Head Coach Ben McAdoo

May 12, 2017

All right, it was good to get out here and dust them off this morning. We will practice this afternoon; get a chance to get outside on the grass a little bit and a little offense versus defense. Lets open it up.

Q: What do you hope to get out of this weekend?

A: We just want to introduce them to the offense, defense and special teams. Get out here and teach them how we practice, get an evaluation on some guys, some tryout guys who have come in. Those guys are always champing at the bit and give them an opportunity.

Q: What can (Davis Webb) take away from a three-day camp?

A: Yeah, really you have a chance to just teach him install one and introduce him to the system, so to speak, so that he is familiar with how we adjust things. Maneuvering through the playbook, fundamentals are big, talking to him in today’s day and age about how we get away from center, how we receive the ball and just different things fundamentally, but a lot of stuff under center for him.

Q: Were you able to get him the playbook before this?

A: He may have had a chance early on to get his hands on it a little bit. Sometimes you introduce him during the process – like down in Indianapolis, you may take him through some things and see if they can spit it back to you. But really, he has been hands on here with it.

Q: How did Davis Webb do under center?

A: He had some training going into Indianapolis and in the offseason to get ready for the workouts, so you could see that that definitely paid off for him. That helped him, so he is familiar and he has worked at it, but he had a good start.

Q: Three of the draft picks are already signed. How important was it to get that process out of the way?

A: That is something that I am not really concerned about. I just want them out here on the field and focused on their football.

Q: With Engram, are you comfortable using him all the time in 11 personnel?

A: We can’t hold against him what he has been asked to do in a previous offense. We have to develop him as we go along and see what he can handle, see what he is comfortable with and see how we can push him to grow being comfortable and being uncomfortable and where we start and where we finish may be two different things.

Q: Is the blocking going to be the biggest thing to getting (Engram) playing time?

A: No, everything is different. Everything is going to be a challenge. He is coming from more of a spread type offense where he was off the ball a ton. We will have him play off of the ball a little bit. We won’t just have him out there in 11 personnel, we will mix him in. But special teams will be big for him. That will be big early on. He will have a chance to make an immediate impact there as he learns and grows on the offensive side.

Q: You used your tight end in a fullback, H-back type role. Can you see him doing that as well?

A: Yeah, I don’t know what an H-back is. He will play tight end for us and we will use him where he is comfortable and where he can grow.

Q: Does his speed show up already?

A: It was a jog through today. We didn’t have any speed and didn’t have helmets on them yet. We will do that this afternoon, but it was more just jogging, teaching and learning.

Q: How good of a pure pass catcher is he?

A: He has big hands. The biggest challenge for him at this level and especially here is the timing and the rhythm of the quarterback. He has to time his routes up with the quarterback, not necessarily with the quarterback timing up when he is open, so that is going to be different. The ball is going to get on him a lot quicker here than what he is used to even on the downfield stuff, so it is going to be a little bit of a learning curve there. But he does have nice, big, strong hands.

Q: Is that just something you have to factor in when you are taking a guy from a spread offense?

A: It is even going from one team to another in this league. Things are a little bit different in every place you go. It is just magnified going from the college game to the pro game.

Q: I think your tight ends had three combined touchdowns last year. Can (Engram) make an impact in that regard?

A: We will see. We will see how fast he develops, how fast he grows, how fast he learns, and we think that the sky is the limit. We feel that the sky is the limit for him, but we will take it one day at a time.

Q: How much time have you and your coaching staff spent the past two weeks or so after drafting him trying to find ways to use him or utilize him?

A: We have a system of offense in place and we can play any personnel group under the sun with that offense. We try to use the players to their strengths the best we can and we will have something in place for him if he becomes a big factor for us on the offensive side of the ball as a rookie.

Q: Do you think it is safe to say that you will mix up personnel more this season?

A: We will know early on in the season.

Q: Did you feel that you were lacking something last year so that you couldn’t really change up formations?

A: Again, every year is a new year. That was last year and this year will be a new year.

Q: Dalvin Tomlinson has a background in different sports. Do you think that agility helps him as a defensive lineman?

A: I think that he is more athletic than he gets credit for and I think it is an advantage for guys coming out that have played different sports and haven’t just been a one sport guy.

Q: Mark Herzlich said that he has been playing some tight end. What is your thinking on that?

A: Yeah, he has been working on offense for a couple years now. I heard he changed his number, but that doesn’t impact anything.

Q: Are you satisfied with the roster right now?

A: Am I satisfied with the roster? The scheme and the roster are always changing, everyday.

Q: Does the Patriots decision to tender (LeGarette) Blount change anything on your end?

A: That is not a good question for me at this point.

Q: When will you first get to see some of these rookie linemen hit somebody?

A: When we put pads on.

Q: So not for a while?

A: Not for a while. You have to be careful evaluating players running around in their underwear.
LOL..

Not me. Couldn't stand the "this is life and death approach" from TC and can't stand it from BM. It's easy to be an ogre. Lighten up, it's football. Most of us do something more important every day then he does for a living.

The face a coach presents to the media is not always indicative of how he really is. He seems to be quite personable. He let the players wear t-shirts that were poking fun at his hair, and he met the kid who went to the game dressed up as him. Doesn't seem remotely like an ogre to me.

Fair point. Can't stand the public persona then.
