Are some people so uneducated that they just sound out the name they like, and throw it on the birth certificate?! Or do they just have such a hard on to be different?? Either way, names like that are a pet peeve of mine.

There are so many other things in the world to get peeved over.
He's a 4-6 round pick. He wouldn't be able to contribute right away. This would be a nice pick as long as you don't expect anything from him for 1-2 years. Sometimes projects work, sometimes they don't.

I think it's mostly the latter, and Im not a fan of home made spellings of names ether, or Ds or Ls added to the beginning of names, but some people are into it. What are ya gonna do?

Agreed
The interest in Davenport after drafting Flowers and signing Fluker...
...might suggest that the front office is re-thinking the logic that prevailed in 2013-2014 with the selection of Justin Pugh (a.k.a. "Gator Arms") and Weston Richburg, who has struggled against powerful DTs. The more recent additions are physical monsters. Davenport's wingspan is ridiculous.

Maybe some people just want to be a little creative? Jeez. Relax. And I actually think the apostrophe might affect pronunciation here: perhaps he emphasizes "en" instead of "Julie," whereas most people named "Julian" emphasize the first syllable.

Pugh has turned into a near pro bowl guard. I'm pretty sure their thinking was OK with that pick. Richburg, with improvement, was also a very good pick.
Is there ANY tape of Davenport against legitimate NFL prospects?

disagree on both. neither has proven to be the long term solution YET. THis is a HUGE year for both of them.

Says the ignorant white guy from Boston.
Since spelling of names has taken over this thread
the worst spelling of a first name I ever saw was when I was reading the Syracuse paper about an arrest. The guy arrested was prounouced: "el-DASH-ay", but it was spelled "L-A". That made me laugh and takes the cake for spelling originality.
Davenport is 6'7" and has 36.5 inch arm length! Never heard of such a thing - that's over a yard long. And his hands are 10.5 inches so he has big mitts.
He sounds intriguing, but coming from a small school means he will need some serious growth time to become ready for the NFL. A project. Perhaps a priority UDFA

No, he'll get drafted. Maybe as high as the fourth round.
Ryan: I didn't mean to criticize Pugh or Richburg.
Pugh has turned into a near pro bowl guard. I'm pretty sure their thinking was OK with that pick. Richburg, with improvement, was also a very good pick.
Just noting that size/length was a pre-draft concern with both players, and that the more recent additions (you could include Hart as well) have been bigger and far less refined.
I'm not a big fan of these real developmental projects on the OL....
The Giants have shown no real success in drafting these types and developing them. Mosely, Brewer, McCants, Herman, all come to mind. I just don't think that this is something the organization is very good at. They are really good at identifying CBs, and WRs and even DEs but the OL not so much.
not Davenport, then Aviante Collins, or Oguwke from William & Mary. I agree with Reb that we haven't had any luck developing day three OL. Same for QBs. But at least with the former, Reese may well keep trying. He also has a penchant for picking developmental "high ceiling" "low floor" players on day three.

Fair point, though Bobby Hart has made steady progress and might reverse the trend. He shed a lot of baby fat last year, and his technique certainly improved. Long way to go, obviously, and he's already halfway through his rookie contract. Brett Jones showed promise last year too, in his brief opportunity.

Meh. For years the Giants couldn't draft a decent WR for love or money. Then they hit on a whole bunch in succession.
Besides, they haven't had very much success drafting OL early, either. With this draft class, I'd rather stick with mid-rounders.

I do have hope that Hart will reverse this trend. I guess I am a little more cautious in thinking we can find a diamond in the rough, who with a little bit of coaching, will be able to step in and solve some of our OL woes.
Uneducated people come in any race. As do people choosing to spell there kid's name differently, just for the sake of being different. I have no idea what this player's race even is. Just pointing out a pet peeve, which I often see done here on this board. In fact, there are even threads started on them occasionally...which I often find funny. And for the poster that brought up racism here, shame on you.
and people just want to make up spellings these days. And I know, people can do whatever they want with their kid's names. It just happens to be a pet peeve of mine. I'm not sleeping over it though, was just pointing it out when I saw this name. Didn't intend to start a big deal. Am truly just curious when I see names like this...about whether they just didn't know how to spell the name they liked, or just chose to be different.

Nothing to get upset about, as far as I can see. The Giants met with Davenport at the Senior Bowl, as did at least four other teams (Jets, Rams, Packers, 49ers). That's routine, and doesn't constitute a "tell".
Considering that Bucknell is about 2.5 hours from MetLife, Davenport almost certainly counts as a "local" prospect for the Giants and Jets, in addition to the Eagles. So it wouldn't be indicative of much more than ordinary due diligence if they have invited him in for a workout.
It's not exactly a secret that the Giants are looking for OT help. So anyone drafting behind NYG in the middle rounds who wants Davenport will be aware that the Giants are a threat.
This comment really doesn't come off well.

The soft racism of peevish spelling. ;o)

I didn't say anything about racism, I just think that's an ignorant assumption to make.
When was our last OL project success?
