me recently that a number of hospitals see a regular spike in vasectomies performed during the Monday-Wednesday preceding the tournament (so that the patients can take time off of work to recover on the Thursday/Friday). I have no idea if that's true or not, but I may have to consider that if I'm in the market in the next 3-5 years which is a distinct possibility!
has been in a boot most of the week after an ankle injury suffered vs Duke. He said he's good to go and will play, so hopefully he's effective even if not 100%. He's ND's best mismatch vs Princeton so it would hurt if he can't bring it today.

I'm pretty sure thats a myth... but regardless, taking an entire week off for a vasectomy? Pfft... that's a 48 hour thing.

have the most boring final four ever. Duke, Arizona, UNC and Kansas with UNC beating Duke in the final game. I'll need to get at least 3 of the final four, and the whole title game, right to win the $$$.
I tend to root for upsets regardless of my bracket so I'd still be really happy if Duke or Kansas got bounced early.
Off to the bar to see if ND can not be the first team out of the tournament. Play good defense on the perimeter and rebound and ND should move on.

A local sports station in DC (106.7) has a contest every year giving away a vasectomy during March Madness. They actually did it yesterday live on the air from the doctor's office, with one of the guys from the show giving listeners "play-by-play" of the procedure.
Given the difficulties this season, and the fact that Isaiah Wilkins apparently is never going to recover from his illness, I think that's the most I can realistically hope for.
keep changing my mind I'm all over the place. I think I'm going AZ over Butler just to be different. I know AZ is a popular pick though, but I like the way they are playing right now, they have good guard play and a dominate big. I like that combo.
game you get to see two teams who just know how to play the game of basketball. There really isn't to much razzle dazzle. It's good ball movement solid defense and fundamental play.
a regression from Beachum this season. He was lights out last tourney basically carried ND to the elite 8 with his shooting. This past month he's been hot garbage.
tonight at 6:30! The wife gave me the whole "I guess you can not go but he'll be reaaaaal disappointed..." routine. Thank god for the new system where they put all the games on separate channels. I'll record the start of the Terps at 6:50. Should get home by 7:30 or so.

was hit one three - not even approach their 39% season average - to knock off what looked like a pretty average ND team. They shot 26% from three but needed just one more. Certainly, ND had something to do with their ineffectiveness.
And Princeton only shot 6 free throws all game. Six!
really saved Virginia. And every time i've seen him this year he's been awful besides today
He had a weird, up and down season. He had a stretch of games in January where he was terrific, putting up double digit points in seven of eight games. Down the stretch, he was horrendous and was pretty much dropped out of the rotation. He picked a good time to wake up.
I don't know what the hell is wrong with Wilkins, but he obviously is going to be a nonfactor from here on out. Sucks to be us. I still don't think much of Florida and their weakass schedule, though. They beat one ranked team all year, Kentucky at home, and the SEC is garbage.

One of the junior varsity fans waxing analytical about the Men's tourney.
That's funny.
It's the referees fault.
You just can't help yourself, can you. What a fucking whiner. Now, go back to the kiddie threads and be one of the 16 people in the nation watching the NIT tourney. Ya know B, there might be a spelling bee thread you might actually qualify for somewhere.
But he must have something else too because he's been mostly unable to play for two weeks now, and judging by today it's not getting better any time soon. I heard he's lost about ten pounds from illness.
Without him, Salt is pretty much the only real post player we have. Diakite is too skinny and raw and Reuter has some skills but just isn't much of an athlete.
Wilkins said after the game that he's not playing in the next game
We've had some lousy luck with health in the tournament the past several years. Most of the team was injured in 2012 when Florida blew us out, Gill went down with a sprained ankle in the first half against MSU in 2014, Anderson had a broken finger and appendicitis right before the NCAAT in 2015, now Wilkins.
Nichols was an enormous loss. To still have a solid season after losing what may have been our best player was pretty satisfying, and they could have easily won several more. Lost a couple at the buzzer and a couple of other close ones because of bad FT shooting. If we can at least get to the S16, I'd say this was a successful year.
Easy upset call though. Minnesota had no business getting a 5 seed. And MTSU has the experience. I'd pat self on back but I'm pretty sure the damn 12 seed was a 1.5 point FAVORITE entering this game. Nice job committee!!
but so was their last possession. Twenty or so seconds, down by 1, and they pass the ball exactly zero times and their guy launches a 3 from 5 feet behind the line. Brutal shot.

College and the NBA. Teams just are way too in love with the 3 Point shot.
8-0 in one; 7-1 in the other (I chose Florida and ETSU to hedge). northwestern gave me a scare as had them in both, but you can always count on Vanderbilt for tournament choking. year in, year out - never fails.
against almost any other 4 seed, Bucknell probably gets a W. Tough matchup against a team that pressed for 40 minutes. Even then, they hung tough and had a couple horrendous calls against them.
I did call Winthrop losing by 12 though.
I had to stay away from TV, radio, & internet all day
so I could watch the Zags game unspoiled tonight, which is a lot more difficult than I thought. As for the game, the Zags couldn't hit an open shot (3 or free throw) if their lives depended on it. They were definitely tight as a drum.
I do feel a little better seeing that Nova was only up 1 at the half. But they're pulling away now.
St. Mary's beating VCU down is shocking.
Musketeers relying too much on shots beyond the arc
I completely disagree with your constant criticism of the refs, but I usually ignore it as you have an agenda that you research. It's part of the game, adapt and adjust but I must thank you for getting me off Winthrop. Actually took Butler to the Sweet Sixteen. Thanks.
You're a quality poster, the ref obsession takes away from that. Not complaining, just pointing that out. Take it for what it's worth. Carry on.
Nah... VCU definitely got screwed a few times and I'm rooting
who complain about the refereeing are the fans with the least knowledge of the game.
Thank you for proving my point.
After Florida destroys Virginia on Saturday, maybe Greg and B can Facebook each other and leave the college basketball comments to those of us that will still matter.
You guys are really pathetic.
Maybe you can teach your son not to be a fucking internet douche.
Mack exposed him again as a mediocre coach who has been able to recruit at an above-average level.
I'll take Turgeon as a replacement for Crean. He gets his guys to play defense. He's made chicken out of chicken shit. Jake layman is the best player he's had the last 4 years and he's a D leaguer.
They screwed a lot more up than just the big 10. Is there a universe where vandernilts 15 losses in a mid major conference is a higher seed than Wichita state or even Vermont?
They couldn't put Notre dame in this bracket instead - in Milwaukee pod with Purdue? And put Miami in another region.... (Which Miami - Notre dame is far less likely than 1 and 5 seeds meeting)
This committee does really need to go. Further highlights how ridiculous the Minnesota 5 seed was as if was one of the reasons they put Iowa state here and not south region
that was a bad matchup from the get go. After actually seeing St. Mary's for a full game, I have to think they were a bit underseeded, as well.
We fought hard, heroic effort by JeQuan Lewis. They just exposed our weaknesses, and we didn't have a "guy" this year that can make them pay from outside.
Then again, what possible excuse was there for the Spartans getting a 9 seed?
The NCAA committee chairman being their athletic director?
Not enough people are talking about how the big 10 got seeded, and how Michigan State made it in with ease and got such a high seed.
But truth be told i have more of an issue with Vanderbilt getting in the tournament, let alone somehow a 9 seed, than with Mich State which at least has i guess historical success (which should obviously not factor in but it does)
As I have no rooting interest other than my bracket and some bets yet-to-be-made, but a an 8-9 seed seems hardly a gift (if you accept that a team did deserve to make the tournament). I believe #1 seeds make the Sweet16 something like 85-90% of the time.
If you put aside the seeds, Wichita State surely still got screwed, but the Michigan State treatment would put them worse off than they currently are, IMO.
that ND won yesterday. Princeton took it to them the last ten minute and ND didn't know how to respond. ND looked like a team that had turned the corner in their last 10 games and ACC tourney especially and picked a bad day to throw a big stinker.
The good news is that winning is all that matters in the NCAA tourney and they'll have a real shot against WVU given how well they've handled Louisville's press over the years.

Dude what in gods name is your beef with MD? You memorize our free throw attempt total per game like its the tax code. We established last week that its not that your still butt hurt over 2002 because you said you were too young to remember. "Jake layman is the best player he's had the last 4 years and he's a D leaguer." Ok we may have to start a contest here at BBI- most idiotic comment of the week. You think Melo Trimble is chicken shit? Turg is always a tough call for me. He seems like a great guy and an excellent recruiter. However he just does not make those in game coaching adjustments. The program will be fine with him, just don't know that we can take that next step. However who are we going to get to come here that will be much better. I think the seminole moment for this program was after Gary left and the AD Anderson was sitting across the table from Sean Miller and couldn't close the deal. Now maybe Miller didn't want to come and desired Arizona more. That's very possible, however that was our chance to land an elite coach and recruiter that could have really brought us to the next level.
His likely autocorrect misspelling is nowhere as dumb as our AD, who is known for being inappropriately drunk at most major donor events and who also hired Randy Edsall.
Turgeon is a nice guy and ok recruiter, but his in-game coaching was pretty poor this year and he still can't construct a balanced roster. He is essentially a passive coach, and that translates into his teams playing passively.
however my limited MD graduate vocabulary couldn't come up with a better synonym lol. Yea Hump thig is I think he constructed a damn good roster this year. Its funny with all the "awww shucks what a great job he did with 3 freshman" talk and "losing 4 starters from last year" was nonsense. This roster was better than last year. Much better shooting, and before Cheko went down plenty of depth inside. The real indictment was with starting 3 freshman we actually got worse as the year went on, not better. That should be the reverse. All that having been said how much better can we do than Turg? Tom Izzo ain't walking through that door. We had a shot with Miller. And yes Anderson is a buffoon.
I'm saying he's better than Crean. He is starting 3 freshman and he gets them to play good defense. He built a good defense last year with fat/lazy Diamond Stone as the defensive "anchor".
I don't think Trimble is chicken shit. I just don't think you can get to the sweet sixteen with him as your best player. Is that really crazy to think? He averages almost as many turnovers as assists, and he's been abysmal from 3 this year. Is it really a stretch to say something like that? He's an undersized SG that can't shoot and is particularly bad on defense.
Exactly who has been so much more effective than Layman for UMD the last few years? No, I'm not saying Layman should've been a #1 option on a final four team. But from a team player aspect he is someone you want as part of your team.
And I'll say it again, exactly which Turgeon recuit has been tearing it up after leaving MD?
Not putting Turgeon in the Tom Izzo class of the big 10. Or even the Beeline level. But he hasn't exactly been A1 recruits either. Huerter and Jackson are nice, let's see how they develop. But he isn't exactly developing lottery picks in college park either (Alex Len is a bum).

Which recruits have torn it up FOR Maryland? Trimble and Stone were his 5-stars, Melo saved his job and Stone underwhelmed. He basically whiffed on a whole class outside of Layman - Mitchell, Faust, Allen and Cleare, and Nickens and Wiley have never developed. These ARE his recruits - the freshman class has two redshirts. That's poor balance.
But he was third banana his whole career to various combinations of Trimble, Dez Wells, Robert Carter, Diamond Stone, and Self Allen.
Layman was a matchup nightmare at the 4, but he had to play at the 3 because of the Stone/Carter deal. When Layman was the focus on offense at the elbow in, the team did really well.
On Jan 1, Nebraska beat Md primarily by using a 1-3-1 zone at the end of the game that completely flummoxed them. Yesterday was March 16, meaning they had 2-1/2 months to work on attacking that zone. Anyone with a little bit of knowledge knew that Xavier was going to zone the Terps. Looked to me like they got worse against a zone over those 2-1/2 months not better. Who's fault is that? That's the kind of stuff that drives me crazy.
Not saying I've given up on Turge, but I have to see some improvement with him, too, as well as the players.
awful at the start, superb in the middle of the game running Huerter to the high post and firing the dump down pass and then awful the last 15 minutes. Bottom line is 7-26 from 3 will destroy any chance you have against a zone.

I actually have to defend turgeon in one aspect, when Xavier made their run in the second half, the Terps missed 3 straight layups against the zone and Melo turned it over twice. That was the game. Turgeon can't actually put the ball in the hole
Some upsets down the road I have SMU beating Duke and Purdue over Kansas.
My final four is Nova, Zona, Louisville and UCLA. Zona winning it all.
Yup, knew I should not have waited. Oh well.
I have Press Virginia going to the Finals
I've got Purdue, West Virginia, Kentucky and Duke for the Final Four and Kentucky over West Virginia in the Finals
I'm pretty sure thats a myth... but regardless, taking an entire week off for a vasectomy? Pfft... that's a 48 hour thing.

Yeah, UCLA is obviously a good team but i doubt they can go to Memphis and beat both Kentucky and UNC on basically a road floor.

I always liked Al.
Saw that. Gotta assume IU boosters/administration will be watching the Wichita St - Dayton game tomorrow closely.
Lol Mike Woodson next?
you like Cock?
Don't jinx it
Yeah, but you said you like "kid Cock" and we have to go with your first answer.
then let's them back in.
Jesus Christ!
All right, just gonna have to blow them out again in the second half.
Go find the NIT thread.

Yep - and Illinois.
They are ganging tough though.
They play smart ball.
How can anyone not love it?
Nah, really?
A Cuse fan spewing sarcasm on the Big Boy's thread?
Nah, sounded sincere.
Correct! Haven't watched much of it but looks decent. More into UNCW.
let him experience disappointment to make him stronger, ha ha.

Agreed, he is at least two feet behind the line. You have to drive down 1
If you have a wide open three fine, but at least drive to put pressure on the defense and most importantly the refs to call a foul.
They wound up with a contested three
Moving on baby, in the grown up's bracket.
Great game between two of the good guys. Teams that actually have to attend classes to stay in college.
Stu, my 3-year-old knows when it's Maryland time we ain't going nowhere.
4 point game!
Go pollute the NIT threads.
Bwahahaha
Let's go baby!
Down to 3!
Well their one good offensive game is out of the way, they'll probably score 35 next game now
Gives the game away. Damn shame. 15 pt blowout and they let them back in.
Oh well, one thing's for sure, Virginia ain't gonna beat Florida.
Just cover the 8.5 please.

I watched a lot of Ivy League basketball this year, these aren't your typical Ivy League teams anymore as Yale proved last year.
And Princeton only shot 6 free throws all game. Six!
ND shot 21.
Not saying it wasn't, Crisp. I'm saying it was a huge factor. Eight point differential right there in a 2-point game.

I actually can't blame the committee there. Wichita has ZERO good wins this season and no... Illinois State isn't a good win.
Then again, what possible excuse was there for the Spartans getting a 9 seed?
We fought hard, heroic effort by JeQuan Lewis. They just exposed our weaknesses, and we didn't have a "guy" this year that can make them pay from outside.
Damn Australians... :)

The NCAA committee chairman being their athletic director?
Not enough people are talking about how the big 10 got seeded, and how Michigan State made it in with ease and got such a high seed.
But truth be told i have more of an issue with Vanderbilt getting in the tournament, let alone somehow a 9 seed, than with Mich State which at least has i guess historical success (which should obviously not factor in but it does)
If you put aside the seeds, Wichita State surely still got screwed, but the Michigan State treatment would put them worse off than they currently are, IMO.
The good news is that winning is all that matters in the NCAA tourney and they'll have a real shot against WVU given how well they've handled Louisville's press over the years.

Mack exposed him again as a mediocre coach who has been able to recruit at an above-average level.

Take him, since you don't know what you are talking about.

Turgeon is a nice guy and ok recruiter, but his in-game coaching was pretty poor this year and he still can't construct a balanced roster. He is essentially a passive coach, and that translates into his teams playing passively.

Yes, so if he can't recruit top talent or coach up mid-level talent, then what is he good for other than running a clean program and being a nice guy?

Fair enough. When would be the earliest Maryland would even think about canning him though?
Layman was a matchup nightmare at the 4, but he had to play at the 3 because of the Stone/Carter deal. When Layman was the focus on offense at the elbow in, the team did really well.

They can't, our idiot AD gave him an extension, would cost a pretty penny to get out of it.
Not saying I've given up on Turge, but I have to see some improvement with him, too, as well as the players.

I actually have to defend turgeon in one aspect, when Xavier made their run in the second half, the Terps missed 3 straight layups against the zone and Melo turned it over twice. That was the game. Turgeon can't actually put the ball in the hole
Nice call Greg!
