Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn

Q: Robbie Gould has had a couple of shorter kickoffs since he's been here; is that by design or just what you're dealing with at this point?

A: Yeah, it's what we're dealing with at this point. He's getting good hang time and good location.

Q: Not much of a concern for you?

A: No.

Q: Should guys be allowed to jump over the line of scrimmage to block kicks?

A: It's dangerous. You get worried that they're going to land on somebody because when the guards step to brace; you know we had one against New Orleans where they jumped over the line because you're trying to flip the guys, center, guard, keep their eyes up, flip them. And then that's dangerous for the guy that's jumping and it's also dangerous for guys that land on legs. That would be my injury concern with it.

Q: Seems like it's effective though.

A: Yeah. You time it up and the center’s head is down for a split second and the guards’ eyes aren't up and if they're pulling the guards down, it happens sometimes. It could be vulnerable.

Q: It's a relatively new thing?

A: The second level jumper...people have been jumping from the line of scrimmage but the second level jumper is relatively new, yeah. We had one against the Rams in 2014. So it's been around and we're always looking for guys that are potential jumpers. But people have done it from the line of scrimmage for a number of years since I've been here, but they've outlawed that.

Q: Do you have jumping tryouts in practice?

A: No. You just have guys that are athletic enough to do it.

Q: On giving up the big returns.

A: We've just got to get the guys to do a better job covering. We had a two and three not do their job last week and got outside and they were squeezed in and would have had an opportunity to make a better tackle instead of falling off and missing the tackle at 17. That's what it is. We've got to coach them better and do our job and not give up.

Q: How do you see Robbie Gould having done on kickoffs?

A: He's fine. He's never had the strongest leg.

Q: When you decide what you're going to do on the kickoff, do you maybe lean more towards not just trying to boot it out of the end zone because of what's on the table?

A: I don't think he's ever really been a put-it-out-of-the-end-zone guy. So you just have to adjust the coverage to what he gives you. Each kicker is a little bit different. Josh Brown was different and Randy Bullock was different, so you just have to adjust the coverage.
Josh Brown isn't his fault but need a solution for

covering better if he is not going to reach the end zone.

But its not a concern of course...

Our coverage units have always had this bad tendency to rush towards the same exact spot of the field. Seems like a Quinn-advocated coverage method to me.
I am amazed

that Quinn has actually survived this long here.
Outside of the one year Wilson was returning kicks well,
their ST play was porous for a few years.
I guess Coughlin wasn't going to fire him, loyal to a fault
at times.
