but it's strange to see an entire 27 story building in flames. Is that normal?

What is being reported is that an appliance exploded.
Supposedly started on the 2nd floor

And shot all the way to the 27th floor very quick and at 1 in morning, when you'd figure most were asleep. This could be a pretty bad number of casualties.
Supposedly people were reporting power surges

and nothing was being done about it. Fire alarms were not going off throughout the building. I have a bad feeling that there is going to be many casualties.
this is just awful

Ummmmmm there is no way anyone is still alive...this fire has been going on for hours.
Don't they have sprinkler systems over there?

Those hoses don't look like they are going past the first 10-12 floors.

news.
It was under renovation so

I would assume that is a cause that accelerated the spread as well as fire burns up, not down.

Not knowing the fire code, etc; way too early know what happened.

I was wondering about fire codes as well. This seems to have spread awfully quickly. At this point I'll call it suspicious and see what the investigators come up with.
Said to be 6 dead and 74 hurt

I saw a report
Ron Johnson 30 : 6/14/2017 8:42 am : link
suggesting a new exterior facade created a chimney effect. The reports were horrifying with people screaming "save my children".

It's so inappropriate to talk about fire safety regulations at a time like this. It's exploitative of the tragedy.
Here's an update, but you'll have to click the link.

Fireproof cladding that would have prevented Grenfell Tower tragedy 'would have cost just £5,000 extra' - and the cheap version that WAS used is BANNED in America

Contractors that worked on the £8.6 million Grenfell Tower refurbishment could have spent just £5,000 more on fireproof cladding, it has been revealed.

Hundreds of Reynobond aluminium coated panels - which are banned in the US over fire safety fears - were fitted to the outside of the London high-rise last year.
The building was covered in panels with a plastic core costing £22 per square metre - just £2 cheaper than the fire-resistant version.
