Q: What is it about preseason that gives you confidence?

A: Preseason games; that is what we are getting better at. The team is getting better. We're learning from our mistakes and when it's time to buckle down and go to war, we'll be ready.

Q: Thought you got better the other day?

A: Yes. As a unit, yes. As a defense, yes. The ones, we definitely watch film and get better each and every day.

Q: How does this defensive line look compared to when you were coming in?

A: We’ve still got work to do. We have to build chemistry with some guys. All of us are new, friends with each other. They only person that's on the d-line is me and Hank (Johnathan Hankins), and we haven't played a full year with each other yet. So we’re basically getting ourselves together. That's what we need to this year.

Q: What do you see as the limit for the defensive line?

A: There is no limit. We’re striving to be the best at each and every position. Each guy knows what they’ve got to do and what it takes to get better. So, individually you have to work hard and prepare yourself and try to strive yourself to the next level. I think that's what everybody is doing right now. Guys are just running around getting these preseason games in. Come September 11th, we'll be ready to go to war. The team will be there, and the team will be set, and we know what we’ve got to work with.

Q: How impressive was Landon Collins’ work at the goal line against Buffalo?

A: That's what's expected from him. He does it in practice; he's a young guy. He has to step up big time, and he's one of our starters, so I expect that from him, nothing less. Each one that's going out there, I expect nothing but the best from them.

Q: Is there a difference between games one and two in the preseason?

A: Each game, you're getting better. We just started. As a football player, you have to get yourself in the right state of mind and condition has to be on point. That's why me and OV (Olivier Vernon), we run out here and do extra work out here, to get our conditioning up because we know 65 or 75 percent of the plays, we're going to be out there.

Q: Do you put any more emphasis than you have the last couple weeks on Saturday night?

A: As far as the ones, I feel that we played pretty well, we played the run well. There were a couple of passes; the long 54 yard pass or whatever it was, that killed us. But we made a stop, they didn't score on that play. Goal line was good; we're only getting better. I made a couple of mistakes at goal line that I’ve got to fix up. Just me working on some of my stances and stuff. That is what preseason is for and we're putting it all together right now.

Q: Is there any competition between you and OV?

A: There is no competition at all. He’s supposed to do that. When it comes time for me, I'm going to do it. Right now it's just preseason. We’ve got those big guys coming, we’ve got to start running and rush the passer, and we're doing a perfect job of that.

Q: Are you holing back?

A: I'm not holding back at all. Everything I do, I'm giving 100 percent.

Q: How much running and stuff that you do with OV?

A: It's consistent. I did it last year, on the sidelines by myself. But this time, we actually have a guy that actually wants to do it and we're doing it together. Like I said, we're striving to be the best. With OV, he knows what he's got to do to be the best and I know what I have to do to be at my best.

Q: Do you think other players are recognizing it?

A: Some guys come run with us. It's at your own will; we do it because we know what's at stake and what’s coming up. We’ve got to be at our best come these 16 games, and our conditioning can't be low. We're doing whatever we have to do, we're taking care of business. That's basically it.

Q: What’s been your reaction and the locker room’s reaction to the allegations regarding Josh Brown?

A: Nothing really. Nothing has been talked about. It is what it is. I think he's suspended one game. It doesn't matter, we're all family around here. People have their own problems to handle. He's still our brother and we look past it. We going to need him. Every player, we're going to need them.

Q: Have you talked to him at all?

A: No, I haven't talked to him. At the end of the day, every guy on this team has a situation. I don't like people knowing about my business, and my situation, so I try to keep out of people’s situations unless they come to me and ask for help.

Q: Are you surprised he hasn't been cut?

A: No. Why should we cut him? Every guy needs a chance.

Q: He was accused?

A: Who knows, you weren't there.

loved the comment on voluntarily working to improve conditioning - that he did it on his own last year, this year he's doing it with OV, and now others on the team are joining them.

Lots of complaints that JPP hasn't shown leadership and I know he isn't such a visible leader, but these comments (if true - they should be reported on by the beats) would show that he's actually doing the right thing in being an actual leader of the defense.

You'll never get all of any team following you all of the time. An effective leader doesn't just talk - they lead by example and it certainly seems that JPP is doing just that - being an effective leader.
