CBs in the league.

Yet we have someone saying he was merely above average. I'd say that's unbelievable but this is BBI and there are mental patients running amok as usual.

He is diffently an HOF but how much does only playing 9 seasons hurt him?

I doubt he is owed $24 million next year. There is a difference between how much he is getting paid and what his cap number is. If I am wrong I alologize.
Calvin Johnson
Marty866b : 1/31/2016 7:20 pm : link
Not HOF? Some of you here don't have a clue. Easily the dominant wide receiver in this era. One of the greatest ever.
He's a tremendous talent but not HOF
OBJXIII : 1/31/2016 7:21 pm : link
If he hangs it up now. Longevity and total stats are a big factor, and it doesn't hurt to play on winning teams ( unfortunately he isn't that lucky).
He'd have to play another couple years and pad the stats IMO to make it into the hall.
Dominant in many games
EricJ : 1/31/2016 7:36 pm : link
and invisible in others. That is my point. I am not arguing that he is/was one of the most talented WRs in the game. He may get in the HOF and I would not argue about it if he did. I just dont like him being talked about like he is/was one of the best ever because he wasn't.

To the person who asked which 10 WRs in the game are better. That is not what I said. I said there were 10 I would rather have on my team next season. Big difference.

I want players at any position who are consistent. So, guys like Edelman for example are not as talented as Calvin but he delivers every week...period.

He's owed $16 million yet with early retirement i bet he has to pay bonus dollars back. Could be wrong
Lions have seen...
TexasGmenFan : 1/31/2016 7:48 pm : link
arguably their 2 best players in the last 30 years leave at a point many would consider relatively early in their career.

first Sanders, now Megatron. that's rough
He's a HOF because I've never seen a WR 2x covered like this
David in LA : 1/31/2016 7:48 pm : link
It's too bad people only look
UConn4523 : 1/31/2016 7:56 pm : link
at stats instead of the games. To David's point the way he was guarded during his prime was unheard of, especially how frequently it occurred. I've never seen a WR command even double, even triple coverage as much as Calvin Johnson.

Him retiring early shouldn't hurt him. Longevity has never been a question with him and he has more than half of his career spent with some of the worst QBs you will ever see.

FACT. Detroit will not win as long as they employ Edsall.
Put Calvin Johnson
SethFromAstoria : 1/31/2016 9:32 pm : link
and Larry Fitzgerald on Eli Manning's team and they would be the 2 best ever. Ha. Amazing that Fitzgerald especially has been playing with a qb who is not 1/4 as good as himself.
Oh
SethFromAstoria : 1/31/2016 9:40 pm : link
and he's likely a 1st ballot HOF. He was the best player at his position for a few years. The longevity is interesting because other guys will have played double. But he'd probably finish at the top.

Perhaps

Exactly. Make believe fantasy Dungeons & Dragons Football clown show by the usual suspects.

Let me guess. He drafted Clavin Johnson in his make believe league and he was disappointed. And that formed his football opinion. What a joke.

there's another player.....played 9 years exactly. I'll let you guess who. He was a lock. Same reasons.Better....better....but same.
Anyone have a look to see what the average NFL career span is?
jcn56 : 1/31/2016 11:25 pm : link
'Only 9 years' sounds ridiculous.

I do agree that the writers, being the shitty bunch they are, will probably have a problem with him hanging 'em up early and the limited playoff success/sample size doesn't help him, but on his merits I don't see how anyone could contend he's not destined for the HoF.
Julian Edelman being compared favorably to Calvin Johnson, huh?

Julian Edelman isn't fit to shine Calvin Johnson's shoes as a wide receiver.

SOme of these posters must be smoking crack on a casual basis now.
It is an obligation
grizz299 : 2/1/2016 7:17 am : link
and a sacred commitment of so many contrarians here to disagree.
There is no reasonable statement that they won't spend energy and trivia trying to compromise.. Attention getting or just plain cussedness...doesn't matter.
For ten years the man has been the best or near best at his position. He is in the conversation for the best of all time.
Still people need to disagree....he is a first time HOF'er and as much as I like Michael he is not in the conversation as the best defensive lineman I ever saw.

No, and reading comprehension again is a problem for some of you. I said I would rather have Edelman on my team next season. This is not comparing the two nor is it saying that Edelman is a superior talent.
