Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn

Q: What did you think of the kickoff, with the new rule, and how it played out for you guys?
A: League wide, you see some teams are keeping it and some teams are kicking touchbacks. It's on the flow of the games, you're not going to do one thing the whole time. So, based on where you're at, and what the score is, and what the other team's possessing and you're mixing it up.
Q: When Josh Brown came back, did the week off bother him or is he fine?
A: He came back focused, ready to do his job. I haven't seen anything to make me feel otherwise.
Q: Did you ask him if he kicked during his time off?
A: We kind of talked about what he wanted to do with that time and we kind of had a plan, so we followed the plan and felt good about it.
Q: What was the goal of that plan?
A: Just to work on some kickoffs. It's hard to do field goals when you don't have a snap and the hold and the NFL field. So you just do the hash marks and kind of find when kickers go away, whether it's from the spring to the summer, they come back off a little bit because of the fields and different things, so we just have them focus on kickoffs.
Q: It's kind of unfortunate that you lost J.T. on the kickoffs.
A: Yea, it's really unfortunate. He was doing a good job; he was hurt a majority of the training camp. He came back and kind of latched on to being a special teams leader, trying to be vocal in meetings and on the field. So, it hurts that way and you feel bad for the kid because he's had to deal with some injuries.
Q: Who do you turn to now to fill that spot?
A: You obviously look to B.J. Goodson, if he's ready to go, and he's been a willing learner. So, just the speed of the game will be something a little bit different for him but I think he'll be ready to go.
Q: Was it kind of a fluke injury because it looked like it was behind him?
A: Another guy rolling into you is really common and how those things occur, and it's unfortunate but it's how it happened.
Q: Everything was sound fundamentally with Brad Wing? I know a couple of those punts get down inside the 10 and the 20.
A: Well, one was from 60 yards away and if you hit a good punt you're going to turn over, and when it turns over it's going to bounce and roll forward. The other one he hit a little bit different of a punt, trying to make a play on that one. And the last one, we got to keep it in and we've got to have a better snap, obviously, and he's got to just hang it up there and fair catch at the 10-yard line is a hard goal on that one not trying to get too greedy.
Q: Do the snaps concern you or just that one?
A: Just that one.
Q: Do the Saints have anyone to worry about on special teams?
A: They've got a bunch of guys to worry about. Their returner is obviously very good, Marcus Murphy. They've got an excellent punter in Thomas Morstead, he's been doing this a long time. Very good with hang distance and location. They picked up a kicker, Will Lutz, out of Georgia State, was with Baltimore, he's highly skilled. I'm impressed with his kickoffs and how he disguises location and different things. He had a 61-yarder that was long enough and just a little bit wide, so he's a talented kicker. Someone we liked coming out.
