NFT: Game 5: Rangers at Habs gamethread

Here we go boys. Team looked like fire last game so let's keep the mojo going.

Haven't heard of any lineup changes yet. I'm just gonna go ahead and bitch about the refs preemptively to piss of our resident Habs fan.

Also, fuck Steve Ott in his fucking ear. Let's fucking go, boys

I would not be surprised about anything, but don't let that make you feel like that makes much of a difference, I have been wanting Pirri in all series, he is a good power play guy, and this is something that the rangers really need, to get that power play clicking when these fucks play the way they are, especially in the first two periods when they are still making calls. But he has not played at all. AV is not the reason the Rangers would lose this series, that would be on the players. There is no reason the Rangers can not win this game and set themselves up for a series clincher on Saturday. Let's Go Rangers!!!!!!!

you guys can criticize the officiating as much as you want. It was wrong of me to vilify anyone for that.

For the Habs, Emelin in for Davidson. Puck moving good skating and passing defensively responsible defenseman out for poor decision making, poor skating, defensively irresponsible gritty defenseman.

As Julien a decision as there could be.

and I don't want to overrate Brandon Davidson, he's not a top 6 defenseman. and I guess Alexei Emelin is, but in this series, Davidson is a better fit, especially with the speed and size of the Rangers forwards.

It's like Julien and AV consult with one another on personnel decisions.
Doesn't seem to be any change to the lineup

Extras were: Raanta, Hellberg, Kampfer, Klein, Pirri, Puempel, Glass, Clendening. We know Holden would only get benched for Klein anyway, so no point in getting agitated about it.

Zuccarello is
pjcas18 : 4/20/2017 5:03 pm : link
far more skilled than Gallagher, but both are small players who hustle and make life hard on their opponents. I get why announcers compare them.

And I like Gallagher's game, I don't find him dirty, but he definitely plays with an edge. I'd hate him if my team had to play against him, but I'd recognize the value a player like him has regardless of the hate.

Absolutely, and he has in the past slew footed a player on one occasion - though normally not intentional or blatant and it did not result in a suspension or a fine.

In fact as far as I know Gallagher has never been suspended by the league and not even fined by the league.

Kreider has been fined for his play, is he a dirty player?

The league reviews game film and suspends players for slew foots regularly. Andrew Shaw was suspended for a slew foot this season.

Slew foots are dangerous, so if it was both blatant and a slew foot as you say I would expect Gallagher to be suspended.

Was he?

Not that I have heard so my conclusion is

a) There was no blatant slew foot
b) you don't really know what a slew foot is
c) No suspension because...Montreal

I suspect probably both a and b to be true. but I suspect you will pick c.

Though the fact you're all still talking about how dirty Montreal is isn't a good look for hockey fans.

but don't let that stop you.

One hustles to create..

scoring chances and to get control of the puck, while the other hustles to agitate the fuck out of people.

I'm pretty sure if a Ranger takes a skate out or intentionally trips a player behind the play that they wouldn't be looked at being a hard-nosed hustle monkey.
In fact Gallagher is exactly that
dpinzow : 4/20/2017 5:25 pm : link
An agitator who fans love when he is on their team and despise when he is going against your team. Esa Tikkanen was actually the best at that back in the day (loved Tikkanen, never really liked Avery except when he was messing with Brodeur, and don't like Gallagher but would appreciate him if he was on my team)

I don't think Gallagher does this:

When players hustle like Zuccarello or Gallagher they force the opponent to do things quicker than they want to do and actually draw penalties. But back to Gallagher....

Who is the most penalized player in the series?

I'll answer that for you Zuccarello.

How does Gallagher manage to escape the referees? Let me guess....because Montreal?

You guys are better fans than that.
Zucc..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/20/2017 5:41 pm : link
had a high-stick called and rightfully so and it was a 4 minute penalty.

He has 12 penalty minutes in 4 games, while he had 26 minutes all year! Something isn't adding up, especially with Gallagher pushing the boundaries more and only getting called for penalties in game 1.

Of course, when crosschecks and slashes are going un-whistled, but phantom stickwork on the boards is a penalty, I'm not really sure reason is going to play a decent part in discussing the ref performance.
Ok
pjcas18 : 4/20/2017 5:47 pm : link
well don't take my word for it. Here is an piece about Gallagher from last month.

Quote:
Gallagher Fails the Pest Test

Quote:
There are several common names found on any list of NHL agitators over the past five seasons. The likes of Brad Marchand, Antoine Roussel, Nazem Kadri, Corey Perry, and Radko Gudas come easily to mind. Specific to the Montreal Canadiens, Andrew Shaw seems to proudly wave the instigator banner. One other Habs player consistently appears on these lists as well, Brendan Gallagher. Heres one example of Gallagher being listed as an NHL agitator.

The feisty forward has earned a place in the hearts of Montreal fans and the heads of players around the league as a force to be reckoned with, but does he deserve a spot on any list of the NHLs most notorious pests?

Quote:
....With Brendan Gallagher, theres nothing in his game to eliminate. Hes hard to play against for the right reasons. He never stops working. He never stops skating. He never gives up positioning without a battle whether it be in the front of the net or in the corners. Like the well-known pests of past and present he can make you pay on the scoresheet and is generally a valuable and productive member his team. Unlike the true pests though, he doesnt even remotely cross the line in comparison. Hes never been suspended, and the only thing he was ever under scrutiny for was making comments regarding NHL refereeing, not for on ice antics.

Quote:
Playing Over the Edge

By nature of their role, pests are constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to legal and not so legal actions.

Perry was suspended for four games in 2013 for interference. Antoine Roussel was suspended for two games in 2014 for cross checking and fined that same year for a sucker punch. Radko Gudas has been suspended for a combined nine games over two suspensions. Brad Marchand has had more hearings with the Department of Player Safety than some pests have career games played. Hes been suspended multiple times over his career.

Gallagher hasnt even had an on-ice incident worthy of serious closer inspection. The most popular example used to demonstrate Gallaghers pest-worthy actions is this trip on big Boston defenceman Zdeno Chara from the 2014 post season....

Quote:
....ts a far cry from a check to the head, a slew foot, a spear, or any other annoyingly illegal play a true pest might use. Brendan Gallagher doesnt allow himself to get caught up in those traps. He plays with a control thats more infuriating than having to worry about a dirty shot because theres no known way to get him off his game. He has no apparent breaking point. This is the ultimate quality that puts him in the same category as great historical battlers like Johan Franzen and Ryan Smyth and separates him from the pests and the rats.

He was recently a topic of discussion after sliding into New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist, but he was sliding on his knees uncontrollably at the time and he didnt go looking for it.

into the equation because of a high stick penalty is nothing short of a diversion. He'll never have the reputation around the league that Gallagher or Shaw already cemented years ago by both his contemporary's and writers/reporters/broadcasters.

Keep up the good work though pj, they're the Canadians after all, a fine organEYEzation filled with a long legacy and championship banners. By the way, why would someone who lives in the northeast with plenty of other options choose them? Hell, there would have been more honor in jumping on the Whale wagon years ago. from Zuccarello on Gallagher is the worst thing I saw all period. Granted I watched it fast.

Looked like that was McDonagh's own stick that caught him. If I cared as much as you guys do about this I'd watch it again, but I don't.

The period was decided by a waved off icing, and that would piss me off I was a Rangers fan more than any missed call and it infuriates me as a hockey fan.

I'm fine with the result in this case b/c my fury has boundaries, but I wish refs had to explain their decisions and the period was decided by shoddy defensive play (by the Rangers and the Canadiens).

Wait, how was his goal luck? He drove to the net after his teammate put the puck on net and then finished the rebound. That sounds more like fundamental hockey then luck to me.

I dont consider that luck. You go towards the net, good things happen. Yes, I get that Kreider was prob trying to shoot, all but whiffed to where it deflected to where Zibby got the chance to score. But that is what happens when you put the puck on net. Its not like he threw it on the boards, took a funny bounce and went in while the goalie was asleep.

Whatever. Different strokes i guess

Absolutely, hoya, it seemed like we were watching the team we saw in October/November, center ice just opened up, the breakouts were there as were the forwards on Habs' blue line. Rangers were in a different gear.

In terms of Zib's gwg, I dunno how luck enters the conversation. I don't think Kreids was trying to shoot, he was trying to shovel across to Zib, and yes, there was a slight deflection. If anything, it slowed the cross ice down and I thought that might give Price the time to come across. Hell, if that is luck, then what was the OT game winner off Holden? And #22, jeez, coughs up another giveaway that for a moment looked like it might cost us; he corralled it back.

Thought the Captain was outstanding last night, and even his partner wasn't half bad. Skjei has stepped into the SCP like a five-year vet.

And if AV thought Buch couldn't handle the pace or the punishment, has he rethought that thought?
Best part of this series
MetsAreBack : 4/21/2017 9:00 am : link
is there should now be a market for Girardi this offseason (if the Rangers are inclined to shop him). He's only owed $10 mil over his final 3 years (cap hit unfortunately 5.5m, but plenty of teams out there with no intention to get close to the cap), and will have a LTC (no longer the anchor NMC). We might have to eat some salary, but I don't see why we'd have to eat dead cap space for 6 years at this point. He's holding his own on the top line, and proving he's at least worth a 2nd/3rd pair value (which is ~$3 mil/year).

Duguay and Vali were echoing what smart posters like MAB have been saying for weeks last night after the game - that they cannot stop our 4-line attack, with wave after wave coming at them. Especially later in games, our better conditioning and speed is paying off.

Of course much will be made of swapping Glass for Buchnevich - the truth is we lost a tough game in OT in g2 and won two very close games in g4 and g5... and our top 6 forwards have finally pulled their heads from their asses -- which has a lot more to do with the improved results than putting #15 upstairs... but the playoffs are a game of inches and we're putting ourselves in better position to get game-breaking chances now than we were earlier in the series.

Close it out Saturday. I'm sick of the Bell Centre.

and it's a beautiful thing to see.

I thought besides Nash, Vesey was our best skater last night. He was poised, controlled the puck, and kept pushing play towards Price. Buchnevich has slid in to the lineup and has shown that the game isn't too fast for him (that dangle was pretty). Skeiji has been absolutely phenomenal with Smith. What a coming out year. Fast and Lindberg...what more can you say. Is there any other forward combo you want out there protecting the lead?

Let's take this series at the Garden boys.

Greg from LI : 4/21/2017 9:43 am : link
Girardi had another solid game last night. He's playing a more aggressive hitting game than I've seen from him in years, and playing a smarter positional game too. Not getting caught up-ice on ill-advised pinches. Not turning the puck over as soon as it touches his stick - he leaves that to Staal and Holden.

Great game in Edmonton last night. The lone first round series in the West that has been exciting. Got close to 2OT but Desharnais buried the game winner with a little over a minute remaining.

Lot of talent on that Edmonton team. They are fun to watch. Connor McDavid is so good. He plays with an edge too. Very physical for a kid who just turned 20.

The West really has no one I am particularly afraid of, though. This would be a great year to get back to the Finals. But obviously we are a long, long ways away from there still.

Didn't see the game but San Jose got just one power play in 80 minutes of hockey. I find that hard to believe. Lots of complaining from NYR fans about the refs in our series (I know not you), but again another reminder that refereeing is simply lousy league wide.

good shot of Smith with the right cross to Shaw, couldn't happen to a nicer guy. And wasn't it Shaw who chopped BS's wrist with a slash Tuesday night? Smith turned in a really gutty performance, inspiring. Maybe it was Radulov with the slash, want to see that guy pummeled, shitwhaled to the boards on a charge that is not called.

I missed the 1st period and about half of the 2nd - so I'm not sure if they missed anything in that span. Nothing too egregious that went uncalled from what I saw, but I wasn't 100% focused on the game like I would be for one of ours.

Agree that the officiating is lousy in general. Consistency is always my biggest gripe. If they want to make calls, fine.. if they want to let the players play, fine.. but do it both ways. Don't let one team get away with assaulting the other and then call some BS hook where the stick barely even makes contact.

I'd prefer that they let the players play more often than not in the playoffs - not the place to be calling borderline penalties. I do think stuff that ventures into dirty territory should be called before it gets out of hand. Montreal has done a lot of it but we're not innocent, either. Zuccarello got away with a bad slash in the 1st period last night. Miller got called for his slash on Gallagher which was just a dumb penalty he took out of frustration. Stuff like that should be called. But otherwise, let them go.
Yeah, I was pretty pissed at Miller for that one
Greg from LI : 4/21/2017 11:15 am : link
It didn't end up costing them, but that was just plain stupid. He got pissed off and took a big whack at Gallagher out of frustration. Brain dead penalty.

My take
PaulN : 4/21/2017 11:26 am : link
They fought off the early onslaught and dominated the OT, Zibby and Kreider are starting to play good hockey, McDonaugh was fabulous along with Skjei. Smith has been very good, and Girardi was fine tonight, laid out a couple of big hits. Lindberg and fast are playing great hockey. Hayes and Miller are the players we need to get going now, I think Zibby and Kreider are on now. Wrap it up Saturday Night.

Looking at the stats a bit
bigbluehoya : 4/21/2017 11:40 am : link
4th line still needs to play more. Lindberg and Grabs under 11 min at even strength, Fast right around 13.

Lindberg was on the ice for 14 corsi-for events and zero corsi-against. It's an extreme outlier/aberration, but it's consistent with his really solid play throughout the series.

Agree - it's weird seeing teams like EDM/TOR in playoff games with these young superstars in the making but I am really enjoying it.

It's very strange to look at a Western Conference with CHI/LA both out of the mix before April has even ended. But it's about time. This is good for the league.
Yep

I don't think it'll be long before we see a Toronto/Edmonton final. Those kids are as good as advertised. Also happy to see Nashville finally get through Chicago. That's a really underrated hockey town and a team with a lot of players I like. I think they're the favorites in the west now. They were better than the typical 8 seed

have to be considered the two favorites in the west now (and not just because, mathematically, they already advanced so...) I'm assuming EDM and STL advance in that statement.

Anaheim is a little underrated - aren't they something like 14-0-3 over the last month+ now?

Their defense is so deep. Fowler emerges as their top guy this season but then is hurt for the first round and it's no problem. They just plug and play. Got me thinking, why couldn't we have plucked one of those defensemen from them for Hagelin two seasons ago? Brutal trade, but this is mostly a happy thread so I won't harp on it

Anaheim is the team I think is going to get out of the West - but if they run into a hot Nashville team, they'll certainly have to earn it.

Those would certainly be the two "favorites" in my opinion as well.

:He's a big guy who excels defensively in his own zone. Not a puck-mover, but likes to chip in offensively from time to time and has looked to do so more often this season. Good skater for his size. Biggest question mark is his defense on the rush, particularly against quick forwards, but North American ice should help him there.

He's still just 22 so has plenty of time to iron out any creases. Not a sure thing by any means, but I can see him being a good depth option on the blue line with time."

My guess is because how offensively-minded the Russian system is and how supremely talented Russians forwards are that the Russian defensemen don't look nearly as good.

Kyle in NY : 4/21/2017 11:59 pm : link
I can't decide which team I'd rather play. On reputation, you might say Ottawa is preferable. But Boston is really banged up right now and really only has one scary line, though it is one of the best. Karlsson is the best defenseman in the league for Ottawa, for my money, and has really dominated this series until cramps got to him tonight. Would not be fun playing against him. Goalies about equal.

I don't know. Just beat each other up for 7 games and that's fine.
I'm with you..
arcarsenal : 4/22/2017 12:14 am : link
There's really no team I'd prefer to play between the two. Karlsson is certainly the best player between the two teams and can swing games on his own - but I do feel like we are equipped to handle a player like him.

Boston isn't that scary but they'd have a lot of confidence if they made it through this series.

Pros and cons to both - no such thing as an "easy" draw at this point.

First thing we need to do is take care of business tomorrow and make this conversation relevant. I really do not want to see another game played @ Centre Bell.
