Stupid phone

But as I was saying:

I have nothing but respect and admiration for Girardi. That dude was one of the toughest guys to ever put on a Rangers uniform. He was an iron man for a very long time and a few years back, the Staal-Girardi pairing was arguably the best pairing in the Eastern Conference.

Not bad for an undrafted free agent. He's a true warrior and was a great Ranger.

Thank you, Dan!
Wow I really thought he had some trade value
jv : 6/14/2017 1:13 pm : link
even if the Rangers had to eat a little of that cap hit.

Oh well... Stand up guy and an absolute warrior out there... It's a shame that contract and a coach that misused him caused so much hate to fly at him these past few years.

Sidenote... What does it say about AV that the Rangers are buying out a guy that was part of a top pairing through this season and playoffs? Guy is clueless...
I appreciate DG's contribution
Deej : 6/14/2017 1:13 pm : link
It's a little sad that his contract and usage issues will end up coloring our view of him.

My condolences to Seth.
Had to happen.

It's cool, Seth. For now, we can whip on Staal...for now.

Like I said in the other thread...

Staal might have been even worse last year so I'm still hoping we can unload him somehow.

G was a great Ranger. Sucks he broke down like he did, but when you play the game that way, it's going to be inevitable.

Wish him nothing but the best. Had to do this though. It's time to cut the anchors out of the blue line.

never seemed a fit for Vignaults style. Yeah we overpaid him, but he always gave as much effort as we could ask
Girardi's statement:

Thank you Dan Girardi!

Mind, body and soul. He gave it all to this team, hopefully they take care of him for the rest of his life.

so..
feelflows : 6/14/2017 1:17 pm : link
I don't know any of these answers so:

did he have a No Movement Clause?

does this now open up another player the Rangers can protect?
Interesting that the GM agrees with us
Deej : 6/14/2017 1:17 pm : link
while AV rode DG so hard. Minutes were down this year but I think that was health related. (also, you plausibly had to do this now so that you have the option to cut Staal next summer).

Gorts also took the Glass toy away from AV, and only gave it back when rosters expanded, at which point AV sat in the corner and played with it again.

Im not a fire AV guy, but there are usage issues that are hard to understand, and it appears that the GM agrees.
If Klein also retires,
Anakim : 6/14/2017 1:18 pm : link
We'll have around 15 million or so in cap space. More than enough for Smith, signing Zibanejad to a longterm deal and...yes, your wet dream, Kevin Shattenkirk.

Seems inevitable that he'll wind up here.

2017-2018- 2.7
2018-2019 - 3.7
2019-2020 - 3.7

And then three years of 1.2

Buyout of Girardi solidifies Shattenkirk will be signed this summer.
I go back to the Brad Park era of the late '60s

And very few left it on the ice like Girardi. He aged about as well as he could for his physical style of play. Can't retire #5, of course, but he'd be in my Ring of Honor somewhere in the hallowed halls of MSG.

Was going to be 5.5 * 3 years. Now it is:

2.6, 3.6, 3.6, then 1.1 * 3. So only a 20% savings -- which after paying someone minimum wage for 3 years largely evaporates. But a 40% savings in years 1-3; this is a win-now move.

Is AV going to play him as a #2 guy or will he get the Yandle treatment? That's a big concern for me.

I don't care about years 4-7 or whatever of his deal if they sign him.

I'm also upset they're letting Clendening go. I don't like the way this franchises analyzes/uses dmen.
Rangers now have an open D spot to protect someone

Spitballing... Miller/Hayes + Raanta for Trouba, protect Lindberg. Trade Grabner for someone's ELC player, and tell LV that you'll give them a #3 to avoid Fast and if they refuse that you'll trade him to a team that can protect him.

Worth noting, Stepan has full NTC (for next two seasons) that kicks in on July 1. No NTC until then. Final 2 yrs of deal is modified NTC.

As I expected. I mean they must have real faith that Hayes can be a second-pair guy. They'd be banking on Zibanejad taking over 1C duties. Lindberg, if he returns, can definitely be a 3C.

Despite the stupid talk that Stepan would be exposed, he still has a lot of value. Problem is that he has a NTC kicking in soon.

In a lot of ways this is the end of an era. Longest tenured Ranger skater. Gave this franchise a lot. And he had a nice rejuvenation in the playoffs this season, certainly was better than Staal.

Anak: Why would they resign Smith before the XD, just to protect him? It's fine to do if they arent trading for a D and dont want to protect Holden. But otherwise, it's a waste.

Gort is probably feeling burned by NMCs/NTCs and wants to avoid Stepan's. Like Tupolev removing the safety from his torpedo.

In the end it wasnt the NMC/NTC issue with Staal and DG. It's that they're grossly overpaid, borderline playable guys.

There was a random rumor about that but I haven't seen it confirmed or mentioned anywhere else. I don't think this is the case.

That said, he's very clearly on the block. I'd rather keep him, I think he's still underappreciated. Better be a good return and not just a salary dump if he does go.

There isnt a forward we have who contributes as much as we would get from giving McD a shut down RHD partner to gobble minutes.

Quote:
Girardi, 33, skated in 788 career games with the Rangers, registering 46 goals and 184 assists for 230 points, along with a plus-54 rating and 275 penalty minutes. He ranks ninth on the Rangers' all-time games played list, and he ranks fifth among Blueshirts defensemen in career games played, only trailing Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Ron Greschner, and Jim Neilson. In addition, Girardi, who was signed by the Rangers as an undrafted free agent on July 1, 2006, appeared in more games with the Blueshirts than any other undrafted player in franchise history (among players who were eligible to be selected since the NHL Draft was implemented in 1963).

The Welland, Ontario, native helped the Rangers advance to the playoffs 10 times during his 11 seasons with the franchise (2006-07 - 2008-09; 2010-11 - 2016-17), including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final during the 2013-14 season. In addition, Girardi helped the Rangers finish in first place in their division twice during the regular season (Atlantic Division - 2011-12; Metropolitan Division - 2014-15) and finish with the best record in the NHL during the regular season in 2014-15, as the Blueshirts established single-season franchise records with 53 wins and 113 points. Girardi represented the Rangers at the 2012 NHL All-Star Game and finished sixth in voting for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman in 2011-12. He led the league in blocked shots in 2010-11 and 2012-13, and he established career-highs in blocked shots (236), assists (27), and points (31) during the 2010-11 season. In addition, Girardi served as one of the Rangers' alternate captains since the start of the 2011-12 season.

The 6-1, 212-pounder skated in 788 of 820 regular season games the Rangers played from the time he made his NHL debut on Jan. 27, 2007 through the end of the 2016-17 regular season (96.1%), including 651 of 656 regular season games the team played from Jan. 27, 2007 through the end of the 2014-15 regular season (99.2%). Girardi has skated in at least 80 games in seven seasons in his career, and he has played all 82 games of a season five times. Since the NHL implemented an 82-game schedule in 1995-96, Girardi and Brian Leetch are the only Rangers who have played all 82 games in five different seasons.

Since he made his NHL debut, Girardi leads the NHL in blocked shots (1,691) and ranks fourth among NHL defensemen in games played (788).

Girardi skated in 122 career playoff games with the Rangers, registering six goals and 27 assists for 33 points, along with 36 penalty minutes. He is the franchise's all-time leader in playoff games played (among skaters) and only trails Henrik Lundqvist (128) in career playoff appearances by a Ranger. Girardi also holds the franchise record (among skaters) in consecutive playoff games, as he skated in 109 consecutive playoff games with the Rangers from his NHL playoff debut in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Atlanta in 2007 to Game 1 of the First Round against Pittsburgh in 2016. Girardi's 27 career playoff assists and 33 career playoff points rank fifth among Rangers defensemen in franchise history. Girardi registered three game-winning goals during the 2012 Playoffs, including one in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals vs. Ottawa on April 26, 2012, and his three game-winning goals were tied for the fourth-most a Ranger has recorded in one playoff year in franchise history. Girardi led the NHL in blocked shots (67) and led NHL defensemen in hits (80) during the 2014 Playoffs while helping the Rangers advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

During his tenure with the Rangers, Girardi received several team and league awards and nominations. He was the Rangers' nominee twice for the Bill Masterton Trophy (2011-12 and 2016-17), which is awarded annually to the NHL player who "best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey." Girardi received the John Halligan Good Guy Award in 2012-13 for his cooperation with the media, and he was named the Rangers Fan Club Rookie of the Year in 2006-07.

I haven't heard that and don't put a lot of stock into those things - when Stralman left there was a rumor his wife wanted to leave NYC, too.

I think shaking up a successful top six is really risky even if a comparable-caliber player comes back. The player they receive is likely to be a bit younger, less developed with no guarantee of future growth.

Haha
I'm very disappointed we couldnt find a trade partner here
MetsAreBack : 6/14/2017 2:21 pm : link

After the way he looked in the playoffs and only being owed, what, $10 million over 3 seasons, I would have thought we could have gotten a team to take him on as a 3rd pair defender with leadership skills that helped meet a cap minimum for someone. We probably would have had to chip in, but the cap hit would have spread over 3 years, not 6.

So either G refused to waive his NMC, or we didn't even try. I find the latter hard to believe, and if we had tried, we would have heard rumors from around the league.

My guess is G refused, which is his right, but makes me hedge how much I want to 'thank him' as others have done above. We'll wait to hear in coming days what really transpired here.

As a result of this, we're now looking at 10 forwards we need to try and protect against only 2 defenseman (one of which is Staal). A deal really needs to be made with another team (Nashville... Anaheim, though ANA supposedly already has a deal in place with Vegas... Minnesota... Calgary, which also needs a goalie... etc)
I'm all for trading Stepan.
Keith : 6/14/2017 2:23 pm : link
I think he's peaked as far as his potential and he consistently underperforms in the postseason. He's a very solid player, jack of all trades, but a master of none. At 6.5 AAV, I think we can do better.

What trade or roster move involves zero risk? It's simply not possible. It comes down to whether or not you trust the front office to make a move that brings back a younger, cheaper player with as much or more upside? I do. They did it with Brassard and he's not as good or as valuable as Stepan.
Stepan

what if trading him lets you sign both Shatty and Smith, and resign all our Miller, Mika, Hayes types to term, plus returns another core piece (something better than the Brassard return)?

Im not saying trade him, but I dont think it's an easy question, especially with his trade protection kicking in.
And I have to believe a trade of 1-2 forwards

This isn't the first time this has happened. Marty St Louis couldn't get a job the offseason after AV kept putting him out there on top lines and the PP1 in the ECF against Tampa. Boyle couldn't get work after playing a prominent role here.

Its frightening how the GM and the HC are on completely different wavelengths. Personally I think the GM gets it and the HC is behind the times... but regardless you need the ship sailing in the same direction to succeed.

Generally, yeah, AV has some maddening usage issues. I mean, Tanner Glass.

The flipside is that I think he's done a good job developing players, and we've been winning. The biggest problem of late has been the Ds. AV didnt resign Staal and DG to big contracts.

AV had his hands in both those contracts. They were both handed out when he was head coach. If he valued Stralman over Staal, you think we sign Staal and let the other walk?

I still think we need to shake this lockerroom up. I'm fine not going crazy, but i'm not afraid to shake up that top 6 or otherwise trade some leadership because i dont think you can choke as much as we did this past offseason and not do anything as a management team about that.

- w/o qualifiers, fans should tip their hats to DG, who was a warrior; can't blame him for being the beneficiary of Sather's gaffe. Well rested into the SCP, he played well, if not well enough for that $$

- I agree with arc's characterization of Satheresque to expect Shattenkirk here, but maybe Gort's eye will be more discerning, looking at Nash or Anaheim backline

- didn't tender #4 but signed Kampfer??? Must be something we're missing, because this puts AV and Gort on same page. wtf?

- again, kudos to the NYR thread for the collective intelligence and decorum.

- Stepan, indeed, a tough one. But he was too often invisible--and he had plenty of company in the persons of Miller, Hayes, Kreider, et al.--in the playoffs. Think MAB is right when he says:

It's not as if Rangers were a team full of rookies and first year players who predictably wilted under the pressure. They were a team of Playoff-"tested" young vets who did not come through. In fact, it was some rookies and 1st year vets like Sjkei, Lindberg and Fast who shined, relatively, and McD, Nash, and Smith were solid.

Does anyone here think we get out of the Conference Finals had we prevailed against Ottawa? Doesn't seem to me that could have happened, so if your sights are set higher, you can't stand pat.

And no mention on that score of Henrik. I'm not convinced this year did not mark the onset of a career in decline. That's not a trade him statement because he's likely untradeable, but if the team is going to deal Raanta as part of a package for a d-man, they better get a damn good player, or really like the prospect, if they think he's ready.

From the world Jr.'s tourney. He was a beast among boys there, and it seems like the guys who shine in that tournament end up being pretty good NHL'ers.

of course, I haven't seen much of him beyond that so some scouting opinions may very, but he strikes me as a Lucic/Simmonds type, but bigger and faster.

Looked like a big man who actually played big (pjcas alert). Off the top of my head I think he was a 2nd round pick. So maybe the natural talent is good, not great. So perhaps the second piece in a Stepan deal.

Stepan for Greenway + Dumba, I'm not keen to move Stepan but that's a deal I'd do. Would clear cap and provide young talent. Shades of a Brassard deal

Or, Sweden just keeps a whole line from a SEL team in tact, where two of the players are Forsberg and Naslund each 2 years post-draft, and then the Rangers get fooled into thinking that their linemate Sundstrom is hot shit too, so they draft him 8th overall. And then we trade him for Pavel Brendl.

It's funny, I've been bitter about that for a while, but really he was a fine pick. He scored more than I remember. And the #1 we gave for Brendl turned out to be #8 overall, and there wasnt an all star drafted until Justin Williams at 28 (and really, the only star player taken after #3 was Hank in the 7th round -- crazy bad draft).
Inevitable move
Vanzetti : 6/14/2017 6:55 pm : link
As will be buying out Staal and Henrik down the line.

Rangers have good goalie prospects but not much in the way of blue line prospects.

As posters have suggested, the obvious move is to trade Step for a young dman. But to be honest, that won't be enough. I think they have to play the long hand and avoid a win-now move like Shattenkirk. T

How many years of stink did it take to pull the plug on Girardi? I'd argue that he has been very bad since the 2013-14 playoffs (the SCF year). I dont have his playoff stats, but before that he was consistently a 48-49 CF% player in the regular season. After that he was 46.3, 41.3, and 44 lat year. In his defense, the more he struggled, the LESS sheltered his minute got. Because AV.

If Hank gets similar rope, then he just has to get thru next season without turning into a pumpkin. I doubt he falls apart (I actually expect a bounce back). I could see the last 1-2 seasons of Hank being below average. But I dont think he gets bought out over that. Im actually not sure Dolan would authorize it even if the hockey people requested it.

Doubt Henrik lasts more than two more years. Shesterkin is waiting in the wings. The question is whether his contract is movable and whether he would waive the NMC

I expect Shesterkin to play 2 more years in Russia. Then either 2 seasons in NYR or one in AHL, and one in NHL -- if Hank is struggling AND IS pans out. He's not just having this job handed to him. In any event, I could see Hank's last year and a half being a time-share or even or someone else taking over. That doesnt mean we're going to buy him out.

That's what I see, I just thin 2 more years. No right or wrong there. I just dont see him getting off the boat and being handed 60 starts pre-season (ie when you have to do a buyout). So when is this buyout, barring a complete collapse by Hank?

- June 2018: IS has no N.A. experience? Nope

- June 2019: IS has 0-1 years N.A. experience. How many playoff starts? How many RS starts? Hard to see us eating 4.25, 5.75, 1.75, 1.75 for no Hank. Basically, it saves you 2.5 million per season. Are we so enamored by the hypothetical rookie success of IS that we arent willing to effectively pay Hank 2.5mm per for 2 seasons?

- June 2020: Shesty has at most 2 seasons of experience. Cutting Hank would create cap hits of 5.5 and 1.5 million. I.e. cutting him saves 1.5 million against the cap, net of 500-750k after you factor in his roster replacement, but spreads some of the hit to 2021-22.

Im sorry, I just dont buy the confident statement(s) that Hank will be bought out. It seems really unlikely to me. It wont save money. And if we're moving on from Hank for IS, either IS is a shot from a cannon superstar or we're in a bit of a rebuild, in which case we wont want to push cap obligations out further.

IMO, if Hank falls apart and we need to move on, then we should liquidate a bunch of guys and rebuild around Miller, Buch, Skjei and picks.
......
BrettNYG10 : 6/15/2017 11:27 am : link
I think the buyout discussion revolves around whether you think he's in decline or not. He probably isn't what he was five years ago (due to aging, deterioration of athleticism), but I think he still has it in him to be a top goalie and be in Vezina contention with a good D in front of him. I think he could have 2-3 more high-caliber years and start to decline. The 15th highest paid goalie got paid $5.3M last year - assume some inflation and Lundqvist's $8.5M if he's an average goalie in 2019 isn't that bad to handle for a year or two. Especially if the Russian guy is taking over the reigns at that point on a cheap deal.

If he's even just average for the next two, I don't see it happening.
Yeah it is crazy how
Sandgluff : 6/15/2017 11:55 am : link
quickly people want to start talking buyout. Hank was still really good in the playoffs and if IS makes it, it would be good for him to develop under a guy like Hank, plus he wont be getting paid a ton so presumably our goalie situation in terms of cap would be comparable to most other teams.
Fundamentally NHL buyout rules
Deej : 6/15/2017 12:06 pm : link
dont get you out of rich contracts. It's very little savings. It is mostly helpful for situations like Girardi, where a guy on a big contract shouldnt be on the roster anymore. Ie marginal NHLer or worse. For a guy like Hank, who will likely be backup-quality or better at the end of his contract, there is very little savings once you factor in obtaining a competent replacement backup.

It's also helpful for compliance with the 50 contract rule, but that's not an issue NYR will have due to all the picks they traded.
Barring injury, I can't see Hank not being the starter in two years
Greg from LI : 6/15/2017 12:16 pm : link
At that point, maybe Shestyorkin comes in and sets the world on fire and they start easing Henrik out of the #1 slot, but I can't see it happening before then.

And when the defense is much improved next season, I wouldn't be surprised to see a magical comeback type of season for him even if his skills are still starting to fade.

Well the logic is sound. If Raanta is the most valuable piece, they'll take him. I think you could get a 2nd or better for Lindberg too. But LV is going to have those deals in place before the draft. I.e. if they take Raanta, they will have a handshake deal on trading him away for picks.

They should get at least a 2 and a 3 for Raanta in this bad draft.

I was listening to TSN for a little while the other day and they talked about Stepan as if he was a player needing to be managed. He's a legitimate 1C who has handled tough minutes.

The return for someone like him has to be someone like Trouba. And maybe Dumba is a comparable player, I don't know.

I trust Gorton overall, but am a bit worried about how the team judges D.

Trouba and Dumba are not similar
Deej : 6/16/2017 11:21 am : link
Trouba is a very good defender. I would say he has offensive upside, but with 33 points in 60 games this year, the offense is here already.

Dumba is an electric skating, high offense skill smaller D man with all the expected defensive lapses players in that mold come with. I.e. not out of control bad defense, but it's an issue.

Trouba is a very good all situation top pair RHD. Dumba you probably want to shelter some.
Thanks.
BrettNYG10 : 6/16/2017 11:28 am : link
I'm not willing to trade Stepan (straight-up, at least) unless it's for a bona fide top pair dman.
I think that's right
Deej : 6/16/2017 11:31 am : link
a star center should return a star d. A bonafide 1C should return a #2 dman (ie a top pair not star). I think we'd add for Trouba, but we'd need more than Dumba. Esp. b/c of the race thing.
Opinions on Dumba from Wild fans
Kyle in NY : 6/16/2017 11:47 am : link
were pretty mixed, after doing some research. Mostly centered around being unreliable defensively, though his offense seems to be developing well.

Trouba you take one for one in a heart beat, and might be even willing to put in more. Dumba, I'm intrigued by the upside and ability as a RHD. But if Stepan is going the other way, Minnesota needs to add more

I see no reason that every d man needs to make $$. If you have a good top 2 pairs, you can get by with a cheap #6.

Is Day turning pro? I know he is just a year post draft, but I thought I remembered him turning pro. I really think he might benefit from playing around McD and Skjei and seeing what medium sized, elite skating strong Ds do all game. I think Skjei probably greatly benefited from seeing such a similar guy in McD.

Would you rather trade Stepan+Raanta for Trouba or just sign Shattenkirk? Or neither move?

Assume Smith re-signs in both scenarios.

Tough call, probably the Trouba deal. But I'm ok bringing back mostly the same forward group with an improved D. So I'm good with either.

Trouba deal, and it's not close for me. Younger, better player, still RFA after the upcoming season, and that trade cuts almost $4.5m from the cap this season. If you do that trade you still have damn near $20m cap room, figure you resign Smith and you have $15m cap room.

So basically you'd be in the same spot cap wise (in immediate terms), and you've basically done everything you need to do to turn your biggest weakness into a strength. And you've gotten younger.

Admittedly, You have a problem at C in this case which you'll need to be creative to fix.

@TheFourthPeriod who's a dark horse player that you could see being moved that not a lot of people might expect?

I'd move Step & Raanta in a heartbeat for Trouba! Step reached his celing 2 seasons ago, he doesn't have the legs to keep up with the speed of today's game and he's moving into the dark years of his contract with the NMC coming. Sure, he's got a "high hockey IQ" but we all know that's just a euphimism for a player that isn't highly skilled or doesn't do amything at an elite level, and let's face it, he was invisible in the playoffs in fact he admitted it.
