Such a solid defensive core the next 2 to 3 years minimum

pjcas18 : 3/17/2017 3:28 pm
Pray for health!

JPP
Vernon
Snacks
Jenkins
Collins
Apple
DRC

If you count slot corner as a starter (DRC) b/c maybe the Giants open in nickel that's 7 of 11 starters solid or better. If Thompson pans out it's 8 of 11. Though Snacks might not be on the field in nickel, either way it's 7 or 8 really good players locked in for the next few years.

Just need to develop Goodson and the Hankins replacement and fill in around the core could be the best Giants defenses in the Eli era.

I'd include Casillas or Kennard, but not trying to overrate our players.

I'd like to see the Giants sign a veteran DE for pure depth/insurance, someone like Chris Long or Dwight Freeney - the Giants I believe have become a desired free agent destination for veterans who want a ring or another ring and are willing to play for cheap.
agreed PJ.......

.....if we could land a MLB with a motor, we could be something very special.

And getting Thompson back (and hopefully completely healthy) is like an extra pick considering he didn't play hardly at all last year.............
I think Thompson will work out

and be on this list, but DRC will be off.

Regardless, that's some amazing talent. Get some dominating LB's in here and you can QB and have success!
Jack Rabbit and Landon Collins

Both just posted pics of themselves with DRC... Something could be going on, no asshat here just saying, its been unusual, they just posted tweets of pics with themselves and DRC..? Idk maybe nothing.
It would be even better if they upgraded the WIL in the draft
GiantJake : 3/17/2017 3:41 pm : link
The DL and DBs should be very strong in the foreseeable future. Now is the time for them to finally add an impact LB in the draft. It seems like they expect BJ Goodson to fill the MLB role and Kennard is the SAM. Imagine adding Haasan Reddick or Zach Cunningham as a tackling machine WIL. Having a legit run and chase LB would take this D to whole other level.
How about that receiving corps?

"Just bring Manningham back on a reasonable deal, and we should be set through 2013, at least! This Ballard kid looks like a keeper too. Jernigan could be a matchup nightmare. Even Beckum and Barden have started to flash a bit. What a set of weapons Eli could have next year!"

Wtf are you even talking about?
One thing that MUST happen this season is the development
shockeyisthebest8056 : 3/17/2017 3:48 pm : link
of the backups into true rotation guys. We can't have players we spent all of this money on playing the same percentage of snaps in 2017. It's just begging for your investment to get ruined.

There is a new thread regarding this. IDK what it means yet. Something could happen with DRC.

Hence the "pray for health" comment to start the OP.
The Giants need to draft well enough on defense...
Milton : 3/17/2017 4:09 pm : link
...that they have some solid contributors still on their rookie contracts.
I liked the way Adams filled in last year.
Fred-in-Florida : 3/17/2017 4:26 pm : link
For an undrafted rookie he wasn't the liability we've had in past years at safety. He could be solid for years to come.
pjcas18: Understood.

I saw the "Pray for Health" disclaimer. Just underscoring the point.

Man, that picture hurts. I remember thinking Nicks and Cruz would be a fixture on this offense for a decade.
Great core...
Torrag : 3/17/2017 4:45 pm : link
...need to improve CB depth and sign/replace/draft Robinson or his successor and we're gtg for a 2017 title run.

This team has a lot of talent.
somewhat off topic
annexOPR : 3/17/2017 6:32 pm : link
but I honestly think Brandon Marshall is going to be a SB-winning acquisition

this defense is loaded, and will be a top 5 unit for the foreseeable future ... add in Marshall to a corp with Beckham/Shep and hopefully a slight improvement (at least) in the run game ...

add a stud LB in between this dominant DL/Secondary, and this defense could be something special.

Like, history books special. I officially can't wait for this season.
Defense should be good again.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/17/2017 7:04 pm : link
Now if the offense can get it's shit together, we're dangerous.
Goodson

Might be the real deal. Don't be surprised if he is

Hope so. But he could not get on the field much his first year, despite playing behind mediocre players. So I wouldn't count on it.
what would be out of the box and brilliant would
gtt350 : 3/17/2017 10:03 pm : link
be to draft LB , DT, CB one, two and three

He was a rookie and it's asking a lot for any rookie MLB to run a veteran defense. And note that the two ahead of him on the depth chart (Robinson and Sheppard) were both seasoned vets playing on one year deals. And neither has been re-signed at this point in time.
More then solid core.....Still need
George from PA : 3/18/2017 3:31 am : link
A 3 down sideline to sideline MLB
A 3 technique DT
A 4th corner
Depth at DE

And remain healthy

Will complete our defense

If 4th corner is high on the needs list I think we're in pretty good shape.
we are close to having a DL that
idiotsavant : 3/18/2017 11:13 am : link
could be so much more than a vanilla 4/3 line, so close..

as a fan I would really enjoy seeing an A list, multifunctional, badass 'football play making' DT sandwiched between JPP and Snacks, holy crap we could do some shit there.
sure, you can sub in D ends into the interior on 3rd downs
idiotsavant : 3/18/2017 11:28 am : link
but, just as it is with TE on offense, the ability to have the 'two function player' allows the whole playbook available in your 'base', and so, opens up ones ability to put the opposition on the horns of a dilemma on any given down.

IOWords, to me a 2 function DT (vs run and vs pass) is a lynchpin or multiplier in a similar way to how a two function TE (run block, pass pro and catch as well) does.

in that one can then mix and match the gap responsibilities ad infinitum without tipping ones hand with substitutions.

in addition, DT is a physically wearing function to say the least.
