NFT: 4.19 Yankee Thread

kash94 : 4/19/2017 10:40 am
Streak comes to an end at 8 yesterday. However, Severino put up a sensational start - recording 10 SO over 8 innings while allowing only 3 hits and 3 ER. So far, so good with the decision to keep him in the rotation.

Few other notes:
1- Severino became the youngest Yankee pitcher ever to record 10+ SO and 0 BB in a start. He also became the youngest Yankee to record 9+ SO in back-to-back starts since Al Leiter in 1989.
2- Didi starting rehab games on Friday.
3- Gleyber Torres has bicep tendinitis. He'll have an MRI soon.
4- Clint Frazier had a homerun yesterday. Starting to get hot
5- Despite the loss yesterday and the early season struggles, the Yankees have the best run differential in the AL by 6 runs. They are tied with the Dodgers for the second best run differential in the MLB.

Can they keep it up

Yesterday was also the first loss this season at Yankee Stadium.

2 swept series TB and Cards.
... and, tied for first place - doesn't mean much after 14 games but

Luis Cessa and Chad Green

the Yankees two backup starters, have had nice starts to the season as well.

Cessa
2 Starts
12.2 Innings
1.42 ERA
1.11 WHIP
11 SO

Green
2 Starts
12 Innings
3.00 ERA
1.33 WHIP
15 SO
Good stuff

I was a little disappointed in last night's game, but I'm also realistic in knowing that over the long haul, there are plenty of losses. Only game in the world where you lose a third or more of your games and still end up world champions.

Very intrigued by Severino who I had given up on in my head. He's always had the stuff to be a champion, but I had questions about his mental makeup which is just as important as having a great arm. Baseball history is littered with pitchers who flamed out even though they had a cannon for an arm or could throw a ten foot hook, but never learned the mental aspect of the game. Seems to me Severino is now getting the pitchers' brain that is needed to be a star. And he's so young that he's just starting on his long term run as a Yankee great (knock on wood)

Frazier
DCOrange : 4/19/2017 11:00 am : link
Hits a home run and he's getting hot? Comical. He's 4 for 15 over his last 4 games with no 2 hit games since April 9 (his only one). IMO he is the most likely of all the super prospects to fail to match the hype. Obviously hope I am wrong but his 4 year career to date does not match the hype regardless of his "legendary" bat speed.
Good to hear about Cessa and Green
MadPlaid : 4/19/2017 11:01 am : link
Good pitching depth is a must for any successful franchise. Also, if they keep producing like this, the Yankees will be less likely to trade assets for starting pitching.

I have not heard anything about Chance Adams. Is there any word on how well his season has started?

Patience
GiantJake : 4/19/2017 12:00 pm : link
The Yanks are off to a good start and I hope they continue to practice patience. Patience with Severino and Montgomery. Patience with Didi and Sanchez. Patience with Judge. Patience with Frazier, Torres and Chance Adams. The season is a marathon. The weather hasn't even gotten warm yet. Like it or not, the team is rebuilding on the fly and it's not just about this year. Patience!
Severino
PaulN : 4/19/2017 1:59 pm : link
And Montgomery have given the yanks some real hope for this season, can they maintain this level, we'll see but they are showing us that they could be for real. With Cessa and Green pitching so well also, this gives us even more hope, since they are essentially the 6th and 7th starters, and with the season such a marathon as has been said, we will probably need both of these guys at some point.

At some point people are going to have to acknowledge this kids as a front of the line pitching prospect. I think analysts unfairly ding him because he used to be a reliever. But his results as a starter are consistently outstanding.

On top of it the guy he puts in (Pete Kozma) boots an easy double play ball(which would have got Severino out of the inning) before Garcia's 3 run bomb. Why?? Are they trying to showcase the guy for something in a trade? Didi can not get back fast enough.

Two things:
#1) it would not have gotten Severino out of the inning. It would have been two outs with Abreu coming up. I doubt Abreu bunts and pops up with two out and nobody on base.

#2) Kozma makes that play 99 times out of 100. Errors happen and they happen at bad times - just like hanging a breaking ball to a guy hitting .450 is bad. While I agree that it was "dumb" to give Headley the night off when he is hot, it is necessary in the long run that the older guys, especially, get days off.

Unfortunate, but if they win 8 and lose one, we'll all take that! Hell win 3 lose 2 gets you 96 wins.

and got Legends Seats. We got legends seats on stubhub a couple years ago for a game and he regularly talked about how great it was so I surprised him today. Got in there at 530, stuffed our faces with as much seafood and steak as possible, then watched a great game for the Yanks.

If you ever get a chance, the food is incredible. They have everything you can think of.

lol Stanton does the same exact thing but I get your point
1010 WINS just played the White Sox' announcer's call of the Judge HR:

"That one went up and it may not come down. 8-1 New York."

Stanton is the best ceiling comp for Judge, I think.
Castro's shot wasn't too shabby either. The thing I'm impressed by
Victor in CT : 4/20/2017 9:30 am : link
with Judge is that he isn't homer happy and his plate discipline seems to be improving. He had a nice single last night too, a BB and no Ks. If Judge hits .270 they are set in RF for years to come.
Yanks
PaulBlakeTSU : 4/20/2017 9:46 am : link
have the best run differential in baseball at +28. Next best are Dodgers +22, Reds +19, and DBacks +15.

The Yankees are on fire right now.

Remember this feeling for the eventual skid and slumps that are bound to come with any team, especially one with a lot of young players.

it's awesome to watch, but unsustainable for the guys who are putting up some monster numbers right now.

true Paul, but they get Didi and Sanchez back in 2-3 weeks. Main thing I need to see is if the starting pitching is for real. If it is, they can have a surprisingly good season.
I do think the Yanks have benefitted from a nice run
mfsd : 4/20/2017 10:20 am : link
of games against mediocre teams...some good early tests coming up against the Red Sox, Orioles and Cubs in the next couple weeks. But that doesn't discount what they're doing, 9 out of 10 is great for a young teams confidence

well, yeah, clearly they have guys playing over their heads

Chase Headley is eventually going to stop hitting .396/.500/.646.

The most promising thing is how Severino and Montgomery are pitching. That seems more sustainable.
I can't wait until Didi and Gary come back.

.
the funny thing about being eager for Sanchez to come back is
Greg from LI : 4/20/2017 10:44 am : link
that I'm not sure how much of boost they'll get since Romine is posting .321/.394/.500 at the moment. Now, of course he wouldn't hit anywhere near that long-term, so I want El Gary to return toot-sweet. It's just kind of amusing to think that they'd be getting maintenance from him rather than a major improvement.

wouldn't it be wonderfully hilarious if Headley kept up those numbers throughout the season? The Yankees haven't had a hitter lead the league in batting average in a really long time. Bernie?
As they face some better
bigbluehoya : 4/20/2017 10:46 am : link
Starting pitching over the next week, hopefully they continue to grind out at-bats up and down the lineup and get pitch counts up.

Just about to a man, the approach at the plate has been outstanding.

Meant to say

I not Englishing good today.
Bernie indeed
Greg from LI : 4/20/2017 10:53 am : link
Hit .349 (I think) in 1998.

Yanks' bullpen has a 1.41 ERA over 38.2 IP. That's pretty good, no? :)
OK mavens - facing a RHP with no DH tomorrow night -
Del Shofner : 4/20/2017 10:54 am : link
can we guess the lineup? Here's my guess:

Gardner LF
Headley 3B
Castro 2B
Ellsbury CF
Judge RF
Bird 1B
Romine C
Torreyes SS
CC P

While he (surprisingly) never led the league, Jeter did finish top 10 in BA 10 times, including two 2nd place finishes and two 3rd place finishes.
sorry, Bernie led the league with .339, not .349
Greg from LI : 4/20/2017 11:03 am : link
Jeter had some tough luck with leaderboards. The two times he was #2 in BA, 1999 and 2006, he had averages that would have led the league in many years. 1999 finished behind Garciaparra (.349 to .357), 2006 behind Mauer (.343 to .347).

It's good though because there is no pressure on Sanchez to "save" the offense when he gets back.

I was thinking the same think. Also Torreyes leads the team in RBI's( or he did up to a couple of days ago)
Still want Didi and Gary back.
