Head Coach Ben McAdoo

September 5, 2016

Q: What made you guys decide to bring in a third quarterback?

A: We have four quarterbacks here. We’re going to give Ryan (Nassib) a little bit of competition with Josh (Johnson). He’s a good player. He’s been around the block. It’ll bring out the best in both of them.

Q: Will you dress all three in the game on Sunday?

A: I’m not going to talk about who’s going to be active and inactive in the ball game.

Q: You said the other day you were comfortable with two quarterbacks. Did anything change in that?

A: No, I’m comfortable with two. We decided there is one out there, Josh, that we thought could come in and create some competition to get them both better.

Q: What do you like about Josh?

A: He has good rhythm in his body. He’s been trained in a version of the system. He plays with his cleats in the ground, has a natural throwing motion and has some good experience.

Q: Jasper Brinkley started nine games for you last year and looked to be in the mix for the starting linebacker job. What happened with him?

A: It just came down to it’s a numbers game at this point. It came down to numbers. We thank Jasper for everything he’s done for us. Coming in playing last year off short notice, he did a nice job for us. We wish him the best.

Q: He had some injuries this summer, did that hurt him a little bit in the competition?

A: Again, we thank Jasper for everything he did for us and we wish him the best moving forward.

Q: So Kelvin Sheppard is the middle linebacker at this point?

A: It depends on what package you’re in. We can throw a variety of linebackers out there. I think Kelvin has definitely earned an opportunity. He showed well in the preseason game and has done well in practice. He’s a great communicator and we’re excited to have him here.

Q: What was Darian Thompson able to do today?

A: He was back in a limited role today. He’s testing it out. He has a harness on his shoulder but he’s out here in a limited role.

Q: What was your reaction to the Eagles trading Sam Bradford?

A: No reaction. I’m focused on 1925 Giants Drive. That’s where my focus is.

Q: What do you know about the quarterback you are going to face this weekend in Dak Prescott?

A: Dak is a winner. He’s won everywhere he’s been. He has taken advantage of his opportunities in the preseason and it’ll be a challenge for us.

Q: How much was Jonathan Casillas able to do today?

A: He was out here in a limited role. He’s getting his wind back right now. We’ll dust him off on Wednesday and give him an opportunity to get back on the field.

Q: Will he have to wear something?

A: It’s early to say.

Q: B.J. Goodson and Leon Hall are both out of concussion protocol?

A: Hall and Goodson are both going through the process.

Q: With Prescott, is there a challenge when you’re facing a rookie in that they show you some things in the preseason but you haven’t gotten to see a regular season look from him at all yet?

A: He’s a guy that has taken advantage of his opportunities. He’s looked good in the preseason and he’s done a nice job for them. We’re going to have our hands full. He’s a good player.

Q: Have you been able to get a sense yet of how close Will Beatty is to being able to get in a game?

A: I look forward to going in and watching the film. He did some good things out here today. It’s encouraging.

Q: With the cuts, you didn’t leave too much depth on the offensive line. Do you think you’ll have you go on the waiver wire and see who’s available this week?

A: No. Again, we’re comfortable with the players we have on this roster right now. We have a good, strong football team. You never stop looking, but we’re definitely comfortable with what we have.

Q: Has Keenan Robinson moved to the middle more now or does Mark Herzlich become the backup?

A: Again, it depends on what package is on the field, but they have to play multiple positions. You can’t just play one position in defensive football anymore. You have to have versatility.

Q: Did you consider trading for or signing Josh Sitton?

A: You look at everything. I have history with Josh. Tremendous player, tremendous talent. We wish Josh nothing but the best but he’s not on our roster.

Q: What was it about Robert Thomas that you guys liked when you claimed him the other day?

A: He plays with great energy. Leverage, he stays on his feet. Tremendous balance and he uses his hands well. He’s active. Good player, glad to have him.

Q: What do you think your first regular season game on Sunday is going to feel like for you?

A: It’s going to feel like the first regular season game. I’m going to feel excited and ready to go.

It really is refreshing to have a HC who isn't afraid to reveal

exactly what he's thinking!

He learned from the best... TC.
So reading between the lines...

- Nassib is disappointing us

- When I threw the dart at the LB picture on my wall, it hit Brinkley

- Losing to Dak would be a disagrace...

- I am pissed at Reese because he didn't get me Sitton
Right he had NO REACTION
Big Blue '56 : 9/5/2016 3:35 pm : link
to the Sam Bradford trade..So about that bridge...
Nassib will benefit from the competition?

Not a good sign
Good Summary Jimmy

..
that interview was a whole lot of nothing
Steve in South Jersey : 9/5/2016 3:42 pm : link
why bother? Maybe the reporters need better questions.
BTW - The Beat guys actually asked all the questions we
ZogZerg : 9/5/2016 3:43 pm : link
wanted asked. Good job by them.

Of course, we didn't get any answers, but at least they asked.

Although he did say that Beatty looked good out there.
This was all "coachspeak" stuff - basic "I don't know yet, we will see

This talk is all to be expected.

The one thing that does seem clear is that McAdoo will bring in whomever he pleases to compete. Johnson is such a journeyman QB but he has started games and has been around so at least he is a veteran. If he had to lead a team down the field he may in fact be a better option than Nassib...but not yet. It will take him awhile to learn the playbook.
Why bother doing an interview?

If you're not going to say a damn thing. Wastes everyone's time including mine reading it.

Would you have preferred McAdoo let the cat out of the bag or provide bulletin board material?

Yes. I want specifics, damn it.
Johnson has

yeah, but I got a little funny post in nevertheless...
I don't want him to give anything away.

Just tell them "I don't have anything for you today," and don't bother going through the motions.
All of us would do the same damn thing
Mike from SI : 9/5/2016 4:07 pm : link
if we were the coach. His muted responses are in the best interests of the team winning, and ultimately, we should be happy about that.
Translation on released

DT Hughes. He doesn't play with great energy. He doesnt have leverage, he doesn't stay on his feet. Bad balance and he doesn't use his hands well. He’s inactive.LOL
I'll take that over

1. I don't disagree. It's just funny because of the many comments on BBI over the past week or so about how refreshing his interviews are because he is so open and forthright.

2. He said even less than Belichick ever did, which I didn't think was humanly possible.
This is the same as nearly every coach

I prefer the post game pressers. Hopefully, it's a good one next Sunday
I only read these Q and As to check for injuries.
Big Blue '56 : 9/5/2016 4:48 pm : link
I only watch pre and post game pressers for injuries. Otherwise I largely find them a waste of time

Knock it off gidie..The pressers are largely a waste of time save for a nugget here and there(i.e. It was Darian Thompson's job to lose before the games were even played)
Why would you ever expect anything from these conferences?
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/5/2016 5:32 pm : link
. Nice that they still maintain that they believe in the OL. Also, the skies are full of winged pigs.

Now I know the state of the OL is bad--when TTH looks as though he has joined the gloom and doom club, as some have dubbed the realists (: LOL

I guess we'll find out in the fullness of time whether they're all sniffing glue up there in the corner office, making Eli and Ben the next sacrificial lambs
Good

Interesting exchange here:

Q: He had some injuries this summer, did that hurt him a little bit in the competition?

A: Again, we thank Jasper for everything he did for us and we wish him the best moving forward.
