QB Geno Smith

May 25, 2017

Q: How are you feeling?

A: I am feeling pretty good. Every day is getting better and getting stronger. I am feeling good so far.

Q: What aren’t they letting you do?

A: As of right now, I haven’t taken any team reps. I feel like I can do everything, it is just getting the trainers to give me that access. But I fully believe in what they are doing and just taking our time and when I get out there I will be ready.

Q: Other than learning the language, is this offense similar to anything that you have ever run before?

A: It is very similar to the offense that I was in in my first two years with Marty Mornhinweig. Some different terminology, but it is very similar.

Q: What has the vibe around here been like for you and especially compared to what you came from?

A: It has been a great vibe. Everyone is working hard and we are all eager and excited and it has been good, really good so far.

Q: How would you compare it to where you came from?

A: I am not into comparisons. I was thankful for my opportunity with the Jets and I am looking forward to what we have here. We are just building every single day and it is refreshing. It is a good thing to be here and to be learning and getting reps and also getting healthy at the same time.

Q: Were you surprised at the comments that Sheldon Richardson made?

A: Yeah, I don’t want to speak on any comments. I am in a pretty good space here and those things aren’t about me, don’t have anything to do with me, so I will just leave it at that.

Q: Do you anticipate being ready for training camp?

A: Yes, I do. I am working extremely hard every single day getting myself prepared, preparing my body, preparing my mind for training camp and everything after that.

Q: Does Brandon Marshall look any different to you than he did with the Jets?

A: He is slim. He is running fast, he is hungry, he is excited. He has always been hungry, but he is definitely putting the work in and I am excited for him. I am excited to see what he can do in this offense and how it will look once the season comes around.

Q: What do you feel like you have to prove here and to the league?

A: Honestly, I don’t feel like I have to prove anything to anyone other than myself. I am just trying to be my best every single day, focusing on trying to be perfect. I know that is a far goal to try and reach, but just trying to be perfect every day and understanding what is required of me once I step onto the field and then trying to get it done.

Q: I think some people were surprised that you came here to a place where there was an entrenched starting quarterback. Did you have offers from places where you might be able to compete for a starting job?

A: Yeah, but I am going to keep that to myself. I feel like this gave me the best opportunity to grow as a player and I am happy about the decision that I made.

Q: What was it about this chance that allows you to grow?

A: Well, being in a system that I was previously in, one that I thought was really good for me and my skillset. Also being with Coach McAdoo and all of the coaches – I really got a good vibe from the guys and being with a winning organization. All of the things that I put on the top of my list, I felt that here was the place for it.

Q: While they hold you back a bit, how do you overcome not being out there?

A: Mental reps are huge. I am always going through the motions per se. Whenever coach calls the play, we get it in our helmets and I am going through the checks, going through the reads, footwork, things in the back and once I get in there I don’t think my head will be spinning as much because I have been doing that. So I think that is a really good thing.

Q: What about timing with the receivers? How do you make up for that?

A: Well that is something that you just have to work at. The timing is everything, especially in this offense. So we are going to work at it. We are going to get extra reps after and before practice if we can and just trying to perfect everything that we can at this point.

Q: How did you react to them picking a quarterback in the third round?

A: You don’t react. I have been in situations where quarterbacks have been drafted and it happens in this league, so you just have to continue to work. We always say that the cream always rises to the top, right? So guys who aren’t afraid of competition and like to work – they usually perform when their best is needed, so I like to think that I am one of those guys.

Q: What has been your first impression of Davis Webb?

A: I like Davis, man. I think he is hungry, he is eager, has a strong, live arm. He is a really good kid. He is learning a lot and picking up things fast. He has been really good so far.
He is growing on me
Ron Johnson 30 : 5/25/2017 4:03 pm : link
It would to seem him play well in preseason.
Great read...

Well done, Mr. Smith
I always thought (but what do I know)
grizz299 : 5/26/2017 2:58 am : link
that a back up qb should have "legs". The timing can't be there so mobility becomes esp. important.
hes a great backup because of the legs is right

in a league where there is a lot of mobile QBs, practicing against him is a bonus. id be shocked if he didn't beat out Johnson.

I am as excited to watch the backups this preseason as I am the starters. We have two young intriguing QB's in Smith and Webb which will make it very interesting. I will be keeping a close eye on Chad Wheeler, Brett Jones, Adam Bisnowaty, and Jessamen Dunker along the offensive line. On defense it'll be fun to see Avery Moss, Okwara, Jarron Jones, Josh Banks, and Calvin Munson battle for playing time.
