NFT: Yanks talk 3-15

superspynyg : 3/15/2017 9:24 am
Gary Sanchez thinks that SS prospect Torres is very close to being ready for the big team. Good endorsement from our star catcher.

Add Girardi to the list of managers that thinks the WBC mangers are overusing pitchers. No surprise that is the shared thought in MLB clubhouses.

Severino had a good outing going 1-2-3 in the first then 1-2-3 in the third. Gave up 1 er and K'd 4 vs the Rays.

About half way through ST. I'm ready for the season to start.
Sanchez and Bird...
Jim in Tampa : 3/15/2017 9:52 am : link
Are having a great spring. I caught the first couple of inning of yesterday's game on the radio (here in Tampa). Sanchez homered (his 4th) and Bird tripled.

Bird's power seems to have returned as well. I believe he has 3 homers and multiple extra base hits.

If Holliday stays healthy the Yanks could have a very formidable 3-4-5 in their lineup.

The truth is...
LarmerTJR : 3/15/2017 9:56 am : link
Torres looks pretty close to ready. Castro should be getting reps at 3rd and Torres at second...

That's good but I wonder how many hits have come off guys who are double A or lower guys and not MLB ready players.

Agree. Headley should not be long for this team. Neither should Castro really, but baby steps...
I think Torres is going to get ABs in Trenton.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 3/15/2017 10:09 am : link
If he continues to tear it up there, he will be an everyday player at 2B before the end of the season.

My question is do they wait until the offseason to trade Gardner because Frazier looks damn good too.
I agree
blueblood'11 : 3/15/2017 10:10 am : link
Why wait on Torres. There have been many young guys in the past who at that age were ready and made the leap successfully. The kid Corea in Houston is the latest example. Trout, Andruw Jones, Bryce Harper just to name a few. Of course that's not the Yankee way for the most part.

Brian Cashman while praising him in the paper cautioned but we haven't seen him play in cold weather yet. Is he fucking serious!! If this kid is that good he's going to have to play in it eventually. The last time I checked some of the best of the best never do or did well in cold weather. Typical Yankee bullshit. I swear sometimes they can't see the forest for the trees.

I think that if the kids force their hands, they'll make the necessary moves. One thing about the Yanks, they arent going to sit tight if they think they can improve from within.

He hasnt played above A+. He needs to start in AA. From there, if you need him, he can skip AAA. BUt ideally, you'd like him to spend time at each level.

When you think of it, since Sanchez and Bird are starters and they usually play the first half of the game. That means they're facing starting pitchers for a good chunk of the time.

They did their first inning damage yesterday against one of the Rays' better starters...Jake Odorizzi.

Of course we won't know for sure until the real games begin. But given there were question marks about Bird's shoulder and a potential sophomore slump for Sanchez, the early results are promising.
I'm no scout but damn Torres looks MLB ready.
bceagle05 : 3/15/2017 10:25 am : link
Castro and Headley would be wise to play through nagging injuries if necessary because they are prime Wally Pipp candidates. I was hoping Frazier would get the Bird/Sanchez second-half-of-the-season call up, and Torres would get it next year, but now I wonder if both will be here by season's end.
Looking forward to season
averagejoe : 3/15/2017 10:28 am : link
Yanks need to trade Gardner for a starter because nobody will ever take Ellsbury's salary. I doubt he will bring much in return. Would really like to see Torres and Frazier ASAP with the big club learning at the major league level. If they are mid-season call ups it will be fun to watch.
When talking about Torres
Pego61 : 3/15/2017 10:39 am : link
just remember that once upon a time Starlin Castro was the top prospect for the Cubs, and made the All-Star Game in his first two full seasons. Now he's on his second team and we're all trying to get rid of him.

There is little or no interest in Gardner from other teams. Nothing worth trading him for anyways.

The only way I want to dump Castro is if we get Machado in free agency next year. Otherwise let's see if he can play third base.
Torres
PaulN : 3/15/2017 2:54 pm : link
Needs to start at AA ball, his fielding needs plenty of work. He is ready as a hitter though, no doubt, but best to take it slow and let him start in AA. The player decides when he plays, if he is that good they will have no choice then to bring him up. I wouldn't worry about this at all. Cashman is doing this very smartly.
Torres
shelovesnycsports : 3/15/2017 4:54 pm : link
need time in AA. He can hit and Field his way into a call up from there. Next year I think he skips AAA and goes right on the team. I would move Didi to 3rd. He has the range and the cannon arm for it. Torres is a natural SS I wouldn't screw around and turn him into a 2b guy. Andujar is also special and will work his way on to the roster in the next few years. By then Didi will be gone.

Andujar Torres _______ Bird Sanchez should be here for a while.

Frazier Rutherford Judge if all works out.

Feel like I'm taking Sanchez for granted saying this, but Bird coming back healthy and running away with the full time 1B job is the best news of the spring IMO.

I will just settle for Bird not being affected by his surgery. Bird and Sanchez and drive in a lot of runs.
Sanchez is legit
RasputinPrime : 3/15/2017 7:52 pm : link
he is taking his walks and looks every bit as good as last year.

Bird looks ready to rake as well.

Torres is going to give the Yankees an issue by June. If Castro or Headley struggle, he looks like he is ready to force the issue.

shelovesnycsports : 3/15/2017 8:08 pm : link
I think he gets flipped for pitching later on. Carter was the insurance for Bird and now I hope Cash flips him. I would rather Holiday and Sanchez when not catching DH. And what do you do with Austin when he comes back and hits.
You can bring up young prospects who are ready
Mike from SI : 3/15/2017 8:13 pm : link
but you can also ruin them by forcing it too quickly. Let the kids (Torres, Frazier) marinate in the minors until they force the Yanks' hands to promoting them. Can't make rash decisions premised on a few weeks of spring training.

Bird has commented that he feels stronger after his surgery...his shoulder was affecting him even during his nice run in 2015. Great news if he stays healthy going forward

I actually expect Headley and Castro to come out of the gate strong...they know Torres is ready to come up and take one of their jobs mid season if they don't produce

A few thoughts
Matt M. : 3/15/2017 9:29 pm : link
1) Has Castro taken any reps at 3B this Spring? If not, he should be doing so, even if only during pre-game ground balls. Torres is seeming more and more very close to ready and Headley is picking up right where he left off. I would rather take growing pains with Torres in the lineup than have a shitty Headley...if they deem Torres ready.

2) Have they announced whether they plan on Holliday or Judge in RF? Does the other DH, or is Carter going to keep Judge as a part-timer (I hope not)? With the way all these youngsters are playing, I wouldn't mind Carter missing the final roster.

3) 2 years ago I was very high on Refsnyder. Now, I can't see a spot on the roster for him.

4) Man it would be nice to rid ourselves of Elsbury to open one more spot.
One more
Matt M. : 3/15/2017 9:33 pm : link
5) Who will the backup C be?
Matt - RF is either
section125 : 3/15/2017 9:38 pm : link
Judge or Hicks. Holliday is DH with maybe a touch of LF, but the word is they don't want him in the field.
I hope Romine didn't fracture something
RasputinPrime : 3/15/2017 9:43 pm : link

Romine is the back up Catcher the Org wants because he has no
shelovesnycsports : 3/15/2017 9:44 pm : link
options and would be a FA if he got cut.. Higgy is the guy who hit 20 hrs last year in minors and a good defensive catcher but he has options and they are thinking next year for him. He seems to have figured it out and is almost ready.

I know that's the plan, but Higashioka is having a Hell of a spring. It's hard to ignore, especially with Romine being less than mediocre.
HEY HEADLEY
shelovesnycsports : 3/15/2017 10:12 pm : link
Gleyber Torres has started working out at third base. He’s not expected to play there this spring, but he is getting familiar with the position. It was only a matter of time. [David Lennon]
They love his bat.
Miguel Andujar was optioned to Double-A,
shelovesnycsports : 3/15/2017 10:14 pm : link
Veteran free agent right-hander Ernesto Frieri was in the clubhouse before the game and he’s expected to sign a minor league contract with the Yankees, perhaps as soon as tomorrow. He pitched for Colombia in the World Baseball Classic after not playing anywhere last year. PitchFX says Frieri’s fastball averaged 95.0 mph during the WBC. [Jack Curry]
Andujar or Machado is the next 3B on the team, imo.
yatqb : 3/15/2017 10:15 pm : link
Torres is likely the next 2B (or SS, if Didi is traded).

I could also see Romine traded at some point this year to make room for Higgy.

Maybe, but Carter will be at 1st base. Hard to hide all those subpar fielders with big bats.

At best, maybe a bullpen arm.
There's always a market for a decent defensive catcher.

In my opinion, carter should be the odd man out right now. Bird should be at 1B every day. At least to start the season, Judge should be playing regularly, as should Holliday. Maybe Carter gets 1-2 starts a week once we get into late May/June to give Judge and Holliday days off.

I wouldn't want a traditional platoon. I want Bird getting regular ABs as a starter, until he starts to show he can't handle it. His Spring has earned it and I'm not a huge fan of Carter's boom or bust production. Like I said, if you want to work Carter in 1-2 games a week to give Judge, Holliday, and Bird a blow, then fine. But, the HRs don't impress me enough to want him in the lineup 4-6 times a week. There are too many outs, especially of the swing and miss variety, in that bat.
